Prior to that\, he was a Research Associate and head of the research section on Russia\, Eastern Europe\, and the Caucasus at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs in Berlin. His academic degrees include\, in Germany\, an M.A. in Political Science from the Freie Universität in Berlin and\, in the United States\, an M.A. degree in International Relations\, a Certificate in Russian Studies\, and a Ph.D. with distinction\, all from Columbia University in New York City. In the past\, he also held teaching and/or research positions at institutions in se­veral countries\, including the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London\, the Royal Military College of Canada\, and the Rand Corporation in Santa Monica\, California. He is responsible for the Directorates General Markets and Information Technology. Prior to taking on his current position\, Mr. Wuermeling\, who has a Ph.D. in Law\, held a variety of executive-level posts in the financial and insurance industries as well as in politics. From 2011 until his departure for the Bundesbank\, Mr. Wuermeling was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Association of Sparda-Banken in Frankfurt am Main. Prior to that\, he was a member of the Executive Board of the German Insurance Association (Gesamtverband der Deutschen Versicherungswirtschaft) for around three years. From 2005 to 2008\, Mr. Wuermeling was State Secretary for European Affairs at the Federal Ministry for Economics and Technology\, where he was also responsible for coordinating European policy matters. Prior to this\, he was a member of the European Parliament (CSU) from 1999 to 2005. Mr. Wuermeling also is a lecturer on European politics at the Universities of Bayreuth and Potsdam.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Los Angeles Warburg Chapter will host a discussion and luncheon with Peter Beyer\, Member of the German Bundestag (CDU). \nThere is a $10 charge for ACG members and an $18 charge for nonmembers to attend this event. RSVP here by May 1. \nPeter Beyer was born on December 25\, 1970 in Ratingen\, Germany. After finishing his Abitur in 1991\, Mr. Beyer completed his military service in Wuppertal\, and then went on to study law at the Universities of Düsseldorf and Bonn. In 1999\, he finished his studies and was admitted to the bar. Mr. Beyer began his legal career as an associate attorney for the U.S.-headquartered firm of Mayer\, Brown & Platt (today Mayer Brown). He also worked with Brinks\, Hofer\, Gilson & Lione in Chicago and Murchison & Cumming in Los Angeles. In 2000\, he enrolled in a post-graduate legal studies program at the University of Virginia School of Law in Charlottesville where he completed a Master of Law in 2001. Returning to Germany\, Mr. Beyer practiced law at the BEYER Intellectual Property firm in Ratingen. There\, he became one of the country’s first officially-certified intellectual property specialists. Mr. Beyer was directly elected as Mettmann CDU’s top candidate for the federal elections in 2009 and 2013 to represent the citizens of Heiligenhaus\, Ratingen\, Velbert and Wülfrath. A committed Atlanticist for many years\, Mr. Beyer stands out among members of the parliament and his party as one of the most committed advocates of a strong transatlantic relationship with the United States and Canada. He serves as parliamentary Special Rapporteur on Transatlantic Relations for the Committee on Foreign Affairs\, and is an active member of Atlantik-Brücke\, Aspen Institute and United Europe\, in addition to numerous organizations in his district. Mr. Beyer is Vice-President of the Südosteuropa-Gesellschaft (Southeast Europe Association).[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

This series brings together a diverse group of younger and mid-career professionals for informal\, open discussions on a range of current political\, economic\, and social topics in an increasingly interconnected global environment – with an emphasis on issues of concern for the transatlantic agenda. Speakers share brief remarks and engage in a dynamic discussion with participants. Each salon includes refreshments and networking opportunities. \nThis event is timed to coincide with a visit by a delegation of 15 German influencers who hail from various professional backgrounds within the public sector (e.g.\, European Parliament\, the German Bundestag\, and the Junge Union) and private sector (e.g.\, Daimler\, Airbus\, and MAN). His research focuses on European foreign policy in a broad sense\, from integrating the Western Balkans into Euro-Atlantic structures to the European Union’s role in the negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program to the impact of the economic crisis on Europe’s global role. Since 2000\, Mr. Adebahr has been the owner of a political consultancy in Berlin. In addition\, he is an Associate Fellow at the Research Institute of the German Council on Foreign Relations as well as a member of Team Europe\, an experts’ network of the European Commission. From 2005 to 2011\, Mr. Adebahr was a lecturer at the Willy Brandt School of Public Policy at the University of Erfurt\, teaching a master’s course on European foreign policy. In 2012 and 2013\, he taught political science at the University of Tehran in Iran. Mr. Machnig was involved in the Social Democratic Party (SPD) as a campaign manager for the 2014 European elections\, as Chief of Staff to the General Secretary of the SPD and coordinator of the campaign headquarters from 1995 to 1998\, and as Deputy Head of Division at the SPD Parliamentary Group from 1991 to 1992. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The ACG will host the annual Garrick Utley Memorial Lecture on Global Media Issues with Tom Buhrow\, Director General of WDR\, and Jörg Schönenborn\, Television Director\, WDR and Television Film Coordinator\, ARD.  \nThere is a $45 charge for members to attend this event. (No-shows and cancellations after May 24 will be billed.) \nRSVP (acceptances only) to the American Council on Germany at 212-826-3636 or events@acgusa.org. \nTom Buhrow has been the Director General of WDR since 2013. Mr. Buhrow holds a Master’s degree in History and Political Science from the University of Bonn. In 1978\, he worked at the local newspaper Bonner General-Anzeiger. In 1985\, he volunteered at the largest television station in North Rhine-Westphalia\, WDR. Since 1986\, he was the Reporter\, Editor\, and Bureau Chief of the shows “Aktuelle Stunde” and “West 3 Aktuell.” After that\, he worked as a Reporter and Editor for Germany’s leading newsmagazine\, “Tagesschau.” In the run-up to the 1992 Presidential Election\, Mr. Buhrow became the ARD correspondent in Washington\, DC. Between January 2000 and 2002\, Mr. Buhrow worked as a correspondent at the ARD bureau in Paris. In July 2002\, he took over from Claus Kleber as chief of the ARD bureau in Washington. In September 2006\, he replaced Ulrich Wickert as the host of ARD’s flagship newsmagazine\, “Tagesthemen.” Also in 2006\, Mr. Buhrow published a book with Sabine Stamer about his years in the United States titled Mein Amerika\, Dein Amerika (My America\, Your America). \nJörg Schönenborn has been Television Director of WDR and Coordinator of Television Film at ARD since May 2014. Mr. Schönenborn studied Journalism and Politics. From 1997 to 2002\, he headed the WDR TV Current Affairs editorial group. From 2002 to 2014\, he was WDR Television Editor-in-Chief and Director of the Politics and Current Affairs program group. Under his direction\, a series of successful formats were developed\, including “hart aber fair\,” “Markencheck\,” “Wahlarena\,” and “Sport inside” on WDR Television. Mr. Schönenborn regularly presented election broadcasts on the 1st channel and the “ARD Presseclub.” For his reporting on the arson attack in Solingen\, he was recognized in 1993 and 1994 with the Telestar Prize and the Axel Springer Prize for Television Journalism. In 2005 and 2009\, as presenter of the ARD program “Wahlarena\,” he was nominated for the German Television Prize. In 2011\, as presenter of “Die Lange Obama Nacht – Halbzeit für den Präsident” he received the RIAS Television Prize. \nWith special thanks to Dr. Richard M.
