Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of an ACG fellowship?
The ACG’s fellowship programs allow young professionals to conduct in-depth research while meeting with their transatlantic counterparts. The programs are designed to broaden fellows’ professional experiences and world-views and to enable them to establish working relationships overseas. Most fellows use this opportunity as a steppingstone to advance their careers.

What are the responsibilities of a fellow?
Before traveling,  all fellows are expected to produce a detailed itinerary outlining who they will meet and when. The ACG encourages fellows to have at least two to three appointments per day. Hunt fellows may submit weekly itineraries if they plan to conduct archival research.

While abroad, the fellows must explore the subjects proposed in their application unless the ACG has approved a new topic. Upon returning from overseas, fellows must submit a 4,000-word analytical report based on the research results they conducted. Fellows must also present their findings as a webinar or in-person event for the ACG. If fellows produce any additional materials – including but not limited to news articles, blogs, podcasts, etc. – they should be shared with the ACG.

What do fellows receive?
The McCloy, Hunt, and Kellen Fellowships provide a $7,000 stipend to cover the cost of transatlantic airfare and room and board for a minimum of 21 days. Duisberg Fellows receive $7,000 for two months, plus transatlantic airfare.

The initial stipend payment will have $1,000 withheld pending submission of a final report.

What are the qualifications to apply?
Fellows must be either a U.S. citizen living in the United States or a German citizen living in Germany. Fellows must have completed a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) and must be in the relatively early stages of their career. The Hunt and Goldman fellowships require that you are in the final stages of pursuing or recently completed a Ph.D.

Kellen and Duisberg fellows must be German citizens living in Germany.

What documents do I need to apply for the fellowship?
To apply for a fellowship, candidates must submit an application form, a cover letter, a three- to five-page project proposal, a current resume/CV, and two letters of recommendation. Additional information may be needed depending on the fellowship.

How should I submit my application?
Applications should be submitted here.

Applications sent via email should be received no later than 11:59 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on the day of the deadline. It is not necessary to mail any portion of your application.

Do my letters of recommendation need to be sent with my application?
Letters of recommendation may be sent separately. The same deadline applies for letters of recommendation.

Am I expected to contact possible meeting partners and plan a full itinerary before I apply?
You should have a basic idea of your meeting partners and include this information in your application. Contacting meeting partners before being awarded a fellowship is neither required nor suggested.

How long after I apply will I know if my fellowship has been selected?
The selection process varies depending on the fellowship. On average, it takes two months for a decision to be made.

As an American, am I allowed to travel to other parts of Europe?
With prior approval from the ACG, Americans may travel to other parts of Europe if necessary for their research. However, Germany must be the primary research focus.

If the ACG awarded me a fellowship in the past, can I apply for a second fellowship?
No, fellowship alumni are not eligible for a second fellowship.
