Mushaben is a Curators’ Professor of Comparative Politics and former Director of the Institute for Women’s and Gender Studies (2002-2005) at the University of Missouri – St. Louis. Fluent in German\, her teaching centers on comparative public policy\, the European Union\, women’s leadership\, citizenship\, immigration\, mega-cities\, and sustainability issues. Her research covers new social movements\, youth protest\, German unification and identities\, gender\, ethnicity and welfare issues\, EU migration and integration studies. A past President of the German Studies Association\, she has also served on the Executive Boards of the International Association for the Study of German Politics and the German Studies Association\, as well as on selection committees for Fulbright\, the German Academic Exchange Service\, and the American Council of Learned Societies. She is a current Editorial Board member for German Politics & Society\, German Politics\, and Femina Politica. Having received a 1999 Trailblazer Award and the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Research Creativity in 2007\, Dr. Mushaben is a three-time Alexander von Humboldt Fellow\, a former Ford Foundation Fellow\, German Marshall Fund grantee\, and DAAD recipient. She has held guest-scholar posts at the Academy for Social Sciences (GDR)\, the Center for Youth Research (GDR)\, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences\, and the Center for Transdisciplinary Gender Research. She was named the first Research Associate in the BMW Center for German & European Studies at Georgetown University\, has enjoyed Visiting Professorships at the Ohio State University\, Berlin’s Humboldt University\, the Missouri-London Program\, and the Universities of Erfurt\, Stuttgart\, and Tübingen\, inter alia. Full-day parking validation will be available for $16. \nJames Kirchick (@jkirchick) is a Visiting Fellow at the Center on the United States and Europe and Project on International Order and Strategy at the Brookings Institution. A widely published journalist\, he is author of The End of Europe: Dictators\, Demagogues\, and the Coming Dark Age (Yale\, 2017)\, a correspondent for The Daily Beast\, and a columnist for Tablet. Mr. Kirchick’s writing has appeared in The Washington Post\, The Wall Street Journal\, The New York Times\, The Los Angeles Times\, Ha’aretz\, Newsweek\, Time\, Foreign Policy\, Foreign Affairs\, Slate\, and National Review\, among other publications. His writing appears regularly in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. He is a frequent commentator on television and radio. For more than three years\, Mr. Kirchick worked at The New Republic\, where he covered domestic politics\, lobbying\, intelligence\, and American foreign policy. Prior to this position\, he served several years as Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) Parliamentary Group in the German Bundestag. Mr. Annen is also a member of the SPD’s Executive Committee and acts as the Chairperson of the SPD’s Commission for International Politics. His main foci of interest are transatlantic relations\, the Middle East\, and Russia\, as well as China and Latin America. From 2014 to 2018\, Mr. Annen also chaired the Bundestag’s Parliamentarian Friendship Group for Relations with the States of South Asia. As an advocate for a stronger German role in international diplomacy\, he supports multilateral engagement as a tool for resolving today’s conflicts and crises\, and protecting human rights. He was a senior resident fellow with the German Marshall Fund in Washington\, DC (2010 to 2011)\, and a researcher at the International Policy Analysis unit of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (2011 to 2013). From 2009 to 2012 he was Federal Minister for Environment\, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety. Additionally\, he held the position of Deputy Chair of the CDU in Germany as well as Chair of the CDU in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia from 2010 to 2012. From 2005 to 2009 he served as Chief Parliamentary Secretary of the CDU/CSU congressional party. Prior to this position\, he was the Legal Policy Spokesman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group. Preceding his first term in parliament\, Dr. Röttgen studied law in Bonn from 1984 to 1993 and subsequently worked in the regional court. He attained his doctoral degree in 2001. RSVP here by April 29. \nHelga Margarete Barth is Minister and Head of Political Affairs at the German Embassy in Washington DC. Prior to coming to Washington DC in August 2015\, she served as Head of the Middle Eastern and Asian Affairs Division\, on Chancellor Merkel’s foreign policy team (2010-2015). Her previous postings with the Federal Foreign Office include two years as the Ministry’s Research Coordinator on the Policy Planning Staff (2008-2010)\, a posting as Political Counselor in Ankara\, Turkey (2005-2008)\, and two years at the Division for Turkish Affairs (2003-2005). She has also served as Deputy Consul General in Guangzhou (Canton)\, China\, and as a political desk officer at the German Embassy in Tokyo. She first came to the United States to attend a summer program at the University of Delaware and later spent a year at Cornell University’s Asia Department. Ms. Barth holds a Master’s Degree in Chinese Studies (Sinology)\, Modern History\, and German Literature from Tubingen University\, Germany. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Los Angeles Warburg Chapter will host a discussion and luncheon with Peter Beyer\, Coordinator of Transatlantic Cooperation at the German Federal Foreign Office and Member of the German Bundestag (CDU). \nPeter Beyer serves as the Coordinator of Transatlantic Cooperation at the German Federal Foreign Office. He has been a member of the German Bundestag since 2009 and a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) since 1996. Mr. Beyer is also a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs\, where he serves as Special Rapporteur on Transatlantic Relations. He is Executive Vice President of the Southeast Europe Association. Prior to his current roles\, he served as Managing Chairman of the Heiligenhaus town branch of the CDU and a member of the Heiligenhaus town council from 2008 to 2009. In addition\, he was an elected member of the Executive Committee of the Mettmann county branch of the CDU. Before joining the public sector\, he worked as an attorney specializing in industrial property law in the Cologne office of Mayer Brown LLP\, the Los Angeles office of Murchison & Cumming LLP\, and the Chicago office of Brinks\, Hofer\, Gilson & Lione LLP. Mr. Beyer completed his undergraduate studies at the Universities of Düsseldorf and Bonn\, and received his Master in Law at the University of Virginia School of Law in Charlottesville.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

She is also a nonresident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution and co-chairs its Hewett Forum on Post-Soviet Affairs. From 2004 to 2006\, she was the National Intelligence Officer for Russia and Eurasia at the National Intelligence Council. From 1999 to 2001\, she served in the Office of Policy Planning at the U.S. Department of State. Dr. Stent’s academic work focuses on the triangular political and economic relationship between the United States\, Russia\, and Europe. \n  \nHer latest book is Putin’s World: Russia Against the West and With the Rest (Twelve\, 2019)\, for which she won the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy’s prize for the best book on U.S.-Russia relations. Other publications include: The Limits of Partnership: U.S.-Russian Relations in the Twenty-First Century (Princeton University Press\, 2014)\, for which she won the American Academy of Diplomacy’s Douglas Dillon prize for the best book on the practice of American diplomacy\, as well as Russia and Germany Reborn: Unification\, the Soviet Collapse\, and the New Europe (Princeton University Press\, 1999)\, and From Embargo to Ostpolitik: The Political Economy of West German-Soviet Relations\, 1955-1980 (Cambridge University Press\, 1981). \n  \nShe was a member of the senior advisory panel for NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander in Europe for Admiral James Stavridis and General Philip Breedlove. She is a contributing editor to Survival and is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Cold War Studies\, World Policy Journal\, Internationale Politik\, and Mirovaia Ekonomika i Mezhdunarodnie Otnosheniie. She has served on the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council for Russia and Central Asia\, and she is a Trustee of the Eurasia Foundation.
