Mr. Leithäuser joined the political section of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in 1988 and moved to Berlin in the summer of 1990. He reported on the end of the GDR\, the transition in the eastern states of Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania\, and the move of the federal government to Berlin. SUMMARY:Iran–Russian Relations and the War in Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Russia\, Iran\, and Turkey have a complex relationship that has been shaped by shared interests and by conflict. Earlier this week\, the leaders of the three regional powers met in Tehran in an effort to bolster relations between their countries. The summit took place a few weeks after a series of western summits (including NATO and the G7)\, shortly after Russian gas giant Gazprom announced a new cooperation agreement with Iran\, and just days after U.S. President Joe Biden traveled to the region. \nJoin the ACG on July 26 at 11:00 am ET\, for an assessment of the meeting in Tehran and the impact of the war in Ukraine on Russia’s relations with Iran and Turkey. He is a Fellow at the American University of Beirut’s Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs (AUB-IFI)\, where he publishes a brief entitled “Iran in Focus” (previously published as “Iran 1400 Brief“). He is the author of the much-acclaimed book Iran in an Emerging New World Order: From Ahmadinejad to Rouhani (2021). \nDr. Fathollah-Nejad also served as an Iran expert at the Brookings Institution in Doha (2017–20) and the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) (2015–18). He holds a Ph.D. in International Relations from the Department of Development Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London (SOAS) and was the winner of the 2016/17 post-doctoral fellowship of the Harvard Kennedy School’s Iran Project. As an ACG McCloy Fellow in Global Trends\, he will conduct research on a transatlantic foreign policy towards authoritarian states.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The post-Cold War era saw the Russian Federation and the United States work together on bilateral and global issues\, a spirit of cooperation. That has evolved into the unprovoked Russian invasion of Ukraine\, the extensive support of Kyiv by the United States and its allies\, the expansion of NATO in reaction to Russian aggression\, and a disruption in global stability and international norms. \nIs the war in Ukraine a new “Cold War” or is it something else? His most recent book is Henry Kissinger and American Power: A Political Biography (Hill and Wang\, 2020). The book has received considerable notice and acclaim. Harvard University’s Charles Maier has written: “Thomas Schwartz’s superbly researched political biography reveals the brilliance\, self-serving ego\, and vulnerability of America’s most remarkable diplomat in the twentieth century\, even as it provides a history of U.S. engagement in global politics as it moved beyond bipolarity.” Earlier in his career\, Schwartz was the author of America’s Germany: John J. McCloy and the Federal Republic of Germany (Harvard\, 1991)\, which was translated into German\, Die Atlantik Brücke (Ullstein\, 1992). This book received the Stuart Bernath Book Prize of the Society of American Foreign Relations\, and the Harry S. Truman Book Award\, given by the Truman Presidential Library. He is also the author of Lyndon Johnson and Europe: In the Shadow of Vietnam (Harvard\, 2003)\, which examined the Johnson Administration’s policy toward Europe and assessed the impact of the war in Vietnam on its other foreign policy objectives. He is the co-editor with Matthias Schulz of The Strained Alliance: U.S.-European Relations from Nixon to Carter (Cambridge University Press\, 2009). \nProfessor Schwartz has held fellowships from the Social Science Research Council\, the German Historical Society\, the Norwegian Nobel Institute\, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars\, and the Center for the Study of European Integration. He has served as President of the Society of Historians of American Foreign Relations. He served on the United States Department of State’s Historical Advisory Committee as the representative of the Organization of American Historians from 2005-2008. Professor Schwartz received The Madison Sarratt Prize for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching on April 3\, 2013\, at the Spring Faculty Assembly\, Vanderbilt University. In 2008 Professor Schwartz received the Annual Alumni Education Award from the Vanderbilt Alumni Association. Schwartz is the recipient of the 2008 Book Award by Chi Chapter of the Kappa Alpha Order. This award is given to a faculty member who has been particularly influential in the lives and education of members of KAO. Professor Schwartz presented\, “The Arab Spring: Revolution in the Middle East\,” on April 19\, 2011\, as part of the Samuel L. Shannon Distinguished Lecture Series at Tennessee State University. But\, heating is just one of many aspects impacting Europe’s energy market. More broadly\, EU member states are struggling to rein in soaring gas prices – which are wreaking havoc across the Continent. Last week\, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called for a European intervention to control gas prices in the run-up to a meeting of Europe’s energy ministers in Brussels on Friday\, September 9. Cooley’s opinion pieces have appeared in New York Times\, Foreign Policy\, and Foreign Affairs and his research has been supported by fellowships and grants from the Open Society Foundations\, Carnegie Corporation\, and the German Marshall Fund of the United States\, among others. Cooley earned both his MA and Ph.D. from Columbia University. \nGwendolyn Sasse has been the Director of ZOiS since October 2016. Since April 2021\, she has been Einstein Professor for the Comparative Study of Democracy and Authoritarianism at the Department of Social Sciences of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Before joining DGAP\, she worked as an adviser for a member of the Bundestag on disarmament\, arms control\, and non-proliferation\, as well as German and European foreign and security policy. Between 2003 and 2010\, she was a researcher and lecturer to the chair of political science and contemporary history as well as in the program for North American studies at the University of Bonn. In the summer of 2010\, she held a lectureship at the Chemnitz University of Technology. \nAfter her Abitur in Siegen in 1997\, she spent a year in Paris – where she completed the Cours de civilization française de la Sorbonne. She then studied political science\, public law\, and sociology at the University of Bonn from 1998 to 2003\, as well as at Venice International University for a semester in 2002. In studying for her doctorate at the University of Bonn\, she focused on the life and thought of political scientist John Herz and conducted research in the United States. \nDr. Puglierin was an associate at Stiftung Neue Verantwortung in Berlin from October 2010 to October 2011. In November 2017\, she was a visiting fellow at the American-German Situation Room\, a joint initiative of the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies and the German Marshall Fund. The retreat from Kherson is one of the most serious blows to Russia in Putin’s war. She has published several books on Russia\, including Putin’s World: The New Russia\, Ukraine\, and the West. \nAndrew S. Weiss (ACG Young Leader) is the James Family Chair and vice president for studies at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace\, where he oversees research on Russia and Eurasia. His graphic novel biography of Vladimir Putin\, Accidental Czar: the Life and Lies of Vladimir Putin\, will be published by First Second/Macmillan in November 2022. \nPrior to joining Carnegie\, he was director of the RAND Corporation’s Center for Russia and Eurasia and executive director of the RAND Business Leaders Forum. Mr. Weiss’s career has spanned both the public and private sectors. Until December 2018\, Ms. Pagung worked as a Program Officer for the Robert Bosch Center for Central and Eastern Europe\, Russia\, and Central Asia\, where she managed the discussion group on Russia and the Eastern Partnership as well as the joint project “A New Western Ostpolitik” with Johns Hopkins University. From 2013 to 2015\, she worked in the project team of the Carl Friedrich Goerdeler Kolleg. \nMs. Pagung is currently working on a doctorate on the impact of Russian propaganda and information policy on Germany at the Freie Universität Berlin\, where she studied political science. She is also an adjunct lecturer there and serves as a seminar facilitator for various formats relating to European foreign policy and Eastern Europe. SUMMARY:Food Security and the Economic Implications of the War in Ukraine

The conflict has exacerbated critical issues in many parts of the world – like food insecurity. During the war\, we have seen food prices increase as Ukraine (one of the world’s “bread baskets”) has come under attack. As Executive Director\, Ambassador Cousin guided the 14\,000-member WFP team feeding more than 80 million people each year; while she identified and championed longer-term\, more sustainable solutions for global food insecurity and hunger. \nIn 2009\, Ambassador Cousin was nominated and confirmed as the U.S. Ambassador to the UN Agencies for Food and Agriculture in Rome. Prior to her global hunger work\, she helped lead the U.S. domestic fight to end hunger including service as the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of America’s Second Harvest -now Feeding America. She is currently a member of the Bayer AG Supervisory Board\, the Mondelez International Board of Directors\, the Royal DSM Sustainability Board\, and a Trustee of the African agriculture thinktank Academia2063. \nShe is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Chicago\, the University of Georgia Law School\, and the University of Chicago Executive Management Program-Finance for Non-Financial Executives. She has been listed numerous times on the Forbes 100 Most Powerful Women List\, as the Fortune Most Powerful Woman in Food and Drink\, on Time’s 100 Most Influential People list\, and as one of the 500 Most Powerful People on the Planet by Foreign Policy magazine. \nAlexander Müller is the Founder and Managing Director of TMG – Think Tank for Sustainability in Berlin and Study Leader of “The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity for Agriculture and Food (TEEBAgriFood)” hosted by UN Environment. He is a Member of the German Council for Sustainability. \nPreviously he served as Assistant-Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) from 2006 to 2013\, as a member of the UN Advisory Group on Energy and Climate Change (AGECC)\, and as chair of the United Nations System Standing Committee on Nutrition (UNSCN). In Germany\, he served as State Secretary in the Federal Ministry for Consumer Protection\, Food\, and Agriculture\, from 2001 to 2005\, and as State Secretary in the Ministry of Youth\, Family Affairs\, and Health in the state of Hesse\, among others. \nMr. Müller received a diploma in sociology from Philipps University in Marburg.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
