In this capacity\, she is responsible for the foundation’s work in Jordan and Iraq. FES Amman focuses on promoting democracy and social justice with activities covering a broad spectrum\, ranging from parliamentary consultations to youth projects and a special line of work dedicated to political Islam and extremism. Ms. Wehler-Schoeck joined FES in 2005 and has held various positions at the Berlin headquarters of the organization. Before relocating to Jordan in 2012\, she served as Desk Officer for the United States\, Canada\, and Japan. Prior to joining FES\, her assignments led her to Tunisia\, Jordan\, and the United States. She is the author of a number of German and English publications on the Middle East and is a regular contributor to various media with her analyses on Jordan\, Iraq\, political Islam\, and security policy. Until 2014\, he was Professor for Russian and European Studies at the Warsaw campus of the College of Europe. Prior to that\, he was a Research Associate and head of the research section on Russia\, Eastern Europe\, and the Caucasus at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs in Berlin. His academic degrees include\, in Germany\, an M.A. in Political Science from the Freie Universität in Berlin and\, in the United States\, an M.A. degree in International Relations\, a Certificate in Russian Studies\, and a Ph.D. with distinction\, all from Columbia University in New York City. In the past\, he also held teaching and/or research positions at institutions in several countries\, including the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London\, the Royal Military College of Canada\, and the Rand Corporation in Santa Monica\, California. From 1989 to 1997\, he was Professor of International Politics and Director of the Program on Russia and East-Central Europe at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplo­macy in Boston as well as a Fellow at the Harvard Russian Research Center. He has written many arti­cles in academic journals and books\, including Imperial Overstretch: Germany in Soviet Policy from Stalin to Gorbachev: An Analysis Based on New Archival Evidence\, Memoirs\, and Interviews. Born and raised in the Federal Republic of Germany\, Mr. Ramelow moved to Thuringia after unification in 1990 and has since been a politically active resident. He acted as a trade union official (1990-1999)\, when he was Chairman of Handel\, Banken und Versicherungen (HBV)\, then a member of the Thuringian Parliament (1999-2005)\, and leader of The Left in Thuringia (2009-2014). Mr. Buhrow holds a Master’s degree in History and Political Science from the University of Bonn. In 1978\, he worked at the local newspaper Bonner General-Anzeiger. In 1985\, he volunteered at the largest television station in North Rhine-Westphalia\, WDR. Since 1986\, he was the Reporter\, Editor\, and Bureau Chief of the shows “Aktuelle Stunde” and “West 3 Aktuell.” After that\, he worked as a Reporter and Editor for Germany’s leading newsmagazine\, “Tagesschau.” In the run-up to the 1992 Presidential Election\, Mr. Buhrow became the ARD correspondent in Washington\, DC. Between January 2000 and 2002\, Mr. Buhrow worked as a correspondent at the ARD bureau in Paris. In July 2002\, he took over from Claus Kleber as chief of the ARD bureau in Washington. In September 2006\, he replaced Ulrich Wickert as the host of ARD’s flagship newsmagazine\, “Tagesthemen.” Also in 2006\, Mr. Buhrow published a book with Sabine Stamer about his years in the United States titled Mein Amerika\, Dein Amerika (My America\, Your America). \nJörg Schönenborn has been Television Director of WDR and Coordinator of Television Film at ARD since May 2014. Mr. Schönenborn studied Journalism and Politics. From 1997 to 2002\, he headed the WDR TV Current Affairs editorial group. From 2002 to 2014\, he was WDR Television Editor-in-Chief and Director of the Politics and Current Affairs program group. Under his direction\, a series of successful formats were developed\, including “hart aber fair\,” “Markencheck\,” “Wahlarena\,” and “Sport inside” on WDR Television. Mr. Schönenborn regularly presented election broadcasts on the 1st channel and the “ARD Presseclub.” For his reporting on the arson attack in Solingen\, he was recognized in 1993 and 1994 with the Telestar Prize and the Axel Springer Prize for Television Journalism. His work focuses on sustainable development in the energy and transportation sector\, as well as urban sustainability and resilient cities. In particular\, he is leading the efforts by Ecologic Institute in the Emerging Leaders in Environmental and Energy Policy Network (ELEEP). He is also coordinating Post-Carbon Cities of Tomorrow (POCACITO) in the U.S. and Germany and the European research project Post-Carbon Cities in Europe: A Long-Term Outlook. In 2004\, Mr. Gruenig received his degree in Economics from the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. The main focus of his studies was natural resource economics and auction theory. Mr. Gruenig has lived and worked in Germany\, the United States\, Iceland\, and Japan. He is a founding member of the European Institute for Sustainable Transport (EURIST)\, a member of the Sustainability Advisory Board for NaturEnergiePlus\, and a member of the Consumer Research Network run by the German Federal Ministry for Justice and Consumer Protection (BMJV). DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The ACG and Cultural Vistas will host a Political Salon with Souad Mekhennet\, Washington Post Correspondent and Author of I Was Told to Come Alone: My Journey Behind the Lines of Jihad. \nWednesday\, June 14\, 2017\n6:00 p.m. Happy Hour\n6:30 – 8:00 p.m. Discussion \nYou must register through Eventbrite in order to attend. \nSouad Mekhennet\, a reporter who has been covering the Middle East\, North Africa\, and radical Islamic movements since shortly after September 11\, is a correspondent for The Washington Post’s national security desk. She has also reported on terrorism for The New York Times\, The International Herald Tribune\, and NPR\, and she is the co-author of The Eternal Nazi\, Children of Jihad\, and Islam. She was one of two reporters who broke the story of Khaled el Masri’s rendition case and worked on a series called “Inside the Jihad\,” where she and her colleagues interviewed members of radical jihadist organizations all over the world. Ms. Mekhennet was a 2012 Nieman Fellow at Harvard University\, and she has been a visiting fellow at the Weatherhead Center for International Policy at Harvard\, the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS)\, and the Geneva Center for Security Policy. The daughter of a Turkish mother\, and a Moroccan father\, she was born and educated in Germany. She is an alumna of the ACG’s Young Leaders Study Group on the Future of Europe: Demographic Trends\, Migration\, and Social Cohesion.  \npolitical salon: promoting dialogue across generations. This series brings together a diverse group of younger and mid-career professionals for informal\, open discussions on a range of current political\, economic\, and social topics in an increasingly interconnected global environment – with an emphasis on issues of concern for the transatlantic agenda.
