If you are interested in attending\, please email events@acgusa.org with your name\, affiliation\, and title\, for more information. \nDr. Heike Henn studied political science\, economics\, and law at the University of Duisburg. Since August 2025. She has served as the Director General for International Climate Action in the Federal Ministry for the Environment\, Climate Action\, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN)\, and has co-chaired the Climate Club together with Türkiye since January 2026. \nDr. Henn has almost 30 years of experience in the field of development policy\, covering research\, non-governmental organizations\, and the governmental sector. Prior to her current role\, she worked at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in various positions\, most recently as the Director for Climate\, Energy and Environment and as Commissioner for Climate Policy and Climate Financing. She also previously served as the Coordinator of the German G8 Africa Personal Representative\, Head of German Development Cooperation in Burundi and Rwanda\, Head of Division Special Initiative ONEWORLD – No Hunger\, and as Head of Division of Policy Issues of Cooperation with Civil Society and Private Organizations. \nChristopher Wenk joined Mercedes-Benz as Vice President of External Affairs on November 3\, 2025. In this role\, he leads all regulatory and legislative strategic engagement for MBNAC. Prior to Mercedes-Benz\, Mr. Wenk was the Vice President of Government Affairs of Kia Motors Corporation Washington. He previously worked for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce\, where he served as the Executive Director of International Policy and Chief Trade Lobbyist. \nPrior to the Chamber\, Mr. Wenk directed international trade policy at the National Association of Manufacturers\, advocating on behalf of its members with the administration and Congress. Mr. Wenk spent five years on Capitol Hill working for the House Small Business Committee and U.S. Representatives Steve Chabot (R-Ohio) and Dave Camp (R-Michigan). Born and raised in Ann Arbor\, Michigan\, Mr. Wenk holds a Master of Arts in Political Management and Corporate Public Affairs & Government Relations from the George Washington University in Washington\, D.C.\, and his Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice and Spanish from Indiana University in Bloomington\, Indiana. \nCorinna Wolf has led Infineon’s sustainability department since June 2024 and reports to the Infineon Executive Board. She is responsible for the company’s sustainability strategy and oversees its implementation across all business units. In this role\, she plays a key role in driving Infineon’s decarbonization efforts not only within the company itself but also across its products and applications. Starting in June 2024\, Infineon will become the first semiconductor company worldwide to provide its customers with the CO2 footprint of its products at a level of detail and transparency that is unprecedented in the industry. \nMs. Wolf is a passionate advocate for sustainability\, innovation\, and digitalization in close alignment with growth. She believes that only through this combination can the urgently needed progress be achieved. Previously\, Ms. Wolf led marketing communications\, partnership management\, and new application initiatives within Infineon’s Power Sensor & Systems business unit. In this role\, she was responsible for all product and application campaigns\, trade shows\, and events; for testing innovative formats to position Infineon in the areas of decarbonization and digitalization; and for generating revenue and strengthening brand positioning through partnerships. \nFrom 2016 to 2022\, Ms. Wolf worked as a Global HR Business Partner for Infineon’s CMO\, where she drove key transformation projects in sales and marketing for Infineon as well as digitalization efforts. From 2009 to 2015\, Corinna worked for ENGIE\, a French energy conglomerate. During this time\, she lived and worked in Brussels for three years and in Milan for half a year. Ms. Wolf began her career in 2003 at Qimonda Dresden\, where she supported the insolvency process from an HR perspective in 2008–2009. This experience significantly shaped her leadership style and her commitment to the continuous development of people and organizations. From 1997 to 2003\, Ms. Wolf studied business education\, human resources and finance\, as well as English and American studies at TU Dresden. In 1989\, he joined the Süddeutsche Zeitung and covered the regime changes in Hungary\, Romania\, and Bulgaria. \nFrom 2017 to 2018\, Dr. von Marschall was the inaugural Helmut Schmidt Fellow of the Zeit Foundation and the German Marshall Fund of the United States\, based in Washington\, DC. Informed through his access to the White House as a member of the Press Corps during Donald Trump’s first term\, he wrote a book about the future of Germany’s foreign policy: Wir Verstehen die Welt Nicht Mehr. Deutschlands Entfremdung von Seinen Freunden (“We Don’t Understand the World Anymore. Germany’s Estrangement from Its Friends”). From 1976 to 1979\, he was a research associate for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in the German Bundestag. From 1979 to 2014\, he was a continuous Member of the European Parliament\, serving as its President from 2007 to 2009. Previously\, from 1999 to 2007\, he was Chairman of the EPP-ED Group in the European Parliament. From January 2010 to the end of December 2017\, he served as Chairman of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and is currently its Representative for European Affairs. \nProf. Dr. Pöttering is the initiator and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the House of European History\, which opened in Brussels in May 2017.From 2018 to 2022\, he was President of the “Former Members Association” of the European Parliament in Brussels. Prior to this\, he held a number of roles in the German Federal Foreign Office for over two decades\, including most recently as the Commissioner for Crisis Management\, heading the Crisis Task Force of the Federal Government. He previously served as Head of the Crisis Response Center\, Head of the Refugee and Migration Task Force\, Deputy Director for the Division for Policy Issues in European Affairs\, advisor at the office of the State Secretary and at the International Law section of the Legal Department. His postings abroad include Islamabad (Pakistan) and Damascus (Syria)\, both times as Minister Counsellor. \n\nDr. Jokisch studied Law in Passau and Toulouse after completing military service from 1989-1992\, including training as a reserve officer. General Ray is a highly decorated\, retired United States Air Force Four-Star General who most recently served as Commander of Air Force Global Strike Command. Concurrently\, he served as the Commander of Air Forces Strategic-Air\, United States Strategic Command with a focus on strategy and operational excellence.  Previously\, he served as the Deputy Commander\, U.S. European Command where he was the Deputy Commander for all U.S. Joint Forces in Europe. He was responsible for joint\, combined operations\, planning and exercises to ensure U.S. and coalition military readiness and regional stability all during Russian efforts to destabilize Europe\, North Africa\, and the Middle East. \nGeneral Ray holds a Master of Science degree in Aviation Sciences and Management from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida and a Master of Science degree in Strategic Studies from Air War College. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Factors Engineering from the U.S. Air Force Academy and is a Distinguished graduate of the Air Command and Staff College. \nAmbassador Gordon Sondland is a BENS member and a member of BENS’ Ambassador’s Council. In 2018\, he was appointed to serve as the 20th U.S. Ambassador to the European Union by President Donald Trump and was unanimously confirmed by the United States Senate in June 2018. He served as the U.S. Ambassador to the EU until February 2020. In this role\, he was one of the highest-ranking U.S. officials in Europe and his portfolio included trade\, energy\, national security\, defense\, agriculture\, and several other files. \nAmbassador Sondland’s community service includes positions on Oregon Governor Kulongoski’s transition team\, as well as service on the Commission for White House Fellowships to which he was appointed by President George W. Bush. He was elected as its Chairman in 2009 and he served until 2011. Ambassador Sondland was appointed by Governor Kulongoski as Chairman to the Governor’s Office of Film and Television in 2002. As one of the longest serving members and Chairs\, Ambassador Sondland helped to preside over the growth of Oregon’s film and television industry. Ambassador Sondland has also served as a member of the U.S. Bancorp Advisory Board and on the Board of Visitors of the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University. \nAmbassador Sondland is an early adopter of the lifestyle hotel concept\, and started his career in hospitality when he formed Provenance\, opening its first – Hotel Lucia – in downtown Portland\, Oregon in 2001. He is an active investor in multiple industries\, and an avid art collector. \nAnja Wehler-Schöck (Moderator) is the International Editor of the Berlin daily Der Tagesspiegel and member of its Editorial Board. In 2022\, she founded the paper’s international affairs desk\, which she subsequently headed until the end of 2024. Prior to that\, she worked as the Editor-in-Chief of the IPG Journal\, a debate platform for issues of international and European politics. She previously worked as a social affairs officer at the German Embassy in Washington and headed the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung’s office for Jordan and Iraq in Amman from 2012 to 2017. \nMs. Wehler-Schöck is a frequent commentator on international affairs\, European politics\, transatlantic relations\, and security policy. Since 1991\, he has worked for Der Tagesspiegel\, where his prior positions have included Washington Bureau Chief and White House Correspondent (2005‐2013)\, as well as Editorial Page Editor (1995‐2005). In 1989\, he joined the Süddeutsche Zeitung and covered the regime changes in Hungary\, Romania\, and Bulgaria. \nFrom 2017 to 2018\, Dr. von Marschall was the inaugural Helmut Schmidt Fellow of the Zeit Foundation and the German Marshall Fund of the United States\, based in Washington\, DC. Informed through his access to the White House as a member of the Press Corps during Donald Trump’s first term\, he wrote a book about the future of Germany’s foreign policy: Wir Verstehen die Welt Nicht Mehr. Deutschlands Entfremdung von Seinen Freunden (“We Don’t Understand the World Anymore. Germany’s Estrangement from Its Friends”). Dr. von Marschall was awarded an ACG Kellen Fellowship in 1999. In the same year\, he was appointed as Professor of English Linguistics at Justus Liebig University Giessen. Professor Dr. Mukherjee’s research focuses on computer-based corpus linguistics\, applied linguistics\, English syntax\, and variety research. She is also a principal investigator in the Research Training Group “World Politics” and the Center for Advanced Latin-American Studies (CALAS) and has previously held leadership positions in several interdisciplinary research initiatives at Bielefeld University. \nAfter studying in Spain and Germany\, Prof. Dr. Epple received her doctorate in 2001 at Bielefeld University and later completed her habilitation at the University of Hamburg in 2008. Her academic career has included appointments at the Universities of Hamburg\, Freiburg\, and Bielefeld\, Guadalajara (Mexico)\, and Bologna (Italy)\, as well as research fellowships at the German Historical Institutes in London and Washington\, D.C. \nProf. Dr. Ingeborg Schramm-Wölk has served as the President of Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences (HSBI) since September 2015\, the Chair of Campus OWL (the association of the five state universities in Ostwestfalen-Lippe) since 2020\, and Vice President for Transfer and Sustainability of the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK) since 2025. She started her career in higher education as a Professor of Computer Science and Multimedia at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences and later became the Founding Dean (2009-2014) and later Dean (2014-2015) of the Faculty of Communication and Environment at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences. In addition to her university leadership roles\, Prof. Dr. Schramm-Wölk serves on numerous academic and research boards and is actively engaged in shaping higher education and research policy in Germany. \nProf. Dr. Schramm-Wölk studied Biology at the Free University of Berlin and the University of Tübingen before earning a degree in Medical Informatics from the Technical University of Applied Sciences Berlin in 1999. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Join the American Council on Germany and the Friends of Freiburg Alumni North America for a hybrid event with Prof. Dr. Masahisa Deguchi (Faculty of Law\, Ritsumeikan University\, Kyoto\, Japan) and alumnus of the University of Freiburg\, who founded The Institute for Justice Systems in Comparative Law (IJSCL) at the Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto. \nPlease note that lunch will be served in-person from 12-12:30 p.m.\, and the hybrid discussion will begin promptly at 12:30 p.m. \n\nProf. Dr. Masahisa Deguchi  is a Japanese legal scholar specializing in procedural law and comparative legal studies. He is currently based in Kyoto\, Japan\, where he serves as Special Professor at the Faculty of Law at Ritsumeikan University. \nProf. Dr. Deguchi earned his Bachelor of Laws from Chuo University in 1983 and pursued further studies at the University of Freiburg in Germany the same year. He later completed a Master of Laws at Keio University in 1988 and received his Doctor of Laws from the University of Freiburg in 1991\, supported by a DAAD scholarship. \nProf. Dr. Deguchi’s  academic career began at the University of Freiburg\, where he worked as an assistant at the Faculty of Law from 1989 to 1991. He subsequently joined Ritsumeikan University\, becoming Associate Professor in 1991 and later Professor at the Ritsumeikan Law School in 2006. Over the years\, he has held numerous leadership roles\, including Vice Dean of the Faculty of Law\, Director of the Center for Global Education and Research\, and Vice Dean of the Graduate School of Law. He also served as Vice President of the International Association of Procedural Law and held visiting appointments at Harvard Law School and the University of Washington. \nProf. Dr. Deguchi has received several prestigious honors\, including the JaDe Prize\, a Federal Cross of Merit of Germany\, and multiple Humboldt Foundation fellowships.
