SUMMARY:New York: The Global Order in Transformation: How Can and Will Europe Ensure Its Own Security and Promote Stability in the International System?
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The ACG and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung of New York will host a discussion and luncheon with Klaus Welle\, Special Adviser to the European Commissioner for Defense and Space\, Chair of the Academic Council of the Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies\, and former Secretary-General of the European Parliament. \nEurope’s security environment is undergoing significant change. Russia’s war against Ukraine\, wider geopolitical shifts\, and renewed investment in European defense are reshaping discussions about Europe’s role in regional and international security. Against this backdrop\, the roundtable will explore how a more capable and strategically engaged Europe can strengthen both regional and global security. The discussion will consider European rearmament\, transatlantic cooperation\, and Europe’s broader role in supporting international peace and security through the United Nations and other multilateral institutions. In particular\, the exchange will examine how Europe can exercise greater leadership in conflict prevention and mediation\, peacekeeping and peacebuilding\, the protection of human rights\, and the defense of the principles of the UN Charter. More broadly\, participants will consider how stronger defense capabilities can be combined with sustained diplomatic and multilateral engagement to promote stability in an increasingly complex international environment. Following introductory remarks by Klaus Welle\, participants will be invited to engage in an open roundtable discussion. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nKlaus Welle served as the Secretary-General of the European Parliament from 2009 to 2022. He also served as the Secretary-General for the EPP and the European Union of Christian Democrats (EUCD)\, as well as the Head of the European and Foreign Policy Department at the CDU Central Office. \nMr. Welle holds a degree in Economics from the University of Witten/Herdecke and is the recipient of grants from the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes (German Academic Scholarship) and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Virtual: Making Life Affordable Again? The Role of the States and Bundesländer - A Transatlantic Discussion
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nIf there is one word defining election campaigns in 2026\, it’s affordability.\nRising inflation in the United States and Germany in recent years has meant stretched household budgets to cover everyday necessities like housing\, groceries\, and energy. From Montana to Michigan and from Saxony-Anhalt to Berlin\, affordability has become a powerful driver of voter frustration and a defining political issue in the many state-level campaigns in 2026. Populist movements on both the right and the left have increasingly tapped into these concerns to effectively mobilize voters\, and mainstream parties are making cost-of-living a centerpiece of their campaigns.\nThe many issues that have contributed to rising prices are often national or global in nature\, from lasting implications of the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine to trade disputes and geopolitical instability in the Middle East. Still\, legislators in states and Bundesländer are tapping into this issue beyond the nations’ capitals.\n\nBeyond campaign promises\, what can state-level legislators actually do to tackle the cost of living crisis? Which tools do they have to ease inflation\, strengthen economic resilience\, and help prevent future price shocks? How can political leaders communicate effectively with their constituents about complex economic issues? \nIn our next event as part of the State-to-State: German-American State Legislator Dialogue from the Aspen Institute Germany and the American Council on Germany\, subnational political leaders from both sides of the Atlantic will come together to discuss exactly these issues in an important election year\, when affordability is a concern everywhere. \n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Register Here” style=”classic” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fus02web.zoom.us%2Fwebinar%2Fregister%2F2217902611956%2FWN_S1aQePHSQViTGdiAxX8sCw” css=”.vc_custom_1790261229376{background-color: #1e73be !important;background-position: center !important;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;background-size: cover !important;}”][vc_column_text]Silke Gebel MdL (Alliance 90/TheGreens) Berlin House of Representatives\nSilke Gebel has led the Green Party’s parliamentary group in the Berlin House of Representatives (Abgeordnetenhaus) since 2016. Ms. Gebel took her first steps into politics with the Young European Federalists in 2001 in her hometown of Koblenz. Until 2006\, she served in several roles there\, including deputy chairwoman on the federal level. A member of Alliance 90/The Greens since 2003\, Ms. Gebel was initially active in the party’s youth organization\, eventually taking the role of Federal General Secretary. Between 2008 and 2009\, She also served as spokesperson for the National Committee for International Youth Policy. After moving to Berlin\, she served on the party board in the district of Mitte between 2011 and 2013. In January 2013\, she became a Member of Parliament in Berlin’s state diet\, the Abgeordnetenhaus. In parliament\, Ms. Gebel was the parliamentary group’s spokesperson for environmental issues\, as well as serving on the committee on city planning and an inquiry commission on New Energy. Following the Berlin state elections in 2016\, Ms. Gebel was elected as one of two equal chairwomen of the Green Party group in parliament\, a position she held until 2023. Since 2020\, she also chairs the parliamentary group of the Europa Union Berlin\, promoting European unity. \nDelegate Josh Holstein (R) West Virginia House of Delegates\nJosh Holstein serves as Chairman of the West Virginia Republican Party and as an elected member of the West Virginia House of Delegates. Raised in Boone County in southern West Virginia\, he comes from a family with deep roots in the coal industry. He was elected to the legislature in 2020 at just 19 years old\, making him one of the youngest state lawmakers in the country. He currently serves on committees focused on legal issues\, energy policy\, infrastructure\, and emerging technologies. Mr. Holstein graduated from Sherman High School and earned a degree in economics from Marshall University. His background shapes his focus on economic growth\, energy development\, and strengthening rural communities. Outside of public service\, he is a bluegrass and gospel musician. He became involved in politics as a teenager and has held leadership roles at both the county and state level. In 2025\, he was elected Chairman of the State Party. \nJessica Steiner MdL (CDU) State Parliament of Saxony\nJessica Steiner serves as a member of the Saxon State Parliament\, dedicated to advancing healthcare reform\, social welfare\, and policies supporting workers’ rights. Her legislative focus reflects her commitment to creating robust support systems for individuals and families\, especially those caring for vulnerable members of society. She began her career as an intensive care nurse\, training at the Carl-von-Basedow-Klinikum in Merseburg and working for several years at the Heart Centre Leipzig\, specializing in cardiology. Ms. Steiner also spent six months at Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust\, gaining an international perspective on healthcare practices. Back in Leipzig\, she led a project to implement a national nursing standard in cardiology care. In 2018\, family obligations led her to pause her medical studies at the University of Leipzig to care for her grandmother\, who suffered from dementia. This experience reinforced her belief in the importance of accessible social care frameworks and inspired her policy focus on family support and eldercare. In 2021\, Ms. Steiner ran as a Bundestag candidate\, and her dedication to social policies earned her a position on the CDU federal executive board and the Christian Democratic Workers’ Association (CDA) board in 2022. She advocates for policies that prioritize the working class\, guided by Christian Social Teaching. Ms. Steiner’s journey from intensive care nursing to legislative office underscores her commitment to public service and social cohesion\, a mission she continues to champion as a parliamentarian. \nDelegate Lily Qi (D) Maryland House of Delegates\nLily Qi is a Maryland state delegate representing Montgomery County\, a suburb of Washington\, D.C. She is the author of Elected American: From Red China to Blue Maryland\, her 2026 memoir about immigrant participation in American democracy. As the first American state legislator to have grown up in the People’s Republic of China\, she was featured in The Washington Post\, NPR\, Voice of America\, and Radio Free Asia\, which turned her story into a graphic novel. Ms. Qi is a leading voice in Annapolis for economic competitiveness and open primary elections. She was named “Legislator of the Year” three times for championing the innovation economy and small businesses. Her legislation has led to a designated state green bank for clean energy innovation\, millions of dollars in matching grants for industries of the future\, Maryland’s Family and Medical Leave Insurance (FAMLI) program\, and the Governor’s LGBTQ+ Commission. Before elective office\, Ms. Qi had a diverse career in economic development\, public engagement\, and local government\, including as a political appointee of former County Executive Ike Leggett. She has served on numerous boards and commissions. A cultural broker\, Ms. Qi speaks on immigrant integration\, business climate\, civic and political engagement\, and the Asian American experience.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:New York: Germany's Foreign and Security Policy Today: Navigating the Polycrisis and a Fractured Transatlantic Relationship
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The ACG and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation will host a discussion and reception with Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer\, Chairwoman of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and former Federal Minister of Defense of Germany. \nThe international environment is very different today than it was in the immediate post-World War II era as Konrad Adenauer was navigating myriad challenges. Today\, the international order faces pressures on more fronts than at almost any point since then. Armed conflicts have reached a record level as Russia’s illegal war of aggression in Ukraine rages on\, military conflict intensifies in the Middle East\, and instability continues to spiral in Sudan\, the Sahel\, and elsewhere. At the same time\, the international community is struggling to address the effects of climate change\, the risk of future pandemics\, energy and economic insecurity\, and rapid technological change – including advances in artificial intelligence and autonomous weapons. Any of these challenges alone would put significant pressure on the multilateral system. Their combination raises a broader question about whether an order designed in the twentieth century is still equipped to meet the demands of the twenty-first. \nTensions are also playing out in the transatlantic relationship – which for decades has been a central pillar of the Western security order in general and for Germany in particular. Since returning to office\, the Trump administration has challenged several long-standing assumptions about the transatlantic partnership. For one\, Washington has put renewed pressure on European allies to increase defense spending and has raised questions about the extent of future American security commitments. More broadly\, the administration has taken a more transactional approach to alliances. Meanwhile in Europe\, far-right\, nationalist\, and Euroskeptic parties are gaining ground\, and their growing electoral support is increasingly influencing mainstream political debate. \nAs the United Nations’ second-largest contributor\, Europe’s largest economy\, and NATO’s most significant European member\, inter alia\, Germany’s decisions on multilateralism\, defense\, security\, and European integration have far-reaching repercussions. In this time of crisis and geopolitical recalibration\, how can – and should – Germany and Europe respond? What lessons from Konrad Adenauer’s leadership can be applied to today’s challenging times?[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Virtual Event – The Heat Is On: Health\, Society\, and Climate Adaptation
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”26300″ img_size=”large”][vc_column_text] \n\nJoin us for a discussion with experts from both sides of the Atlantic as they compare perspectives from Germany and the United States\, explore the medical and social dimensions of heat protection\, and consider how healthcare systems\, patients\, and communities can respond to rising temperatures. The conversation will address both the immediate health risks posed by heat and the broader societal challenge of strengthening resilience in a changing climate. \n\n\nA truly hot topic: With rising temperatures and more frequent heat waves\, the health impacts of heat are becoming increasingly urgent. Yet temperatures do not need to reach extreme levels to pose serious risks. They can trigger heart attacks and strokes and contribute to a growing burden of heat-related mortality that is likely to intensify with climate change and population aging. The effects are felt not only at the level of public health but also in everyday medical care\, where a prescription that is safe in the winter may become dangerous during a hot summer. \nHow dangerous is heat really\, even when temperatures do not appear extreme? How do rising temperatures affect healthcare systems\, patients\, and vulnerable populations? What forms of prevention\, patient education\, and community support are needed to reduce heat-related health risks? And how can societies adapt to the growing public health challenges posed by a warming world? \nBrought to you by the University of Cologne NY Office\, ACG\, DWIH NY\, DFG & partners. \n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Register Here” style=”classic” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.eventbrite.com%2Fe%2Fthe-heat-is-on-health-society-and-climate-adaptation-registration-1997508787555%3Faff%3Doddtdtcreator” css=”.vc_custom_1787081424433{background-color: #1e73be !important;background-position: center !important;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;background-size: cover !important;}”][vc_column_text]Dr. Beate Müller is a Professor for General Practice and the Director of the Institute of General Practice at the Faculty of Medicine and University Hospital Cologne\, University of Cologne. Ryback is an American historian\, author\, and journalist whose work focuses on twentieth-century European history and the legacy of the Holocaust. He has written on history and politics for more than three decades. He is the author of several books on Hitler’s Germany\, including 53 Days: How Hitler Dismantled a Democracy\, which was recently reviewed by the New York Times\, as well as Hitler’s Private Library\, a Washington Post Best Book of the Year\, and The Last Survivor\, a New York Times Notable Book. His books have been translated into more than 30 languages. Dr. Ryback has published extensively on the complexities of unresolved historical legacies for The New Yorker\, The New York Times Magazine\, The Wall Street Journal\, The Atlantic\, and the Financial Times\, among others. He is the Cofounder and Director of the Institute for Historical Justice and Reconciliation in The Hague. Dr. Ryback previously served as the Deputy Director-General of the Académie Diplomatique Internationale in Paris and as Vice President and Resident Director of the Salzburg Global Seminar in Salzburg\, Austria. Dr. Ryback holds a doctorate from Harvard University\, where he has also served as a lecturer in History and Literature. He and his wife live in Europe. \nThe Dr. Richard M. Hunt Memorial Lecture Series honors late ACG Vice Chairman Dr. Richard M. Hunt\, who was deeply committed to strengthening ties between Germany and the United States and gave exceptional support to the ACG for 50 years. He was the first and longest-serving President in the organization’s history\, from 1972 to 1988\, and subsequently served as Vice Chairman until his passing on April 10\, 2020. During his tenure\, Rick Hunt worked tirelessly behind the scenes to help create the American-German Young Leaders Conference\, launched in 1973\, and the McCloy Fellowship program\, launched in 1976 – both of which remain central to our work today. He also helped shape the German-American Conference. These programs are just a fraction of his many lasting legacies to the Council. His wise counsel\, his keen knowledge of German-American relations\, his faith in younger generations\, and his warm\, unassuming manner are sorely missed.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:New York: Book Reading "Farewell to America"
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The ACG and Deutsches Haus at NYU will host a book reading and discussion with Marc Pitzke\, Correspondent for Der Spiegel and Author of „Abschied von Amerika\,“ and moderated by Gudrun Engel\, Washington Bureau Chief for ARD. \nIn Farewell to America (2026\, DVA)\, long-time Der Spiegel journalist Marc Pitzke writes about a country he no longer recognizes: Suddenly\, his adopted homeland feels foreign to him\, incomprehensible\, almost frightening. He’s spent half his life in the United States\, as a reporter and a private citizen\, but today it is no longer the country where he sought and ultimately found his happiness. Life\, liberty\, and the pursuit of happiness: the values that once drew Marc to the U.S. have lost their meaning. \nMarc Pitzke has been reporting from New York for more than three decades. He reported on major news stories\, Bush vs. Gore\, and six other U.S. presidential races\, the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11\, hurricanes “Katrina” and “Sandy\,” Obama’s inauguration\, as well as from gay pride parades and nightclubs with Madonna. But now his future in America is at stake—as is the future of his Black U.S. husband. His personal reflections are also political. What remains of a country whose dreams have been shattered? And what if these were his dreams too? \n[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Register Here” style=”classic” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.eventbrite.com%2Fe%2Ffarewell-to-america-an-evening-with-marc-pitzke-and-gudrun-engel-tickets-2002171678387%3Faff%3Doddtdtcreator” css=”.vc_custom_1792156190860{background-color: #1e73be !important;background-position: center !important;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;background-size: cover !important;}”][vc_column_text] \nGudrun Engel studied journalism and political science at the universities of Dortmund\, Gothenburg\, Sweden\, and Kaunas\, Lithuania. At Westdeutscher Rundfunk\, she worked as an editor and reporter for several local newspapers\, WDR aktuell\, Aktuelle Stunde\, and Phoenix. Starting in 2012\, she reported from North Rhine-Westphalia as a correspondent for Tagesschau and Tagesthemen\, as well as their online formats. In addition\, she worked as a correspondent for ARD’s Morgenmagazin and Weltspiegel and served as a studio correspondent in Nairobi\, New York\, and Paris. From 2019 to 2022\, she worked as a correspondent at ARD Europe Studio in Brussels\, covering the European Union\, NATO\, and the Netherlands. Since July 2022\, she has headed the ARD studio in Washington. \nMarc Pitzke studied at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich\, the German School of Journalism (DJS)\, and Columbia University’s School of Journalism in New York City. He worked at Bayerischer Rundfunk as a correspondent for Reuters in Berlin during the years leading up to and following the fall of the Berlin Wall\, as a reporter and later as U.S. correspondent for Die Woche\, and as a freelance contributor for GEO\, Merian\, and other publications. From 2003 until 2026\, he was the U.S. correspondent for Der Spiegel in New York. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:After the Dust Settles: Understanding the Results of Germany’s Recent State Elections
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Germany’s recent state elections have revealed important shifts in the country’s political landscape\, with implications that extend well beyond regional politics\, delivering strong results for both the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) and Die Linke while challenging Germany’s traditional governing parties. The outcomes have raised pressing questions about voter dissatisfaction\, economic insecurity\, migration\, democratic resilience\, and the future of coalition-building\, particularly in eastern Germany. As party leaders and policymakers assess the results\, these elections offer a window into the changing priorities of German voters\, the broader forces reshaping the country’s political landscape\, and the potential impact for the current federal government coalition. \nJoin us on October 26 at 11:00 am ET for a virtual discussion with Prof. Dr. Thorsten Faas\, Professor at Otto-Suhr-Institute of Political Science of the Freie Universität Berlin and Hannah Arendt Visiting Chair for German and European Studies at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the University of Toronto\, as we assess what the elections in Saxony-Anhalt\, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern\, and Berlin mean for Germany.[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Register Here” style=”classic” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fus02web.zoom.us%2Fwebinar%2Fregister%2F2817921665205%2FWN_RX2XwbCoQGiL3Cu2DlFZDg” css=”.vc_custom_1792166570328{background-color: #1e73be !important;background-position: center !important;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;background-size: cover !important;}”][vc_column_text]Professor Dr. Thorsten Faas is one of Germany’s most renowned election researchers.
