Matthias Machnig has served as State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy since October 2014. Prior to this, he was Minister for Economics, Labor, and Technology in the Free State of Thuringia (2009-2013), State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building, and Nuclear Safety (2005-2009), and State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Building, and Housing (1998-1999). Mr. Machnig was involved in the Social Democratic Party (SPD) as a campaign manager for the 2014 European elections, as Chief of Staff to the General Secretary of the SPD and coordinator of the campaign headquarters from 1995 to 1998, and as Deputy Head of Division at the SPD Parliamentary Group from 1991 to 1992. Mr. Machnig studied Sociology in Münster.
