General Ray is a highly decorated\, retired United States Air Force Four-Star General who most recently served as Commander of Air Force Global Strike Command. Concurrently\, he served as the Commander of Air Forces Strategic-Air\, United States Strategic Command with a focus on strategy and operational excellence.  Previously\, he served as the Deputy Commander\, U.S. European Command where he was the Deputy Commander for all U.S. Joint Forces in Europe. He was responsible for joint\, combined operations\, planning and exercises to ensure U.S. and coalition military readiness and regional stability all during Russian efforts to destabilize Europe\, North Africa\, and the Middle East. \nGeneral Ray holds a Master of Science degree in Aviation Sciences and Management from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida and a Master of Science degree in Strategic Studies from Air War College. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Factors Engineering from the U.S. Air Force Academy and is a Distinguished graduate of the Air Command and Staff College. \nAmbassador Gordon Sondland is a BENS member and a member of BENS’ Ambassador’s Council. In 2018\, he was appointed to serve as the 20th U.S. Ambassador to the European Union by President Donald Trump and was unanimously confirmed by the United States Senate in June 2018. He served as the U.S. Ambassador to the EU until February 2020. In this role\, he was one of the highest-ranking U.S. officials in Europe and his portfolio included trade\, energy\, national security\, defense\, agriculture\, and several other files. \nAmbassador Sondland’s community service includes positions on Oregon Governor Kulongoski’s transition team\, as well as service on the Commission for White House Fellowships to which he was appointed by President George W. Bush. He was elected as its Chairman in 2009 and he served until 2011. Ambassador Sondland was appointed by Governor Kulongoski as Chairman to the Governor’s Office of Film and Television in 2002. As one of the longest serving members and Chairs\, Ambassador Sondland helped to preside over the growth of Oregon’s film and television industry. Ambassador Sondland has also served as a member of the U.S. Bancorp Advisory Board and on the Board of Visitors of the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University. \nAmbassador Sondland is an early adopter of the lifestyle hotel concept\, and started his career in hospitality when he formed Provenance\, opening its first – Hotel Lucia – in downtown Portland\, Oregon in 2001. He is an active investor in multiple industries\, and an avid art collector. \nAnja Wehler-Schöck (Moderator) is the International Editor of the Berlin daily Der Tagesspiegel and member of its Editorial Board. In 2022\, she founded the paper’s international affairs desk\, which she subsequently headed until the end of 2024. Prior to that\, she worked as the Editor-in-Chief of the IPG Journal\, a debate platform for issues of international and European politics. She previously worked as a social affairs officer at the German Embassy in Washington and headed the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung’s office for Jordan and Iraq in Amman from 2012 to 2017. \nMs. Wehler-Schöck is a frequent commentator on international affairs\, European politics\, transatlantic relations\, and security policy. From 2005 to 2007\, she served as Adjunct Lecturer at the Free University of Berlin\, Germany. Prior to this\, he held a number of roles in the German Federal Foreign Office for over two decades\, including most recently as the Commissioner for Crisis Management\, heading the Crisis Task Force of the Federal Government. He previously served as Head of the Crisis Response Center\, Head of the Refugee and Migration Task Force\, Deputy Director for the Division for Policy Issues in European Affairs\, advisor at the office of the State Secretary and at the International Law section of the Legal Department. His postings abroad include Islamabad (Pakistan) and Damascus (Syria)\, both times as Minister Counsellor. \n\nDr. Jokisch studied Law in Passau and Toulouse after completing military service from 1989-1992\, including training as a reserve officer. Since 1991\, he has been working for Der Tagesspiegel\, where his prior positions have included Washington Bureau Chief and White House Correspondent (2005‐2013) as well as Editorial Page Editor (1995‐2005). In 1989\, he joined the Süddeutsche Zeitung and covered the regime changes in Hungary\, Romania\, and Bulgaria. \nFrom 2017 to 2018\, Dr. von Marschall was the inaugural Helmut Schmidt Fellow of the Zeit Foundation and the German Marshall Fund of the United States\, based in Washington\, DC. Informed through his access to the White House as a member of the Press Corps during Donald Trump’s first term\, he wrote a book about the future of Germany’s foreign policy: Wir Verstehen die Welt Nicht Mehr. Deutschlands Entfremdung von Seinen Freunden (“We Don’t Understand the World Anymore. Germany’s Estrangement from Its Friends”). Dr. von Marschall was awarded an ACG Kellen Fellowship in 1999. Kranen\, Head of the Finance Section at the German Embassy in Washington\, who will share his impressions of the joint Federal Reserve/ECB conference at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. \n\nDirk H. Kranen has more than 25 years of responsible management experience in the public and international sectors as well as profound insights into German European policy and European integration issues.\nAfter completing his studies in Cologne\, the graduate economist held numerous important positions during his career\, including personal advisor to the German Finance Minister Theo Waigel\, speechwriter and economic advisor to the German Federal President Horst Köhler\, as well as Senior Advisor to the International Monetary Fund for many years and financial advisor to the international organisations in Geneva. During the German G8 presidency\, he organised a high-level G8 meeting on the subject of remittances. During his time at the Federal Ministry of Finance\, he was actively involved in shaping parliamentary oversight of the European Stability Mechanism\, among other things. Before moving to Washington\, D.C. in August 2024 as Head of the Finance Division in the German Embassy\, Dirk H. Kranen was Head of Division in the European Department of the Federal Ministry of Finance. The conversation will address both the immediate health risks posed by heat and the broader societal challenge of strengthening resilience in a changing climate. \n\n\n\nA truly hot topic: With rising temperatures and more frequent heat waves\, the health impacts of heat are becoming increasingly urgent. Yet temperatures do not need to reach extreme levels to pose serious risks. They can trigger heart attacks and strokes and contribute to a growing burden of heat-related mortality that is likely to intensify with climate change and population aging. The effects are felt not only at the level of public health but also in everyday medical care\, where a prescription that is safe in the winter may become dangerous during a hot summer. \nHow dangerous is heat really\, even when temperatures do not appear extreme? How do rising temperatures affect healthcare systems\, patients\, and vulnerable populations? What forms of prevention\, patient education\, and community support are needed to reduce heat-related health risks? Her institute aligns research\, teaching\, and patient care with a focus on planetary health in primary care. She received the 2023 University Prize for Sustainability from the University of Cologne. Dr. Müller serves as member of the Standing Committee on Vaccination (STIKO) and of the Drug Commission of the German Medical Profession (AkdÄ). She is also Co-Editor of The Journal of Evidence and Quality in Health Care (ZEFQ). \nDr. Kai Chen is an Associate Professor at the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at the Yale School of Public Health. He also serves as the Faculty Director of the Yale Center on Climate Change and Health and the President-Elect of the GeoHealth Section at the American Geophysical Union. Dr. Chen received his Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Engineering in 2016 from Nanjing University in China and the Alexander von Humboldt Postdoc Fellowship at Helmholtz Zentrum München-German Center for Environmental Health in Germany. He is the 2025 Kavli Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences. He is also the Editor of the GeoHealth journal and Associate Editor of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC).[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
