SUMMARY:Chapel Hill\, North Carolina: New Forms of Matter with Ultracold Atoms: Superfuilds and Supersolids
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The ACG and Heidelberg University Association will host a Heidelberg Lecture with Nobel Laureate Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Ketterrle.  \nRSVP by November 6 by clicking here.\nRegistration is required. Seating is limited. Reception to follow. \nWhy do physicists freeze matter to extremely low temperatures? Why is it worthwhile to cool to temperatures which are a billion times lower than that of interstellar space? In his talk\, Prof. Ketterle will discuss new forms of matter\, which only exist at extremely low temperatures. Of special interest are superfluids which can flow without dissipation. Recently\, he and his team have observed a supersolid which is gaseous\, liquid and solid at the same time. \n\nWolfgang Ketterle has been the John D. MacArthur professor of physics at MIT since 1998. He leads a research group exploring new forms of matter of ultracold atoms\, in particular novel aspects of superfluidity\, coherence\, and correlations in many-body systems. His observation of Bose-Einstein condensation in a gas in 1995 and the first realization of an atom laser in 1997 were recognized with the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2001 (together with E.A. Cornell and C.E. Wieman). He began his studies at Heidelberg University\, received a diploma (equivalent to master’s degree) from the Technical University of Munich (1982) and the Ph.D. in physics from the University of Munich (1986). He did postdoctoral work at the Max-Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in Garching and at the University of Heidelberg in molecular spectroscopy and combustion diagnostics. In 1990\, he came to MIT as a postdoc and joined the physics faculty in 1993. Since 2006\, he is the director of the Center of Ultracold Atoms\, an NSF funded research center\, and Associate Director of the Research Laboratory of Electronics. His major accomplishments are the development of important tools to manipulate and study Bose-Einstein condensates\, and several seminal studies of the properties of Bose-Einstein condensates and quantum degenerate Fermi gases. \nWolfgang Ketterle is a fellow of the American Physical Society\, the Optical Society of America\, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences\, the Institute of Physics\, a member of the German physical society\, the European Academy of Sciences and Arts\, the Academy of Sciences in Heidelberg\, the European Academy of Arts\, Sciences\, and Humanities\, the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina\, a foreign associate of the National Academy of Sciences\, an honorary member of the Deutsche Hochschulverband and a foreign member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. His awards include the Rabi Prize of the American Physical Society\, the Gustav-Hertz Prize of the German physical society\, the Dannie-Heineman Prize of the Academy of Sciences\, Göttingen\, Germany\, the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Physics\, the Nobel Prize in Physics\, the Medal of Merit of the State of Baden-Württemberg\, the Knight Commander’s Cross (Badge and Star) of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany\, the MIT Killian Award and a Humboldt research award. He holds several Honorary Degrees and an Honorary Professorship. \n\nHeidelberg Lectures is a project within the Year of German-American Friendship 2018/2019. Also known as Deutschlandjahr USA\, this comprehensive and collaborative initiative is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office\, implemented by the Goethe-Institut\, and supported by the Federation of German Industries (BDI). \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:San Diego: Nutritional Effects of Infections Early in Life with Consequences Several Decades Later
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The ACG and Heidelberg University Association will host a discussion and reception with Nobel Laureate Prof. Dr. Harald zur Hausen.  \nRSVP by December 6 by clicking here.\nRegistration is required. Seating is limited. Reception to follow. \nPresently\, close to 20 percent of the global incidence of human cancers have been linked to predominantly viral infections. The identification of the high-risk human papillomavirus types 16 and 18 and the establishment of their causal role in cervical cancer paved the way for the development of specific preventive vaccines.\nEpidemiological patterns also point to the possible role additional infections may play in the etiology of other common human cancers. Prof. zur Hausen identified infectious nutritional factors originating from the consumption of Eurasian cattle meat and dairy cattle products\, and our results have shown that these infections occur mainly in the first year of life after weaning.\nThe available data allows for the development of a coherent concept for the pathogenesis of colon cancer as an example of indirect carcinogenesis by specific triggers resulting in random mutations. This concept is potentially applicable to breast cancer and several other human malignancies of unknown etiology. \n\nHeidelberg Lectures is a project within the Year of German-American Friendship 2018/2019. Also known as the Deutschlandjahr USA. www.wunderbartogether.org[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:NYC: Democracy Under Pressure: Cleavages and Contestations
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The ACG\, in partnership with the Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences and the Germany Academy\, will host a discussion and reception on Democracy Under Pressure: Cleavages and Contestations.  \nProcesses of cultural\, social and economic diversification are omnipresent in a closely connected world. While often peaceful\, these processes also bring to the scene contestation and conflicts between groups over the distribution of economic resources and cultural influence: global realignments caused by migration\, supra-national decision-making\, and international economic interdependencies have added to citizens’ perceptions that their countries and societies are tightly coupled with other parts of the world and\, as a consequence\, are coming more and more “under stress”. People fear that their group or society might no longer be able to live as before or become one of the globalization losers. They perceive current global realignments as a threat to their individual identities\, mores\, economic prosperity\, and political self-determination.\nOn both sides of the Atlantic\, (too) rapid social change and growing social complexity may overwhelm indi-viduals who – nevertheless – attempt to deal with it via various mechanisms. One of the coping mechanisms can be seen in the formation and support of political and/or social movements that represent their interests. The America-First doctrine\, Brexit\, and the rise of right-wing (populist) parties in Europe might only be a harbinger of the new challenges which the Western democratic systems of representation\, conflict resolution and regulation will have to face in the years to come. Additionally\, new forms of mediatization and datafication are rising play-ers in the social and political arena\, armed with the power to transform the perception of social and political ‘truth/s’ – making it/them more contestable than ever and thus contributing to the complexity at hand.\nTo grasp the phenomenon at hand in its full complexity\, an interplay of social science and bordering discipli-nary perspectives (i.e. from law\, anthropology\, and media studies) are necessary. A transatlantic interdisciplinary research network (TIRN) and a joint doctoral program would provide the platform to explore these perspectives and to merge them in one comprehensive research program. The research aim of TIRN is then to investigate the (new) drivers\, fields and forms of social and political re-formation which characterize Europe and the US in the 21st century\, and to critically reflect the disciplines’ own role in past and present processes. The workshop on December 11-12\, 2018\, is dedicated to finding both the essentials for a common research program and also the academic and institutional partners to materialize our mission goal. \nRegistration for the event is required to attend. Seating is limited.\nPlease RSVP by December 7\, 2018 by writing an e-mail to contestations@bigsss-bremen.de. \n  \n  \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Prof. zur Hausen identified infectious nutritional factors originating from the consumption of Eurasian cattle meat and dairy cattle products\, and our results have shown that these infections occur mainly in the first year of life after weaning. The available data allows for the development of a coherent concept for the pathogenesis of colon cancer as an example of indirect carcinogenesis by specific triggers resulting in random mutations. This concept is potentially applicable to breast cancer and several other human malignancies of unknown etiology. \nHeidelberg Lectures is a project within the Year of German-American Friendship 2018/2019. Also known as the Deutschlandjahr USA. www.wunderbartogether.org[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Berlin\, NYC\, and Washington\, DC: The Current State of German Politics: A Transatlantic Town Hall with American Policy and Media Experts in Berlin
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The American Council on Germany and the Robert Bosch Foundation Alumni Association will host a discussion with Brent Goff\, Chief News Anchor\, Deutsche Welle;  Julianne Smith\, Richard von Weizsäcker Fellow\, Bosch Academy in Berlin & Adjunct Senior Fellow\, Center for a New American Security; Sudha David-Wilp\, Deputy Director Berlin Office and Senior Transatlantic Fellow\, The German Marshall Fund of the United States.  \nRefreshments will be served and there will be no charge to attend. RSVP here by January 22nd. \nSince his election\, many transatlantic panel discussions have focused on Donald Trump – and how his election has transformed politics in the United States as well as his impact on transatlantic relations. Meanwhile\, the German political system has also been undergoing its own transformation. As Chancellor Merkel’s tenure winds down\, the traditional Volksparteien – the CDU/CSU and the SPD – have lost traction and parties like the AfD and the Greens have gained support. In Europe\, the Brexit and rising populism give cause for concern. How Germany handles these transitions will have a significant impact on the stability of its democratic system\, its leadership role on a range of global issues\, its positions vis-à-vis the European Union\, and the country’s relationship with the United States. This event will examine the current issues confronting the German political system by drawing on the expertise of four experts\, all of whom are Robert Bosch Foundation Fellowship alumni living in Berlin. \nSumi Somaskanda\, Reporter and Anchor\, Deutsche Welle. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
