In this role\, he is serving German MNCs with operations in the United States and collaborates with PwC teams from all PwC Lines of Services in the U.S. and Germany. His clients include companies from various industries such as automotive\, chemicals and retail & consumer products. In his previous role\, Mr. Heck was the Head of the China Business Group at PwC Germany and Chairman of the European China Business Group at PwC from August 2016 until April 2024. He advised Chinese companies on their investments in Europe as well as European companies with their investment in China and Asia. During a secondment to China from 2012 – 2016\, Mr. Heck led the German Business Group of PwC Hong-Kong and Mainland China. During a secondment to New York 2005-2007\, he served US MNCs as an audit manager. \nMr. Heck graduated from Hochschule Pforzheim in 1998. From 2000 to 2005\, he was a guest lecturer at Pforzheim Business School. From 2012 to 2016\, he was a guest lecturer at Tongji University in Shanghai. Mr. Heck is a frequent speaker at conferences and guest on podcasts. \nFrauke Steiner is a Partner in the Assurance practice at EY Germany and has been assigned to EY US since summer 2024. She leads the firm’s German Business Network in the U.S.\, where she supports German\, Austrian\, and Swiss businesses. She has significant industry experience in the automotive sector and industrial production. \nMs. Steiner joined EY in 2006 and worked in Nuremberg. Before her secondment to New York\, she spent eight years in China as one of three GBN representative for China auditing\, coordinating engagements\, and advising German-speaking clients doing businesses in Greater China. Ms. Steiner has several years’ experience auditing listed DAX40 enterprises including the assessment of internal control environment (SOX) as well as providing audit and advisory services to mid-size and larger companies in Germany and subsidiaries overseas. \nMs. Steiner studied Business Administration at the University of Nuremberg and holds a dual degree Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) from Tsinghua University and INSEAD European Business School.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Join the American Council on Germany for a breakfast briefing with Heather Conley President of the German Marshall Fund (2007 Young Leader) \n  \nHeather Conley is the sixth president of the German Marshall Fund. She arrives at GMF after 12 years at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS)\, where she most recently served as senior vice president for Europe\, Eurasia\, and the Arctic and as director of the Europe\, Russia\, and Eurasia Program. She previously served four years as executive director of the Office of the Chairman of the Board at the American National Red Cross\, where she supported the first comprehensive reform of the governance structure of the American Red Cross Board since 1947\, incorporating modern best-governance practices. She worked closely with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on the International Movement’s policies and programs in the Middle East and elsewhere. From 2001 to 2005\, Ms. Conley was deputy assistant secretary of state in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs with responsibilities for U.S. bilateral relations with the countries of Northern and Central Europe. She co-led the U.S. interagency effort to enlarge NATO and secure Senate ratification of an Amended NATO Treaty\, and she created a senior level U.S. dialogue with the eight Nordic and Baltic states\, the Enhanced Partnership in Europe (e-PINE). \nMs. Conley began her career in the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs at the U.S. Department of State. She was selected to serve as special assistant to the coordinator of U.S. assistance to the newly independent states of the former Soviet Union\, and she has received two State Department Meritorious Honor Awards. Ms. Conley frequently appears as a foreign policy analyst and Europe expert on CNN\, MSNBC\, BBC\, NPR\, and PBS\, among other prominent media outlets. She received her B.A. in international studies from West Virginia Wesleyan College and her M.A. in international relations from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The event will take place from 8:00am-9:30am (CDT) at The Chicago Club.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator color=”black” border_width=”2″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Metin Hakverdi joined the SPD in 2002 and has been a member of the German Bundestag since 2013. His reelection in Hamburg-Harburg in 2021 was resounding — with nearly 40 percent of the vote. He serves on the Bundestag’s Committee on European Union Affairs and on the Finance Committee. He is the Chairman of the USA/North America Working Group within the SPD Parliamentary Group and a member of the German-American Parliamentary Friendship Group in the German Bundestag. \nBefore being elected to the Bundestag\, Mr. Hakverdi was a member of the Parliament of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg from 2008 to 2013\, where he was on the Budget Committee and the Committee of Public Companies and Assets. He attended high school in Simi Valley\, California\, in 1985/86 and studied law at the Christian-Albrecht University in Kiel and at Indiana University’s Maurer School of Law. He became licensed to practice law in 2000. \n  \nThomas Silberhorn has been a member of the German Bundestag since 2002. Since 2021 he has served as the Spokesman of the CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group for Transatlantic Relations. Mr. Silberhorn was the Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development from 2014 to 2018. From 2009 to 2013\, he was the Chairman of the CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group on the Legal Affairs Committee. He chaired the CSU regional group’s working group on foreign affairs\, defense\, Europe\, economic cooperation and development\, human rights and humanitarian aid from 2005 to 2013. He joined the CSU in 1987 and was on the Board of the CSU’s Junge Union from 1998 to 2002. Mr. Silberhorn is a lawyer. After his second state examination in 1994\, he worked as a research assistant at the University of Bayreuth. After working as a Postdoctoral Scientist at the IBM Almaden Research Center working on data integration topics\, he became assistant professor for information integration at Humboldt-University. Since 2006 he holds the Chair for Information Systems at the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) at the University of Potsdam in Germany. He has been visiting researcher at QCRI\, AT&T Research\, IBM Research\, and SAP. His research interests include data profiling\, data quality and cleansing\, and data integration\, recorded in over 250 scientific publications. Next to numerous program committee memberships for international conferences\, he has organized several conferences in various roles and he is the Editor-in-Chief of ACM’s Journal of Data and Information Quality (JDIQ).[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

In this capacity\, she has led the Green Party to a surge in the polls She has been instrumental in developing strategies to reach out to new voters and strengthen progressive politics in the age of authoritarian challenges. \nMs. Baerbock is a member of the Committee on Family\, Senior Citizens\, Women\, and Youth\, as well as a deputy member of the Economic and European Committee. From 2013 to 2017\, she served as spokeswoman on climate policy and was a member of the Committee on Economic Affairs and Energy\, the European Affairs Committee\, and the German-Polish Parliamentary Group. After the 2017 election\, Ms. Baerbock was part of the coalition negotiation team for her party. Prior to joining the Bundestag\, she was Chairman of Alliance 90/The Greens Brandenburg from 2009 to 2013. She was also a Board member of the European Green Party (2009-2012) and a member of the party council of Alliance 90/The Greens (2012-2015). She graduated in 2005 with an LLM degree in International Law from the London School of Economics. She previously worked as a journalist for the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung. \n\npolitical salon: promoting dialogue across generations. Devlin is Director of Global Policy & International Public Affairs at Pfizer Inc. Mr. Frankenberger’s focuses on U.S.\, European\, transatlantic\, and international politics. Prior to joining the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung\, he was a congressional fellow and served as an assistant to a Member of Congress in 1985 and 1986\, thus taking a closer look at the political decision-making process of the United States. Mr. Frankenberger’s academic activities include research positions at the Center for North American Studies in Frankfurt/Main and a Marshall Fellowship at Harvard University in 1990. From 2003 until April 2008 he was an Assistant Professor of Political Science and North American Studies at Bonn University. He studied International Relations\, American Language and Literature\, and German Literature at Bonn University and Georgetown University in Washington\, D.C. He holds an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Political Science from Bonn University and was a fellow at the Johns Hopkins University’s American Institute of Contemporary German Studies in Washington\, D.C. He is also an associate at the Stiftung Neue Verantwortung\, Berlin\, and a lecturer in Security Policy at the Zeppelin University in Friedrichshafen. Twice\, Capital magazine Germany named him one of the “Most promising leaders under 40.” His essays on transatlantic security policy. international relations\, and American politics have been published in numerous newspapers and magazines\, including The Wall Street Journal\, Neue Zürcher Zeitung\, Survival\, Internationale Politik\, die tageszeitung\, Merkur\, The Weekly Standard\, and American Foreign Policy Interests\, and the NATO Defense College in Rome has published three of his studies as research papers. Prior to this\, he was the Head of the Policy and Counseling Department at the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung from 2013 to 2016. During this time\, his main focus was on political planning and strategy\, analysis\, and counseling political parties\, as well as addressing populism. From 2006 to 2012\, Mr. Lange headed the Ukraine office of the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung and also taught Political Science and International Relations at the University of Greifswald\, the Department of International Relations at the State University of St. Petersburg\, and the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. Before joining the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung\, Mr. Lange worked for the CDU/CSU faction in the German Bundestag\, and from 2003 to 2006\, he was with the Robert Bosch Foundation in St. Petersburg\, Russia. Mr. Lange studied Political Science\, Communications\, and Computer Science after completing his military service in the Bundeswehr\, where he had assignments in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo. \n  \nJeffrey Rathke is a Senior Fellow and Deputy Director of the Europe Program at CSIS. Previously\, he served as Director of the State Department Press Office\, from May 2014 to June 2015 (and acting Deputy Spokesperson in April and May). He joined the Foreign Service in 1991 and retired in June 2015. Mr. Rathke served in Kuala Lumpur as Counselor for Political Affairs from 2011 to 2014. Prior to that\, he was Deputy Director of the Private Office of the NATO Secretary General in Brussels. He also served in Berlin as Minister-Counselor for Political Affairs from 2006 to 2009. His Washington assignments have included Deputy Director of the Office of European Security and Political Affairs (EUR/RPM) and Duty Officer in the White House Situation Room and State Department Operations Center. Mr. Rathke was a Weinberg Fellow at Princeton University from 2003 to 2004\, winning the Master’s in Public Policy Prize. He served at the U.S. Embassy in Dublin from 2001 to 2003\, covering multilateral politics during Ireland’s tenure on the UN Security Council. From 1999 to 2001\, he was posted in Moscow and was responsible for relations with the Russian legislative branch in the Political Section. He was assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Berlin from 1994 to 1996 and helped open the U.S. Embassy in Riga from 1992 to 1994. He holds an M.P.P. degree from Princeton University and B.A. and B.S. degrees from Cornell University.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

RSVP (acceptances only) to the American Council on Germany at 212-826-3636 or events@acgusa.org. \n  \nDavid Gill assumed his post as Consul General of Germany in New York in August 2017. Born in Schönebeck\, East Germany\, Mr. Gill worked for three years as a plumber before attending the Theological Seminary of the Protestant Church in Berlin-Brandenburg. After the fall of the Berlin Wall\, he was among those maintaining the extensive files of the GDR’s Ministry of State Security\, the Stasi. In 1990\, he was Chairman of the Normannenstrasse Citizens’ Committee at the headquarters of the Ministry of State Security\, then Head of Administration of the Parliamentary Special Committee for the dissolution of the GDR Ministry of State Security/Office of National Security. From 1990 to 1992\, he was Spokesman and Head of Division of the Federal Commissioner for the Files of the State Security Service of the former GDR under Joachim Gauck. Mr. Gill studied Law at Freie Universität Berlin from 1992 to 1996 and went on to receive his Master of Laws from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia in 1998. He then interned at the United States Congress in Washington\, DC. From 2000 to 2001\, Mr. Gill worked as a Desk Officer at the Federal Ministry of the Interior\, then as a Desk Officer at the Office of the Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information in Berlin from 2001 to 2003. From 2004 to 2012\, he served as the Deputy Representative of the Council of the Protestant Church in Germany (EKD) to the Federal Republic of Germany and the EU. Before his assignment as Consul General in New York\, Mr. Gill was State Secretary and Head of the Office of the Federal President from 2012 to 2017. He was a delegate to the American-German Young Leaders Conference in Nashville in 1992.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The American Council on Germany will host a discussion and luncheon with Bruce Stokes\, the Director of Global Economic Attitudes at Pew Research Center. \nRSVP (acceptances only) to the American Council on Germany at 212-826-3636 or events@acgusa.org. \nBruce Stokes is Director of Global Economic Attitudes at Pew Research Center\, where he assesses public views about economic conditions\, foreign policy\, and values. He is also a non-resident fellow at the German Marshall Fund and an Associate Fellow at Chatham House. He is the former International Economics Correspondent for the National Journal\, a former Senior Transatlantic Fellow at the German Marshall Fund\, and a former Senior Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations\, where he is a member. Mr. Stokes is author of the recent Pew Research Center studies “Europeans Face the World Divided\,” “Euroskepticism Beyond Brexit\,” “Germany and the United States: Reliable Allies\,” and “Americans\, Japanese: Mutual Respect 70 Years After the End of WWII.” Mr. Stokes is a graduate of Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The ACG and Cultural Vistas will host a Political Salon with Souad Mekhennet\, Washington Post Correspondent and Author of I Was Told to Come Alone: My Journey Behind the Lines of Jihad. \nWednesday\, June 14\, 2017\n6:00 p.m. Happy Hour\n6:30 – 8:00 p.m. Discussion \nYou must register through Eventbrite in order to attend. \nSouad Mekhennet\, a reporter who has been covering the Middle East\, North Africa\, and radical Islamic movements since shortly after September 11\, is a correspondent for The Washington Post’s national security desk. She has also reported on terrorism for The New York Times\, The International Herald Tribune\, and NPR\, and she is the co-author of The Eternal Nazi\, Children of Jihad\, and Islam. She was one of two reporters who broke the story of Khaled el Masri’s rendition case and worked on a series called “Inside the Jihad\,” where she and her colleagues interviewed members of radical jihadist organizations all over the world. Ms. Mekhennet was a 2012 Nieman Fellow at Harvard University\, and she has been a visiting fellow at the Weatherhead Center for International Policy at Harvard\, the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS)\, and the Geneva Center for Security Policy. The daughter of a Turkish mother\, and a Moroccan father\, she was born and educated in Germany. She is an alumna of the ACG’s Young Leaders Study Group on the Future of Europe: Demographic Trends\, Migration\, and Social Cohesion.  \npolitical salon: promoting dialogue across generations. This series brings together a diverse group of younger and mid-career professionals for informal\, open discussions on a range of current political\, economic\, and social topics in an increasingly interconnected global environment – with an emphasis on issues of concern for the transatlantic agenda.
