The pipeline has been a controversial subject for years\, but in the face of Russian aggression against Ukraine it is being used as leverage to try to get Russia to back down. However\, the current moment is part of a longer narrative… \nJoin 1014 and the American Council on Germany for a discussion that will put the pipeline project and Germany’s energy dependency in a broader context. We will be joined by Sascha Müller-Kraenner\, the Executive Director of Deutsche Umwelthilfe e.V. (Environmental Action Germany)\, an independent non-profit organization that was founded in 1975 and is focused on environmental and consumer protection. Before assuming his current role\, he held various positions with The Nature Conservancy between 2007 and 2014\, and earlier in his career he worked for the Heinrich-Böll Foundation. While the new government was taking form\, tensions were building with Russia over Ukraine. By the end of February\, there was a full-scale war on Europe’s doorstep. Chancellor Scholz responded by holding a historic speech at a special session of the Bundestag where he outlined a new blueprint for German foreign and security policy. He reported on the end of the GDR\, the transition in the eastern states of Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania\, the move of the federal government to Berlin. Later he covered German domestic and foreign policy – except when he was correspondent in London from 2007 to 2012. \nDr. Anna Sauerbrey is the Foreign Editor at the weekly DIE ZEIT. Previously\, she headed the opinion pages of Der Tagesspiegel and Tagesspiegel Causa\, the paper’s online magazine. \nShe studied History\, Political Science\, and Journalism in Mainz and Bordeaux. From 2005 to 2009\, she was a research assistant in the History Department at the University of Mainz. She worked as an intern at the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and ZDF\, among others\, and as a freelancer for the Mainzer Rhein-Zeitung for several years. In 2009\, Dr. Sauerbrey completed a traineeship at Der Tagesspiegel and became a staff member of its opinion/editorial department. In 2013\, she was an Arthur F. His reporting in Japan — from the hardest-hit areas near the failing Fukushima nuclear power plant following the earthquake and tsunami — was included in the publication 100 Great Stories\, celebrating the centennial of Columbia University’s Journalism School. In 2012\, he exposed the fabrications in Mike Daisey’s account of Apple’s supply chain on This American Life. His report was featured in the show’s “Retraction” episode. In 2011\, New York’s Rubin Museum of Art screened a documentary Schmitz shot in Tibetan regions of China about one of the last living Tibetans who had memorized “Gesar of Ling\,” an epic poem that tells of Tibet’s ancient past. \nFrom 2010 to 2016\, Mr. Schmitz was the China correspondent for American Public Media’s Marketplace. He’s also worked as a reporter for NPR Member stations KQED\, KPCC\, and MPR. SUMMARY:What’s at Stake When Saarland Goes to the Polls?

The first election is in Saarland on March 27 – followed by elections in Schleswig-Holstein and North-Rhine Westphalia in May and Lower Saxony in October. While the Social Democrats (SPD) are looking to consolidate their power at the state level (and in the upper house\, Bundesrat)\, the conservative Christian Democrats (CDU) will have four opportunities to try to win back support after major losses at the federal level. \nThe situation in each state is different – but these elections are likely to serve as both a referendum on the leadership of Chancellor Olaf Scholz and his Ampelkoalition and a litmus test for the new leader of the CDU\, Friedrich Merz. Saarland is a small state on the border of France and Luxembourg\, but it carries symbolic importance: The CDU has governed the state since 1999 but it is trailing the SPD in polls by nearly ten percent in some polls. Berlin quickly imposed sanctions on Russia in conjunction with its EU partners and the United States. It also took bilateral steps such as freezing the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. Further measures remain on the table as Germany seeks to reduce its dependency on imports of Russian gas\, oil\, and coal and accelerate its transition to renewable energy sources. Chancellor Olaf Scholz and his coalition government have pledged to establish a €100 billion defense fund and stated that German defense spending will rise to at least 2 percent of GDP (up from 1.53 percent in 2021\, according to NATO data). \nGerman actions to implement these commitments will play a crucial role in the Western response to Moscow’s aggression\, strengthening NATO’s defense and helping meet the threat Russia poses to European security. While President Macron pushes for a more sovereign Europe and sees the European Union as the best vehicle to defend French national interests at the global level\, Ms. Le Pen promotes a radically nationalist vision of sovereignty that includes leaving NATO and challenging EU treaties in order to regain independence. The results of the French presidential election will define the course of French—and European—politics for the next few years. \nThe race is a repeat of the 2017 election\, in which Macron decisively defeated Le Pen with 66 percent of the vote. Ms. Cademartori is the only member of parliament with Hispanic heritage\, and she serves on the Committee on Housing\, Urban Development\, Building\, and Local Government\, as well as the Committee on Transport. She is also a deputy member of the Committee on Health. Ms. Cademartori has also been a member of the Mannheim City Council since 2019. \nPrior to her rise in electoral politics\, she studied Business and Economics Education at the University of Mannheim\, earning her master’s degree in 2014. Born in Brandenburg to a German mother and a Chilean father who immigrated to East Germany as a political refugee\, Ms. Cademartori’s biography is one of the more unusual among her colleagues in the Bundestag. Her grandfather\, Jose Cademartori\, was the Minister of Economics in Salvador Allende’s government and was forced to flee Chile after Pinochet’s military putsch. The cyber dimension of the “hot war” in Ukraine is an important reminder of the need to defend cyberspace. He has written for numerous publications on both sides of the Atlantic including Foreign Affairs\, Foreign Policy\, Politico\, The Atlantic\, The National Interest\, and Der Spiegel. \nMr. Barker was a Fulbright scholar in Austria and a Truman National Security Project Fellow. He was a recipient of the Taiwan Cultural Exchange Fellowship and received a grant from the Starr Foundation to conduct research on Sino-European relations. Mr. Barker holds a bachelor’s degree from Columbia University and a master’s degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). In addition to his native English\, he speaks fluent German and Spanish. \nHeli Tiirmaa-Klaar has been the Director of the Digital Society Institute at the European School of Management and Technology in Berlin since January 2022. From 2018 to 2021\, she served as Ambassador for Cyber Diplomacy and Director General for the Cyber Diplomacy Department at the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs\, where she led the efforts to promote international law and cyber norms during the Estonian tenure at the United Nations Security Council. From 2012 to 2018\, she was working as a Head of Cyber Policy Coordination at the European External Action Service where she coordinated EU external relations on cyber issues and co-led preparations of European Cyber Security Strategies since 2012. She set up EU strategic level cyber dialogues with the US\, India\, Brazil\, Japan\, South Korea\, China as well as other international organizations. She also kicked off EU global cyber capacity building programs and steered the development of the EU Cyber Diplomacy Toolbox to bolster European response to malicious cyber activities. In 2011\, she was assigned to the NATO International Staff to prepare the NATO Cyber Defense Policy. \nShe has been working on cyber and tech policies since 2007 when she led the development of the first whole-of-government Estonian Cyber Security Strategy. From 2008 to 2010\, she coordinated the implementation of the strategy\, managed the National Cyber Security Council\, and led the establishment of national cyber resilience structures as well as public-private partnerships. She has held various managerial and academic positions at the Estonian Ministry of Defense and the Tallinn University since 1995. She also holds a Master’s Degree from King’s College in London\, where she focused on security studies and south Asia. \nJulia Leeb is a photojournalist and filmmaker. The emphasis of her work is on regions in political upheaval. She has done long-term projects in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)\, Egypt\, Syria\, Libya\, Afghanistan\, and Sudan. Her report on women living under the rule of a warlord in the jungle of the DRC was nominated for the Peter Scholl-Latour award. \nMs. Leeb studied International Relations and Diplomacy in Madrid. After graduation\, she worked for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Italy in Rome. In order to deepen her knowledge of the Middle East\, she moved to Egypt to study Arabic and conduct at the Institute for Peace Studies. \nMs. Leeb returned to Germany where she graduated from the media academy BAF in Munich. Since then she has worked as a war reporter focusing on the revolutions and wars in the Arab world. Later she extended her geographical reach and published the book “North Korea: Anonymous Country“ which was featured on National Public Radio\, The Wall Street Journal\, and other renowned international publications.
