Sir Kier Starmer and his Labour Party won 412 of the 650 seats in the House of Commons and enjoy a stable majority\, which should allow the new government to implement its agenda\, while the Tories lost 250 seats. \nVoters hope that the new Prime Minister and his party will rejuvenate the country during the five-year term it has won – and some pundits are already talking about a second term. But\, a recent report released by the Institute for Public Policy Research thinktank found that just 52 percent of UK adults took to the polls on 4 July. This is the lowest turnout by share of the population since universal suffrage was introduced in 1928. \nJoin the ACG for a virtual discussion with award-winning German journalist Annette Dittert as part of our Superwahljahr 2024 series. From 2020 to 2023\, she lived in the occupied West Bank\, where she worked for a German political foundation and reported on her private Instagram account about political realities and everyday life on the ground. Particularly since October 7th\, Jabarine has been one of the few Palestinian voices in German public discourse. \nBen Mauk is a writer\, filmmaker\, and journalist. His work appears in The New York Times Magazine\, The New Yorker\, Harper’s\, Granta\, and the London Review of Books\, among other publications. He is a current National Fellow at New America and a National Endowment for the Humanities Public Scholar\, and is a winner of the Emmy Award and Peabody Award\, among other honors. He teaches at Case Western Reserve University\, where he is the Shirley Wormser Professor of Journalism and Media Writing. Before joining Capital\, he was Deputy Assistant to President Clinton where he coordinated his economic conferences\, served as the president’s liaison to the nation’s governors\, and led the administration’s efforts to obtain congressional approval of the GATT Uruguay Round Agreement and the extension of China s MFN trading status. Additionally\, he was appointed by President Obama to serve on his Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations. Before working in the Clinton White House\, Ambassador Emerson served as Los Angeles Chief Deputy City Attorney\, and was a partner in the law firm of Manatt\, Phelps\, Rothenberg\, and Phillips. \nJuliane Schäuble is the U.S. Correspondent of Der Tagesspiegel\, Berlin’s biggest newspaper. Before she moved to Washington\, DC\, in June 2018 she was the head of the political department of the paper where she was responsible for the front page and the political section. She has more than twelve years of experience in the business and the political department of Der Tagesspiegel. \nMs. Schäuble earned her Master’s in Political Science at the University in Potsdam\, Germany. The event will take place from 8:00am-9:30am (CDT) at The Chicago Club.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator color=”black” border_width=”2″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Metin Hakverdi joined the SPD in 2002 and has been a member of the German Bundestag since 2013. His reelection in Hamburg-Harburg in 2021 was resounding — with nearly 40 percent of the vote. He serves on the Bundestag’s Committee on European Union Affairs and on the Finance Committee. He is the Chairman of the USA/North America Working Group within the SPD Parliamentary Group and a member of the German-American Parliamentary Friendship Group in the German Bundestag. \nBefore being elected to the Bundestag\, Mr. Hakverdi was a member of the Parliament of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg from 2008 to 2013\, where he was on the Budget Committee and the Committee of Public Companies and Assets. He attended high school in Simi Valley\, California\, in 1985/86 and studied law at the Christian-Albrecht University in Kiel and at Indiana University’s Maurer School of Law. He became licensed to practice law in 2000. \n  \nThomas Silberhorn has been a member of the German Bundestag since 2002. Since 2021 he has served as the Spokesman of the CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group for Transatlantic Relations. Mr. Silberhorn was the Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development from 2014 to 2018. From 2009 to 2013\, he was the Chairman of the CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group on the Legal Affairs Committee. He chaired the CSU regional group’s working group on foreign affairs\, defense\, Europe\, economic cooperation and development\, human rights and humanitarian aid from 2005 to 2013. He joined the CSU in 1987 and was on the Board of the CSU’s Junge Union from 1998 to 2002. Mr. Silberhorn is a lawyer. After his second state examination in 1994\, he worked as a research assistant at the University of Bayreuth. He previously held this office from 2014 until February 5\, 2020. In this capacity\, he has also been a member of the Bundesrat\, and served as its President for one year from November 1\, 2021 until October 31\, 2022. Mr. Ramelow is a member of the Left Party and previously chaired his party’s group in the Thuringian state assembly (Landtag). \nMr. Ramelow was born and raised in West Germany. He trained as a retail salesman and became an official in the Gewerkschaft Handel\, Banken und Versicherungen (HBV)\, the union for trade\, bank\, and insurance employees\, during the 1980s. He moved to the eastern German state of Thuringia after German unification and joined the Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS). He was elected to the Landtag in 1999 and became Deputy Chairman and then\, in 2001\, Chairman of the party’s parliamentary group in the state parliament. \nIn February 2004\, Mr. Ramelow was elected top candidate of the PDS in the Thuringian state elections\, and was re-elected as the Chairman of the PDS in Thuringia. Starting in June 2005\, Mr. Ramelow was chief negotiator during unification talks which ultimately led to the creation of a new party\, Die Linke (The Left). From 2005 to 2009\, he was a Member of the German Bundestag and Deputy Chairman of the Die Linke parliamentary group\, and from 2009 to 2014\, he served as the Chairman of the Die Linke state parliamentary group in Thuringia. Following elections in September 2014\, Mr. Ramelow was elected by the Landtag as the Minister-President of the Free State of Thuringia – with the support of the Social Democratic Party and the Greens\, which had joined Die Linke in a coalition. Cobb Award for Exemplary Diplomatic Service\, an award given annually to one non-career Ambassador. In 2017\, the Secretary of the Navy and the Director of the CIA awarded him their highest civilian honors for his service. \nPrior to accepting the ambassadorial posting\, John Emerson was President of Private Client Services for the Capital Group Companies. Before joining Capital\, he was Deputy Assistant to President Clinton where he coordinated his economic conferences\, served as the president’s liaison to the nation’s governors\, and led the administration’s efforts to obtain congressional approval of the GATT Uruguay Round Agreement and the extension of China s MFN trading status. Additionally\, he was appointed by President Obama to serve on his Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations. Before working in the Clinton White House\, Ambassador Emerson served as Los Angeles Chief Deputy City Attorney and was a partner in Manatt\, Phelps\, Rothenberg\, and Phillips law firm. \nDr. Daniel S. Hamilton is a Senior Fellow at the SAIS Foreign Policy Institute and a non-resident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution. She arrives at GMF after 12 years at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS)\, where she most recently served as senior vice president for Europe\, Eurasia\, and the Arctic and as director of the Europe\, Russia\, and Eurasia Program. She previously served four years as executive director of the Office of the Chairman of the Board at the American National Red Cross\, where she supported the first comprehensive reform of the governance structure of the American Red Cross Board since 1947\, incorporating modern best-governance practices. She worked closely with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on the International Movement’s policies and programs in the Middle East and elsewhere. From 2001 to 2005\, Ms. Conley was deputy assistant secretary of state in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs with responsibilities for U.S. bilateral relations with the countries of Northern and Central Europe. She co-led the U.S. interagency effort to enlarge NATO and secure Senate ratification of an Amended NATO Treaty\, and she created a senior level U.S. dialogue with the eight Nordic and Baltic states\, the Enhanced Partnership in Europe (e-PINE). \nMs. Conley began her career in the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs at the U.S. Department of State. She was selected to serve as special assistant to the coordinator of U.S. assistance to the newly independent states of the former Soviet Union\, and she has received two State Department Meritorious Honor Awards. SUMMARY:Building Resilience and Protecting Critical Infrastructure
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]While global challenges are addressed by national governments\, increasingly subnational actors such as states\, communities\, and cities have needed to step up to take action when traditional nation-states have not been able to make progress due to political polarization and partisan gridlock. The German-American State Legislator Dialogue will take on the challenge of infrastructure with state legislators from the United States\, Canada\, and Germany. They will focus on the role state governments can play in addressing common concerns when it comes to building resilience and managing threats to critical infrastructure. \nCritical infrastructure forms the backbone of modern\, well-functioning societies. Unfortunately\, these infrastructures face increasing threats from natural disasters\, health crises\, as well as physical and cyberattacks on both sides of the Atlantic. While defining critical infrastructure is complex\, in general\, it refers to the systems\, organizations\, facilities\, assets\, services\, and networks that are essential to the well-functioning of societies. Subnational governments play a fundamental role in proactively safeguarding the security and functionality of critical infrastructure\, as well as in developing guidelines for responding to potential disruptions. As a result\, they are often at the forefront of such disasters because they are closer to affected communities and play a key role in emergency response operations. They also play a key role in coordinating with other levels of government and non-governmental organizations to ensure a coordinated and effective response. What are the primary challenges faced by policymakers at the state level in managing threats to critical infrastructure? What mechanisms are in place to quickly react to crises on both sides of the Atlantic\, and how can we learn from one another? He currently serves as the Shadow Minister for Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation. Mr. Lee has served as the Official Opposition Critic for Transportation\, Infrastructure\, and TransLink\, the Official Opposition Critic for Justice\, and as the Parliamentary Secretary for Affordable Housing. He is a member of the Select Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs\, the Select Standing Committee on Legislative Initiatives\, and the Select Standing Committee on Parliamentary Reform\, Ethical Conduct\, Standing Orders\, and Private Bills.\nBefore his election\, Mr. Lee was a business lawyer for 20 years and a partner with Lawson Lundell LLP\, focusing on mergers & acquisitions\, corporate finance\, and corporate governance. He acted for energy\, mining\, forestry\, technology companies\, and as external counsel to BC Hydro. Before obtaining his law degree at the University of Victoria\, he worked as a Special Assistant to the Right Honourable Kim Campbell in Vancouver and Ottawa\, Canada. She was head of bilateral technical cooperation programs in the health sector in Bangladesh\, India\, Burkina Faso\, Kenya\, and Tanzania. In this capacity\, she coordinated support in the areas of health systems strengthening\, reproductive health\, and health emergency preparedness. Dr. Richter-Airijoki was Principal Advisor on Child Survival and Development for the West and Central African Region for the United Nations children’s organization\, UNICEF. She coordinated the National Capacity Building for the Tobacco Free Initiative for the World Health Organization (WHO) and consulted the German federal government on the global strategy for pandemic preparedness. As a technical delegate from Germany\, she also consulted the European Commission and the World Bank in areas of program planning and evaluation. Since 2021\, Dr. Richter-Airijoki has been a member of the Regional Parliament of Saxony-Anhalt for the constituency of Lutherstadt Wittenberg. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]In 2012\, Mario Draghi pledged to do “whatever it takes” to save the euro when he led the European Central Bank. Earlier this month\, the former Italian Prime Minister released a report on ‘The Future of EU Competitiveness\,’ which was intended to jolt the stalling European economy into high gear. The report recommends three priorities: First\, Europe must refocus its collective efforts on closing the innovation gap with the U.S. and China so that it can remain a player in emerging technologies. Second\, the EU needs to pursue decarbonization objectives while remaining competitive. And third\, the EU should increase its security and reduce external dependencies\, by pursuing access to critical raw materials\, developing its own digital services\, and strengthening its defense industry. Draghi’s report contains many proposals addressing these three priorities\, calibrated to be implementable over the next few years. But EU member states will need to coalesce around a coherent plan to boost growth and rescue the European economy. \nIs this the “whatever it takes 2.0” moment for Europe’s economy? As head of macro research for the firm since 2012\, she focuses on economic activity\, macro-political trends\, and policy in the U.S. and China\, and is a keen student of European political economy. Ms. Hariharan directs top-down analysis of macroeconomic data\, monetary and fiscal policy\, and political trends for countries and regions worldwide\, as well as maintenance and constant evolution of NWI’s “macro dashboard” with a strategic focus on potential investment opportunities in fixed income\, equities\, foreign exchange\, and commodities. Her analysis is notably informed by sustained dialogue with a diverse group of high-level global policymakers in both developed and emerging markets. \nMs. Hariharan earned a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology summa cum laude from Princeton University in 2007. She was awarded a 2014 American Marshall Memorial Fellowship by the German Marshall Fund of the United States. Ms. Hariharan has been a member of the Council on Foreign Relations since 2017. She is also closely involved with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and has been a member of the Chamber’s Chief Economists’ Committee since the summer of 2020. She was elected a member of the Inter-American Dialogue in July 2021 and is a 2022 Economic Club of New York Fellow. She was an ACG Young Leader in 2016. \nProf. Dr. Michael Hüther studied Economics and History at the Justus-Liebig University in Giessen from 1982 to 1987. Upon completion of his doctorate in Economics\, in 1991 he became a member of the scientific staff of the Council of Experts for the Evaluation of Macroeconomic Development. In 1995 he was appointed Secretary General of the German Council of Economic Advisers. In 1999\, he joined DekaBank as chief economist and in 2001 additionally as Division Manger economics and communication. Since August 2001 Prof. Hüther is Honorary Professor at the European Business School in Oestrich-Winkel. \nIn July 2004 he was appointed Director and Member of the Presidium of the German Economic Institute. In this role\, he is serving German MNCs with operations in the United States and collaborates with PwC teams from all PwC Lines of Services in the U.S. and Germany. His clients include companies from various industries such as automotive\, chemicals and retail & consumer products. In his previous role\, Mr. Heck was the Head of the China Business Group at PwC Germany and Chairman of the European China Business Group at PwC from August 2016 until April 2024. He advised Chinese companies on their investments in Europe as well as European companies with their investment in China and Asia. During a secondment to China from 2012 – 2016\, Mr. Heck led the German Business Group of PwC Hong-Kong and Mainland China. During a secondment to New York 2005-2007\, he served US MNCs as an audit manager. \nMr. Heck graduated from Hochschule Pforzheim in 1998. From 2000 to 2005\, he was a guest lecturer at Pforzheim Business School. From 2012 to 2016\, he was a guest lecturer at Tongji University in Shanghai. Mr. Heck is a frequent speaker at conferences and guest on podcasts. \nFrauke Steiner is a Partner in the Assurance practice at EY Germany and has been assigned to EY US since summer 2024. She leads the firm’s German Business Network in the U.S.\, where she supports German\, Austrian\, and Swiss businesses. She has significant industry experience in the automotive sector and industrial production. \nMs. Steiner joined EY in 2006 and worked in Nuremberg. Before her secondment to New York\, she spent eight years in China as one of three GBN representative for China auditing\, coordinating engagements\, and advising German-speaking clients doing businesses in Greater China. Ms. Steiner has several years’ experience auditing listed DAX40 enterprises including the assessment of internal control environment (SOX) as well as providing audit and advisory services to mid-size and larger companies in Germany and subsidiaries overseas. \nMs. Steiner studied Business Administration at the University of Nuremberg and holds a dual degree Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) from Tsinghua University and INSEAD European Business School.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:How Can International Cooperation Strengthen Democracy and Combat Antisemitism in Germany and the United States?
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]October 7th marks the first anniversary of the bloody attack on a music festival in Israel by Hamas. Over 1\,000 people were killed\, dozens of people are still being held hostage by Hamas\, and the region is at war. Against this backdrop\, there has been a spike in antisemitic hate crimes around the world. In the United States\, the FBI reported a 63 percent increase over 2022. In Germany\, the monitoring group RIAS reported that antisemitic incidents rose by over 80 percent in 2023 – reaching a new high since RIAS started keeping track in 2017. \nJoin the American Council on Germany on Monday\, October 7\, at 11 am ET\, for a virtual discussion with antisemitism expert Dr. Sharon S. Nazarian\, the President of the Y&S Nazarian Family Foundation. She has been exploring how the rise in antisemitism can be seen as an indicator of the waning health of democracy. She will talk about the myriad challenges posed by increasing antisemitism and how international cooperation can be implemented to address the problem and shore up democracy. Dr. Nazarian just completed a speaking tour for the ACG\, which included discussions in four Eric M. She is an expert on antisemitism and its intersection with democratic crisis across Europe\, North America\, and Australia. Earlier this year\, she was the inaugural Gahl Hodges Burt Scholar at the American Academy in Berlin. \nDr. Nazarian is the founder of the Younes & Soraya Nazarian Center for Israel Studies at University of California\, Los Angeles\, housed at UCLA’s International Institute\, which provides a systematic\, academic study of contemporary Israel. In 2017\, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) appointed Dr. Nazarian as Senior Vice President in international affairs. She served in this role for five years\, acting as chief diplomat and policymaker of ADL\, meeting with heads of state\, foreign ministers\, and leaders of Jewish communities around the world and advancing ADL’s initiatives for fighting antisemitism and racial hatred globally. She also oversaw ADL’s Israel office. \nDr. Nazarian currently serves as a member of ADL’s national board of directors\, a trustee of the board of Freedom House\, and is a member of the Council of Foreign Relations. She also chairs the board of the Y&S Nazarian Center for Israel Studies at UCLA and sits on the board of governors of University of Haifa. Dr. Nazarian studied Journalism and International Relations at the University of Southern California\, where also received her master’s and doctoral degrees in Political Science\, specializing in political economy and economic development in newly industrialized countries.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
