SUMMARY:Hot Topics Call: Developments in Thuringia
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]This week the German political landscape has been roiled by dramatic developments in the small eastern state of Thuringia. \nAlthough Bodo Ramelow\, Thuringia’s Minister President\, had enough votes to continue as the head of a minority coalition made up of the Left Party\, the Social Democrats\, and the Greens\, after three months of gridlock he was ousted from the position by FDP politician Thomas Kemmerich. In a vote on Wednesday\, Kemmerich beat Ramelow by one vote\, with support of the Christian Democrats – and the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD). The CDU – and its Bavarian sister party the CSU – have ruled out all forms of cooperation with the AfD and party leaders have demanded new elections. Within the FDP\, many are reeling from Kemmerich’s decision to accept support from the AfD. These events triggered a national outcry. In the meantime\, Kemmerich has stepped down\, paving the way for new state elections. But\, German party politics are in chaos. \nJoin us for a Hot Topics Call on February 10 at 10:00 am (EST) with Dr. Christian Martin\, Max Weber Visiting Chair in German and European Studies at NYU\, who will reflect on what these developments mean for Thuringia – and for German politics writ large. \nDr. Martin is a professor of political science at the University of Kiel\, Germany. He currently holds the Max Weber Chair in German and European Studies at New York University. He has studied political science at the University of Konstanz and holds a doctorate from there (2002). Martin was a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Konstanz and at the Max-Planck-Institute in Jena (2003-2004). He was an assistant professor at the University of Hamburg (2004-2008) and a Visiting Assistant Professor at Northwestern University (2008-2011). \nTo register for this call\, please click here[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The ACG and the Freunde des ACG will host a discussion and reception with Peter Kropsch\, CEO of Deutsche Presse-Agentur (DPA)\, in conversation with Dr. Steven E. Sokol. \nDr. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Munich: Partner\, Competitor\, or Rival? The China Conundrum in Transatlantic Relations
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The ACG and the American Institute for Contemporary Germany Studies will host an official side event at the 2020 Munich Security Conference.  \nChina’s growing international presence has far-ranging effects on both the United States and Germany in areas such as economics and trade\, technology policy\, human rights\, the regional power balance\, and international security. German and American wariness about these issues is growing and common concerns could serve as a foundation for greater transatlantic cooperation vis-à-vis China\, but policies on these issues often have diverged. At a time when the United States considers further trade measures against Europe following the first phase of an agreement between Washington and Beijing\, our discussion will seek to identify shared American and German interests and assess the appropriate level of ambition and priorities for a transatlantic approach to Chinese influence. \nSpeakers include: \nRobert Blair\, Special Representative for Telecommunications Policy in the White House \nCongresswoman Susan Brooks (R-IN) \nReinhard Bütikofer\, Deputy Member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs\, European Parliament\, Brussels \nElizabeth Economy\, C.V. Starr Senior Fellow and Director for Asia Studies\, Council on Foreign Relations\, New York \nSenator Christopher Murphy (D-CT) \nSenator Rob Portman (R-OH) \nDr. Norbert Röttgen\, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs\, CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group\, German Bundestag\, Berlin \nSenator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) \nSenator Roger Wicker (R-MS)[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
