From 1994 to 1999\, he studied Law at the University of Freiburg. He worked as a Lecturer in Commercial Law at the University of Cooperative Education (now Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University Lörrach) from 1999 to 2002. Mr. Frei practiced law from 2001 to 2002\, and from 2002 to 2004\, he served as a personal assistant to the Minister for State and European Affairs at the Baden-Württemberg State Ministry. He became the Mayor of Donaueschingen in 2004\, serving until 2013. From 1999 to 2004\, he was a member of the Bad Säckingen Town Council and Chairman of the CDU Parliamentary Group on the Bad Säckingen Municipal Council. From 2000 to 2004\, he was a member of the assembly of the Hochrhein-Bodensee Regional Association; Chairman of the Waldshut County branch of the CDU from 2001 to 2004; Chairman of the Baden-Württemberg Land branch of the Local Government Policy Association of the CDU from 2006 to 2016; Deputy Chairman of the Baden-Württemberg Land branch of the CDU since 2007; a member of the County Council since 2009; and Chairman of the CDU Parliamentary Group on Schwarzwald-Baar-Kreis County Council since 2011.  political salon: promoting dialogue across generations. This is part of the 2017 Transatlantic Global Agenda Series.  \nRSVP (acceptances only) to the American Council on Germany at 212-826-3636 or events@acgusa.org. \nMax Gruenig is the President of Ecologic Institute US and has been with Ecologic Institute since 2007. His work focuses on sustainable development in the energy and transportation sector\, as well as urban sustainability and resilient cities. In particular\, he is leading the efforts by Ecologic Institute in the Emerging Leaders in Environmental and Energy Policy Network (ELEEP). He is also coordinating Post-Carbon Cities of Tomorrow (POCACITO) in the U.S. and Germany and the European research project Post-Carbon Cities in Europe: A Long-Term Outlook. In 2004\, Mr. Gruenig received his degree in Economics from the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. The main focus of his studies was natural resource economics and auction theory. Mr. Gruenig has lived and worked in Germany\, the United States\, Iceland\, and Japan. He is a founding member of the European Institute for Sustainable Transport (EURIST)\, a member of the Sustainability Advisory Board for NaturEnergiePlus\, and a member of the Consumer Research Network run by the German Federal Ministry for Justice and Consumer Protection (BMJV). Mr. Gruenig coauthored the book Low-Carbon Energy Security from a European Perspective with Patrizia Lombardi in 2016.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

She has also reported on terrorism for The New York Times\, The International Herald Tribune\, and NPR\, and she is the co-author of The Eternal Nazi\, Children of Jihad\, and Islam. She was one of two reporters who broke the story of Khaled el Masri’s rendition case and worked on a series called “Inside the Jihad\,” where she and her colleagues interviewed members of radical jihadist organizations all over the world. Ms. Mekhennet was a 2012 Nieman Fellow at Harvard University\, and she has been a visiting fellow at the Weatherhead Center for International Policy at Harvard\, the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS)\, and the Geneva Center for Security Policy. The daughter of a Turkish mother\, and a Moroccan father\, she was born and educated in Germany. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Atlanta Warburg Chapter\, the Goethe Zentrum\, the Institute for Foreign Relations\, and the German Federal Foreign Office\, will host a discussion and reception with Professor Dr. Michael Haspel\, Director of the Evangelical Academy in Thuringia and Professor for Systematic Theology at Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena.  \nThere is no charge to attend this event. RSVP here by June 23. \nProfessor Dr. Michael Haspel is Director of the Evangelical Academy in Thuringia and Professor for Systematic Theology at Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena. He studied Protestant Theology\, Rhetoric\, and Public Law in Tübingen\, Bonn\, and Harvard\, and received a Master of Theology degree from the Harvard Divinity School and a Ph.D. in Theology from the University of Marburg. His emphasis is on social ethics. He was a guest lecturer at Stellenbosch University\, South Africa\, and the University of Tartu\, Estonia. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
