Armin Laschet has been the Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia since June 2017. Prior to this, he was the Chairman of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in the North Rhine-Westphalian State Parliament. Since 2012, he has also served as one of five Deputy Chairmen of the CDU. Under the leadership of Jürgen Rüttgers, former Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia, Minister-President Laschet served as the State Minister for Generations, the Family, Women, and Integration from 2005 until 2010, and as State Minister for Federal Affairs, Europe, and Media as of 2010. He was a member of the European Parliament from 1999 to 2005 and a member of the German Bundestag from 1994 to 1998. Minister-President Laschet studied law and politics at the University of Munich and the University of Bonn, and then started his career as a journalist.
