SUMMARY:Local Communities and the Semiconductor Industry: Lessons across the Atlantic
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Columbus Warburg Chapter will host a discussion and reception with Members of the ACG’s German-American Semiconductors Cities Network. \nThe German-American Semiconductor Cities Network is a three-year project meant to help key stakeholders in German and American cities where semiconductor companies have made or will make significant investments connect with each other to share ideas and experiences and\, most importantly\, to identify specific strategies\, measures\, and best practices that can be implemented in their respective communities to address the social\, economic\, and structural impacts of semiconductor investments in their communities. Born and raised in Toledo\, Ohio\, he attended The Ohio State University\, earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Operations Management. He identified an early passion for economic development while at Ohio State as a participant in the Ohio Export Internship Program (OEIP)\, an Ohio Department of Development workforce initiative. Mr. Klosterman returned to the OEIP as a teaching assistant for three years concurrent with a two-year internship at JobsOhio\, the state’s private nonprofit economic development corporation. As an International Business Development Intern\, he coordinated travel and completed dozens of RFI’s for JobsOhio’s international consultants. Mr. Klosterman now works as an economic development specialist for the City of New Albany\, where Intel’s Ohio One site is currently under construction. His time is primarily spent maintaining the city’s active tax abatements and functioning as a liaison to development-related city boards. \nMike Schadek currently serves as the Director of Regional Partnerships for Columbus Mayor Andrew J. Ginther. Mr. Schadek received his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame and his J.D. from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law.  He launched three successful businesses in Southern California and Ohio and has maintained a law practice for the past 25 years. Elected to Upper Arlington City Council in 2011\, he joined Mayor Ginther’s team in 2016 and serves as the Chief Liaison between Columbus and all suburban Mayors\, Managers and City Council members. Mr. Schadek is the Immediate Past Board Chair of Greater Columbus Sister Cities International and helps manage international relationships on behalf of the City of Columbus. \nAlmar Walter is a trusted public leader whose career reflects a deep commitment to student success\, civic engagement\, and global ambassadorship. As Vice President of Student Success at Columbus State Community College\, he shares the privilege of serving over 45\,000 students representing 130 countries. As a member of the President’s Executive Cabinet\, he oversees a portfolio that spans student life\, accessibility services\, military and veteran services\, student wellbeing\, student conduct\, and student engagement and belonging -all focused on ensuring that every student has access to resources and support. Before joining Columbus State\, Almar served as Director of Community Affairs for Mayor Andrew J. Ginther\, where he led citywide initiatives designed to strengthen civic trust and community partnerships. His work built bridges between government and residents\, advancing projects grounded in collaboration and equity. His ability to connect across systems and people has enabled him to represent Columbus on the global stage. He has participated in multiple international delegations\, helping to represent and strengthen the region’s global relationships. Most recently\, he was a Columbus team member for the German-American Semiconductor Network’s visit to Dresden\, Germany. Almar also traveled to Genoa\, Italy\, as a CIRCLE Fellow with Greater Columbus Sister Cities International\, promoting cultural collaboration and intercultural diplomacy. His international service extends beyond diplomacy\, he has led humanitarian trips to Haiti\, Nicaragua\, the Dominican Republic\, and Trinidad and Tobago\, contributing to disaster relief\, affordable housing\, and sanitation projects. \nPeter Coccia (moderator) is a native of Columbus\, OH. He received his Bachelor of Arts in modern languages\, with an emphasis on German language and culture from the University of Notre Dame\, and holds a Master of Arts from Vanderbilt University. After college graduation\, he lived in Germany\, during which time he travelled extensively throughout the country and Europe\, and studied at the University of Marburg\, where he participated in a summer program on Deutschland während der Weimarer Republik (Germany during the Weimar Republic.) After a short stint teaching high school German\, Mr. Coccia entered public service and began a long career in government finance administration for the State of Ohio\, which included nearly seventeen years as Finance Director for the Ohio Department of Administrative Services and three years as Chief Operating Officer for the Ohio Department of Development. Upon retirement\, he continued German studies at The Ohio State University and for several years taught German language to adults at the Ohio German Language School. He is currently a guest teacher of German at Columbus area high schools. \nSince 2012 Mr. Coccia has served on the board of Dresden Sister City\, Inc (DSCI).\, a local non-profit organization supporting the sister city relationship between Columbus and Dresden\, Germany\, and in 2024 began a two-year term as board president.  In early February of 2015 he was the official representative of DSCI and the City of Columbus for the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the destruction of Dresden at the end of World War II. He currently serves as Co-Director of the ACG Columbus Warburg Chapter.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:European Security and Transatlantic Relations in the Age of Trump
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]NYU’s Center for European and Mediterranean Studies\, the American Council on Germany\, and Deutsches Haus at NYU present a moderated discussion among Sophia Besch (Carnegie Endowment for International Peace)\, Hans Kundnani (UC Berkeley / London School of Economics)\, Tara Varma (Brookings)\, and Steven E. Sokol (American Council on Germany). \nThe election of Donald Trump to a second term in office has thrown the transatlantic relationship between the United States and the European Union (EU) into disarray. NATO seems at risk. American foreign policy has become transactional\, based overtly on power rather than cooperation. And new areas of policy—everything from trade to digital technology—have been brought into the sphere of geopolitics. What are the implications for European security\, given that Russia is still waging an aggressive war on Europe’s doorstep? How is the EU responding to the prospect of losing America’s security umbrella? Can it create strategic autonomy\, and delink its military from that of the United States? And how are rifts within Europe hindering or helping the EU as it charts a new path through an ever-changing security landscape?[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Sophia Besch is a senior fellow in the Europe Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Her area of expertise is European defense policy. Dr. Besch also teaches as an adjunct lecturer at Johns Hopkins SAIS. \nBefore joining Carnegie\, Sophia was a senior research fellow at the Centre for European Reform (CER) in London and Berlin\, where she led research on European armament policy\, the EU’s role in European defense\, transatlantic relations\, German defense policy\, and the security implications of Brexit. \nSophia has also worked with the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies and the Atlantic Council’s Europe Centre\, where she served as co-chair of the US-Germany Renewal Initiative. Earlier in her career\, Sophia was a Carlo Schmid fellow in NATO’s Policy Planning Unit and a researcher for the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. She is a member of the Atlantik Brücke Young Leaders program. \nSophia regularly comments on political and defense issues in print and broadcast media and has published opinion pieces in the Atlantic\, Foreign Affairs\, Foreign Policy\, Internationale Politik\, Politico\, Project Syndicate\, War on the Rocks\, and others. She has served as an expert witness for the UK House of Commons Defence Select Committee\, the German Bundestag EU Committee\, and the European Parliament Subcommittee for Security and Defence. \nShe holds a doctorate in European Studies from King’s College London\, and degrees in international relations and international security from Sciences Po Paris and the London School of Economics. \nHans Kundnani is a Visiting Professor in Practice at London School of Economics Europe Institute and a Lecturer at Boston University’s Center for the Study of Europe. He was formerly an Adjunct Professor at CEMS\, a visiting fellow at the Remarque Institute at New York University and an Open Society Foundations Ideas Workshop fellow. He was previously the director of the Europe programme at the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House) in London\, a senior Transatlantic fellow at the German Marshall Fund of the United States\, a Bosch Public Policy Fellow at the Transatlantic Academy in Washington\, D.C.\, and research director at the European Council on Foreign Relations. He is also an associate fellow at the Institute for German Studies at Birmingham University and teaches at the Collège d’Europe in Natolin\, Poland. \nHans is the author of three books: Eurowhiteness. Culture\, Empire and Race in the European Project (London: Hurst\, 2023); The Paradox of German Power (London/New York: Hurst/Oxford University Press\, 2014)\, which has been translated into German\, Italian\, Japanese\, Korean and Spanish; and Utopia or Auschwitz. Germany’s 1968 Generation and the Holocaust (London/New York: Hurst/Columbia University Press\, 2009). He studied German and philosophy at Oxford University and journalism at Columbia University in New York\, where he was a Fulbright Scholar. \nTara Varma is a visiting fellow in the Center of the United States and Europe at the Brookings Institution. Her research focus includes French and European foreign policy priorities. In particular\, she works on European strategic autonomy\, European defense and security priorities\, transatlantic relations\, and domestic developments in Europe. \nUntil December 2022\, she was a senior policy fellow and the head of the Paris office of the European Council on Foreign Relations\, where she followed French foreign policy and European and Asian security developments. In 2022\, she was part of the working group on the French European Council presidency\, set up by the French Foreign Ministry\, which led to the publication of a report entitled “A Europe for Today and Tomorrow: Sovereignty\, Solidarity\, Shared Identity.” The report included a number of recommendations on how to strengthen Europe’s strategic autonomy and how to bridge the gap between France’s ambitions for Europe and a form of “soft Euroskepticism” borne by a growing part of the French population. In November 2023\, Varma was awarded the honor of Knight of the National Order of Merit of France. \nVarma’s recent publications include “Beyond the NATO summit\, key questions remain for European security\,” “Alliance of Revisionists: A New Era for the Transatlantic Relationship” with Sophia Besch\, and “The China-Russia relationship and threats to vital US interests” with Patricia Kim\, Asli Aydintasbas\, and Angela Stent. She has been quoted in The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, Foreign Policy\, Le Monde\, and more\, appears regularly on France24\, and is a frequent guest on the Center for a New American Security’s “Brussels Sprouts” podcast. Varma has previously worked and lived in Shanghai\, London\, New Delhi\, and Paris. He has been a member of the German Bundestag since 2013 and currently serves on the Bundestag’s Committee on European Union Affairs. He is the Deputy Chairman of the German-American Parliamentary Friendship Group\, Chairman of the USA Discussion Group of the SPD parliamentary group in the Bundestag\, and a member of the Board of Atlantik-Brücke. Mr. Hakverdi was a John F. Kennedy Memorial Policy Fellow at Harvard University and a Distinguished Visitor at the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies at Johns Hopkins University. \nBefore being elected to the Bundestag\, Mr. Hakverdi was a member of the Parliament of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg from 2008 to 2013. After training as a radio and television technician and gaining several years of professional experience in her family’s medium-sized electrical craft business\, she completed advanced training to become a certified electrical engineer. From 1990 to 1994\, she worked in the development of system electronics for helicopters at Eurocopter. Ilse Aigner began her political career as a municipal councilor in Feldkirchen-Westerham and a district councilor in the Rosenheim district council. She took on leadership roles within the CSU at an early stage. In 1994\, she was elected to the Bavarian State Parliament for the first time\, serving one legislative term before becoming a member of the German Bundestag from 1998 to 2013. During this time\, she was actively involved in various commissions\, working groups\, and committees\, and took on numerous leadership roles. From 2008 to 2013\, Ilse Aigner served as Federal Minister of Food\, Agriculture and Consumer Protection. Since 2013\, she has again been a member of the Bavarian State Parliament. For five years\, Ilse Aigner held the position of Deputy Minister President and Bavarian State Minister for Economic Affairs and Media\, Energy and Technology\, before heading the Bavarian Ministry of Housing\, Building and Transport as State Minister for six months starting in March 2018. Since October 2018\, Ilse Aigner has been President of the Bavarian State Parliament\, making her the highest representative of the Bavarian Parliament. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Late last week the German Parliament (Bundestag) postponed a vote that would have decided on the empanelment of three new justices at the country’s powerful Federal Constitutional Court (Bundesverfassungsgericht). The delay – likely lasting the duration of the government’s summer holiday – was triggered when members of the Union Parties signaled their late-emerging opposition to University of Potsdam Professor Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf\, who had been nominated to the Court by the SPD. Brosius-Gersdorf’s chances looked imperiled because the Union-SPD coalition would have to vote together – and count on support from other parties – to secure the two-thirds majority needed to confirm a justice at the Constitutional Court. These judicial machinations matter for the traditions of collegiality\, consensus\, and neutrality that have long legitimized the work of the Constitutional Court. But they also have political ramifications because they suggest a lack of unity\, compromise\, and commitment in Chancellor Fredrich Merz’s freshly-minted governing coalition. What caused this judicial appointments crisis? He frequently is invited as speaker and panelist at conferences in the USA\, Canada\, Latin America as well as in Europe. Most recently\, he was the spokesperson of the Study Committee on Afghanistan (2022-2025). Peter held the position as Coordinator of Transatlantic Cooperation of the Federal Government (2018-2022). He studied law in Germany and in the USA and is admitted to the bar since 2000. He began his legal career in the US-headquartered firm of Mayer\, Brown. He was directly elected in his constituency in the general elections in 2009\, 2013\, 2017\, 2021 and 2025. A committed Atlanticist for many years\, Beyer stands out among Members of the German Bundestag and his party as one of the most committed advocates of a strong relationship with the United States and Canada. Beyer has been the Foreign Affairs Committee’s main rapporteur on transatlantic relations\, the Western Balkans and Latin America. He was appointed as an individual expert of the European Commission with regard to clusters and also supported the report on the EU Chips Act by the Committee of Regions\, being appointed by the rapporteur from Saxony\, Thomas Schmidt.
