Hybrid NYC Event: “Reflections on Postwar Legacies: Japan, Germany, and the Future of International Law”

Join the American Council on Germany and the Friends of Freiburg Alumni North America for a hybrid event with Prof. Dr. Masahisa Deguchi (Faculty of Law, Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto, Japan) and alumnus of the University of Freiburg, who founded The Institute for Justice Systems in Comparative Law (IJSCL) at the Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto.

Please note that lunch will be served in-person from 12-12:30 p.m., and the hybrid discussion will begin promptly at 12:30 p.m.

Prof. Dr. Masahisa Deguchi  is a Japanese legal scholar specializing in procedural law and comparative legal studies. He is currently based in Kyoto, Japan, where he serves as Special Professor at the Faculty of Law at Ritsumeikan University.

Prof. Dr. Deguchi earned his Bachelor of Laws from Chuo University in 1983 and pursued further studies at the University of Freiburg in Germany the same year. He later completed a Master of Laws at Keio University in 1988 and received his Doctor of Laws from the University of Freiburg in 1991, supported by a DAAD scholarship.

Prof. Dr. Deguchi’s  academic career began at the University of Freiburg, where he worked as an assistant at the Faculty of Law from 1989 to 1991. He subsequently joined Ritsumeikan University, becoming Associate Professor in 1991 and later Professor at the Ritsumeikan Law School in 2006. Over the years, he has held numerous leadership roles, including Vice Dean of the Faculty of Law, Director of the Center for Global Education and Research, and Vice Dean of the Graduate School of Law. He also served as Vice President of the International Association of Procedural Law and held visiting appointments at Harvard Law School and the University of Washington.

Prof. Dr. Deguchi has received several prestigious honors, including the JaDe Prize, a Federal Cross of Merit of Germany, and multiple Humboldt Foundation fellowships. He has also served in advisory and legal committees in Japan and remains actively engaged in international academic exchange.
