Please register through Eventbrite. \nCaren Marks has been the Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs\, Senior Citizens\, Women and Youth since December 2013 and member of the German Bundestag since 2002. In this role\, she focuses on social policy such as promoting work-life balance\, expanding childcare\, providing inclusive education\, strengthening civic engagement\, and achieving gender equality.  From 2008 to 2013\, she served as the Spokesperson of the Working Group on Family Affairs\, Seniors\, Women and Youth of the Social Democrats (SPD) in the German Bundestag. Since December 2005\, she has been a member of the SPD’s Executive Board. \nHaving joined the Social Democrats in 1998\, Ms. Marks has served in various roles including Chair of the SPD group in Wedemark\, member of the SPD Executive Committee in Hannover\, Member of the Hannover Regional Assembly\, and member of the City Council of Wedemark. She completed studies at the Universität Hannover in 1998 and later worked as a research assistant at the University. \n\nPolitical Salon: Promoting Dialogue Across Generations. This series brings together a diverse group of younger and mid-career professionals for informal\, open discussions on a range of current political\, economic\, and social topics in an increasingly interconnected global environment – with an emphasis on issues of concern for the transatlantic agenda. Prior to working at Brookings\, she was a senior transatlantic fellow with the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF)\, where she directed the influential Transatlantic Trends survey program. Her areas of expertise include: transatlantic relations; German foreign policy; NATO; the European Union’s foreign\, security\, and defense policy; international law; and human rights. Stelzenmüller is the former director of GMF’s Berlin office. From 1994 to 2005\, she was an editor for the political section of the German weekly DIE ZEIT\, where she had also served as defense and international security editor and covered human rights issues and humanitarian crises. From 1988 to 1989\, she was a visiting researcher at Harvard Law School. She has also been a GMF campus fellow at Grinnell College in Iowa\, a Woodrow Wilson Center public policy scholar in Washington\, D.C.\, and a member of the Remarque Forum—a conference series of the Remarque Institute at New York University. Stelzenmüller’s essays and articles\, in both German and English\, have appeared in a wide range of publications\, including Foreign Affairs\, Internationale Politik\, the Financial Times\, the International New York Times and Süddeutsche Zeitung. Her dissertation\, “Direkte Demokratie in den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika\,” was published in 1994 by Nomos. She is also a frequent commentator on American and European radio and television\, including Presseclub (ARD)\, National Public Radio\, and the BBC. Stelzenmüller is a governor of the Ditchley Foundation and a fellow of the Royal Swedish Society for War Sciences. She has worked in Germany and the United States\, and speaks English\, French\, German\, and Spanish. Stelzenmüller holds a doctorate in law from the University of Bonn (1992)\, a master’s degree in public administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University (1988)\, and a law degree from the University of Bonn (1985). \n \n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Dallas Warburg Chapter of the American Council on Germany will host a discussion and luncheon with Dr. Christian Martin\, Professor of European and Mediterranean Studies and Max Weber Visiting Chair in German and European Studies at New York University; Julianne Schäuble\, U.S. Correspondent for Der Tagesspiegel; and Dr. Steven E. Sokol\, President of the American Council on Germany. \nDr. Christian Martin is a professor of political science at the University of Kiel\, Germany. He currently holds the Max Weber Chair in German and European Studies at New York University. Dr. Martin has studied political science at the University of Konstanz and holds a doctorate from there (2002). Dr. Martin was a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Konstanz and at the Max-Planck-Institute in Jena (2003–2004). He was an assistant professor at the University of Hamburg (2004–2008) and a Visiting Assistant Professor at Northwestern University (2008–2011). Dr. Martin’s research interests focus on the political conditions and consequences of globalization and regional integration. He has published\, inter alia\, on the effects of globalization for electoral participation and on the incentive to adopt more proportional voting systems in a highly globalized environment. His current research project is on backlashes against globalization and EU integration\, including the electoral success of the far right AfD and the demise of social democracy \nJuliane Schäuble has been reporting for the Berlin-based daily newspaper Der Tagesspiegel from Washington\, D.C. since June 2018. Before her current position\, she most recently headed the political department\, where she was responsible for the front page and the political section. She has more than 10 years of experience in the business and political department. Ms. Schäuble has developed and continues to organize political conferences on a regular basis in cooperation with the Freie Universität Berlin and the Schwarzkopf-Stiftung. She earned her Master’s degree in Political Science at the University of Potsdam\, Germany. Her studies included one semester at American University in Washington\, DC\, where she took classes in American foreign policy and worked part time for the American Council of Young Political Leaders. In 2009 and 2010\, she was trained in the Media Manager Program of the publishing house Georg von Holtzbrinck. In 2006\, she was a Fellow of the Johanna Quandt Foundation for economic journalists. Ms. Schäuble has taken part in numerous leadership programs\, including the Manfred Wörner Seminar of the German Marshall Fund and the Armed Forces Office of the German Defense Ministry; Atlantik-Brücke’s German-American Young Leaders Conference; the Collaborative Leadership Program of Leadership Berlin – Netzwerk Verantwortung; and the Young Leaders Conference of the Council for the United States and Italy. \nDr. Steven E. Sokol became President of the American Council on Germany on May 1\, 2015. He served as President and CEO of the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh from July 2010 until April 2015. Prior to that\, he was the Vice President and Director of Programs at the American Council on Germany for nearly eight years. Dr. Sokol has more than 20 years of experience working with nonprofit organizations in Europe and the United States – and has spent over a decade working at nonpartisan membership-based organizations focusing on a range of domestic and foreign policy issues. He holds a Doctorate in Law and Policy from Northeastern University as well as an M.A. in International Relations and International Economics from the Johns Hopkins University’s Paul Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and a B.A. from Wesleyan University. Mr. Annen is also a member of the SPD’s Executive Committee and acts as the Chairperson of the SPD’s Commission for International Politics. His main foci of interest are transatlantic relations\, the Middle East\, and Russia\, as well as China and Latin America. From 2014 to 2018\, Mr. Annen also chaired the Bundestag’s Parliamentarian Friendship Group for Relations with the States of South Asia. As an advocate for a stronger German role in international diplomacy\, he supports multilateral engagement as a tool for resolving today’s conflicts and crises\, and protecting human rights. He was a senior resident fellow with the German Marshall Fund in Washington\, DC (2010 to 2011)\, and a researcher at the International Policy Analysis unit of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (2011 to 2013). From 2009 to 2012 he was Federal Minister for Environment\, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety. Additionally\, he held the position of Deputy Chair of the CDU in Germany as well as Chair of the CDU in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia from 2010 to 2012. From 2005 to 2009 he served as Chief Parliamentary Secretary of the CDU/CSU congressional party. Prior to this position\, he was the Legal Policy Spokesman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group. Preceding his first term in parliament\, Dr. Röttgen studied law in Bonn from 1984 to 1993 and subsequently worked in the regional court. He attained his doctoral degree in 2001. Prior to his current roles\, he served as Managing Chairman of the Heiligenhaus town branch of the CDU and a member of the Heiligenhaus town council from 2008 to 2009. In addition\, he was an elected member of the Executive Committee of the Mettmann county branch of the CDU. Before joining the public sector\, he worked as an attorney specializing in industrial property law in the Cologne office of Mayer Brown LLP\, the Los Angeles office of Murchison & Cumming LLP\, and the Chicago office of Brinks\, Hofer\, Gilson & Lione LLP. As a foreign policy analyst\, his research focuses on European integration and the EU’s role in the world\, German foreign policy\, transatlantic relations\, and security and defense issues. He is co-author of Führungsmacht Deutschland – Strategie ohne Angst und Anmaßung (2017) and a regular contributor to German and international news media. Before joining GMF\, he was the director of the Richard C. Holbrooke Forum for the Study of Diplomacy and Governance at the American Academy in Berlin. From March 2011 to August 2016\, Mr. Techau was the director of Carnegie Europe in Brussels. He also served in the NATO Defense College’s Research Division in Rome from February 2010 until February 2011. He was director of the Alfred von Oppenheim Center for European Policy Studies at the German Council on Foreign Relations in Berlin between 2006 and 2010\, and from 2001 to 2006 he served at the German Ministry of Defense’s Press and Information Department. He holds an MA in political science from the Christian-Albrechts-Universität in Kiel\, Germany. He is an associate scholar at the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA) and an associate fellow at the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies (AICGS) in Washington\, DC. Before\, he served as his paper’s Bureau Chief in Washington DC (2007-2014) and as DIE ZEIT’s Senior Political Editor and Managing Editor of the political section in Hamburg (1998-2007). Mr. Klingst studied law in Freiburg\, Geneva and Hamburg and worked at the Institute of International Affairs at the University of Hamburg. There he also taught German Constitutional Law. In 2006\, he was a fellow at the Center for European Studies at Harvard University\, where he lectured on the German reform process\, on the Transatlantic relations\, terrorism\, and Europe’s engagement in the Middle East. Before assuming his position with DIE ZEIT in 1996\, Mr. Klingst worked as a journalist for the North German Public Broadcasting Corporation NDR and the weekly paper Deutsches Allgemeines Sonntagsblatt. He wrote on domestic topics as well as on international affairs. He covered the Balkan wars\, the Israel-Palestine conflict\, the transatlantic relationsship\, and\, since 2015\, the refugee crisis. In 2012 Mr. Klingst was honored with the George F. Kennan editorial award and in 2016 with the German Reporter Award. In September Reclam published his book “Menschenrechte” (human rights) and in September 2018 “Trumps Amerika. Reise in ein weißes Land” (“Trump’s America. A journey to a white man’s land”).
