In Baden-Württemberg\, she was Minister for Cultural Affairs\, Youth\, and Sport from 1995 till 2005. From 2005 to 2014\, she was a Member of the German Federal Parliament. From 2005 to 2013 she served in the cabinet of Angela Merkel as Federal Minister for Education and Research. She was German Ambassador at the Holy See / Vatican from 2014 to June of 2018. She studied Philosophy and Catholic Theology at the universities in Bonn and Düsseldorf. Today she lives in Ulm\, Baden Württemberg.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Under the leadership of Jürgen Rüttgers\, former Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia\, Minister-President Laschet served as the State Minister for Generations\, the Family\, Women\, and Integration from 2005 until 2010\, and as State Minister for Federal Affairs\, Europe\, and Media as of 2010. He was a member of the European Parliament from 1999 to 2005 and a member of the German Bundestag from 1994 to 1998. Please register through Eventbrite. \nCaren Marks has been the Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs\, Senior Citizens\, Women and Youth since December 2013 and member of the German Bundestag since 2002. In this role\, she focuses on social policy such as promoting work-life balance\, expanding childcare\, providing inclusive education\, strengthening civic engagement\, and achieving gender equality.  From 2008 to 2013\, she served as the Spokesperson of the Working Group on Family Affairs\, Seniors\, Women and Youth of the Social Democrats (SPD) in the German Bundestag. Since December 2005\, she has been a member of the SPD’s Executive Board. \nHaving joined the Social Democrats in 1998\, Ms. Marks has served in various roles including Chair of the SPD group in Wedemark\, member of the SPD Executive Committee in Hannover\, Member of the Hannover Regional Assembly\, and member of the City Council of Wedemark. She completed studies at the Universität Hannover in 1998 and later worked as a research assistant at the University. \n\nPolitical Salon: Promoting Dialogue Across Generations. This series brings together a diverse group of younger and mid-career professionals for informal\, open discussions on a range of current political\, economic\, and social topics in an increasingly interconnected global environment – with an emphasis on issues of concern for the transatlantic agenda. Prior to working at Brookings\, she was a senior transatlantic fellow with the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF)\, where she directed the influential Transatlantic Trends survey program. Her areas of expertise include: transatlantic relations; German foreign policy; NATO; the European Union’s foreign\, security\, and defense policy; international law; and human rights. Stelzenmüller is the former director of GMF’s Berlin office. From 1994 to 2005\, she was an editor for the political section of the German weekly DIE ZEIT\, where she had also served as defense and international security editor and covered human rights issues and humanitarian crises. From 1988 to 1989\, she was a visiting researcher at Harvard Law School. She has also been a GMF campus fellow at Grinnell College in Iowa\, a Woodrow Wilson Center public policy scholar in Washington\, D.C.\, and a member of the Remarque Forum—a conference series of the Remarque Institute at New York University. Stelzenmüller’s essays and articles\, in both German and English\, have appeared in a wide range of publications\, including Foreign Affairs\, Internationale Politik\, the Financial Times\, the International New York Times and Süddeutsche Zeitung. Her dissertation\, “Direkte Demokratie in den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika\,” was published in 1994 by Nomos. She is also a frequent commentator on American and European radio and television\, including Presseclub (ARD)\, National Public Radio\, and the BBC. Stelzenmüller is a governor of the Ditchley Foundation and a fellow of the Royal Swedish Society for War Sciences. She has worked in Germany and the United States\, and speaks English\, French\, German\, and Spanish. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Dallas Warburg Chapter of the American Council on Germany will host a discussion and luncheon with Dr. Christian Martin\, Professor of European and Mediterranean Studies and Max Weber Visiting Chair in German and European Studies at New York University; Julianne Schäuble\, U.S. Correspondent for Der Tagesspiegel; and Dr. Steven E. Sokol\, President of the American Council on Germany. \nDr. Christian Martin is a professor of political science at the University of Kiel\, Germany. He currently holds the Max Weber Chair in German and European Studies at New York University. Dr. Martin has studied political science at the University of Konstanz and holds a doctorate from there (2002). Dr. Martin was a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Konstanz and at the Max-Planck-Institute in Jena (2003–2004). He was an assistant professor at the University of Hamburg (2004–2008) and a Visiting Assistant Professor at Northwestern University (2008–2011). Dr. Martin’s research interests focus on the political conditions and consequences of globalization and regional integration. He has published\, inter alia\, on the effects of globalization for electoral participation and on the incentive to adopt more proportional voting systems in a highly globalized environment. His current research project is on backlashes against globalization and EU integration\, including the electoral success of the far right AfD and the demise of social democracy \nJuliane Schäuble has been reporting for the Berlin-based daily newspaper Der Tagesspiegel from Washington\, D.C. since June 2018. Before her current position\, she most recently headed the political department\, where she was responsible for the front page and the political section. She has more than 10 years of experience in the business and political department. Ms. Schäuble has developed and continues to organize political conferences on a regular basis in cooperation with the Freie Universität Berlin and the Schwarzkopf-Stiftung. She earned her Master’s degree in Political Science at the University of Potsdam\, Germany. Her studies included one semester at American University in Washington\, DC\, where she took classes in American foreign policy and worked part time for the American Council of Young Political Leaders. In 2009 and 2010\, she was trained in the Media Manager Program of the publishing house Georg von Holtzbrinck. In 2006\, she was a Fellow of the Johanna Quandt Foundation for economic journalists. Ms. Schäuble has taken part in numerous leadership programs\, including the Manfred Wörner Seminar of the German Marshall Fund and the Armed Forces Office of the German Defense Ministry; Atlantik-Brücke’s German-American Young Leaders Conference; the Collaborative Leadership Program of Leadership Berlin – Netzwerk Verantwortung; and the Young Leaders Conference of the Council for the United States and Italy. \nDr. Steven E. Sokol became President of the American Council on Germany on May 1\, 2015. He served as President and CEO of the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh from July 2010 until April 2015. Prior to that\, he was the Vice President and Director of Programs at the American Council on Germany for nearly eight years. Dr. Sokol has more than 20 years of experience working with nonprofit organizations in Europe and the United States – and has spent over a decade working at nonpartisan membership-based organizations focusing on a range of domestic and foreign policy issues. He holds a Doctorate in Law and Policy from Northeastern University as well as an M.A. in International Relations and International Economics from the Johns Hopkins University’s Paul Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and a B.A. from Wesleyan University. Having received a 1999 Trailblazer Award and the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Research Creativity in 2007\, Dr. Mushaben is a three-time Alexander von Humboldt Fellow\, a former Ford Foundation Fellow\, German Marshall Fund grantee\, and DAAD recipient. She has held guest-scholar posts at the Academy for Social Sciences (GDR)\, the Center for Youth Research (GDR)\, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences\, and the Center for Transdisciplinary Gender Research. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The ACG and the CUNY Graduate Center will host a discussion and reception with Niels Annen\, Minister of State of the German Federal Foreign Office.  \nThere is no charge for this event. RSVPs are required. RSVP (acceptances only) to the American Council on Germany at 212-826-3636 or events@acgusa.org. \nNiels Annen was appointed Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office on March 14\, 2018. Prior to this position\, he served several years as Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) Parliamentary Group in the German Bundestag. Mr. Annen is also a member of the SPD’s Executive Committee and acts as the Chairperson of the SPD’s Commission for International Politics. His main foci of interest are transatlantic relations\, the Middle East\, and Russia\, as well as China and Latin America. From 2014 to 2018\, Mr. Annen also chaired the Bundestag’s Parliamentarian Friendship Group for Relations with the States of South Asia. As an advocate for a stronger German role in international diplomacy\, he supports multilateral engagement as a tool for resolving today’s conflicts and crises\, and protecting human rights. He was a senior resident fellow with the German Marshall Fund in Washington\, DC (2010 to 2011)\, and a researcher at the International Policy Analysis unit of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (2011 to 2013). He holds several honorary offices\, such as member of the Executive Board of the German Council on Foreign Relations and member of the Council of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP).[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Since 2014\, he has been the chairman of the Bundestag’s Committee on Foreign Affairs. He became a member of parliament in 1994. From 2009 to 2012 he was Federal Minister for Environment\, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety. Additionally\, he held the position of Deputy Chair of the CDU in Germany as well as Chair of the CDU in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia from 2010 to 2012. From 2005 to 2009 he served as Chief Parliamentary Secretary of the CDU/CSU congressional party. Prior to this position\, he was the Legal Policy Spokesman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group. Preceding his first term in parliament\, Dr. Röttgen studied law in Bonn from 1984 to 1993 and subsequently worked in the regional court. He attained his doctoral degree in 2001. He is a member of the Board of Atlantik-Brücke.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

RSVP here by April 29. \nHelga Margarete Barth is Minister and Head of Political Affairs at the German Embassy in Washington DC. Prior to coming to Washington DC in August 2015\, she served as Head of the Middle Eastern and Asian Affairs Division\, on Chancellor Merkel’s foreign policy team (2010-2015). Her previous postings with the Federal Foreign Office include two years as the Ministry’s Research Coordinator on the Policy Planning Staff (2008-2010)\, a posting as Political Counselor in Ankara\, Turkey (2005-2008)\, and two years at the Division for Turkish Affairs (2003-2005). She has also served as Deputy Consul General in Guangzhou (Canton)\, China\, and as a political desk officer at the German Embassy in Tokyo. She first came to the United States to attend a summer program at the University of Delaware and later spent a year at Cornell University’s Asia Department. Ms. Barth holds a Master’s Degree in Chinese Studies (Sinology)\, Modern History\, and German Literature from Tubingen University\, Germany. She also attended the universities of Erlangen and Bonn as well as Shandong University at Jinan\, China (1983-1985).[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
