SUMMARY:Virtual Event - Let's Talk Democracy: How to Explain America to Germans
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]In the next installment of the Let’s Talk Democracy series\, journalist and commentator Alexander Görlach will talk with Ines Pohl\, Chief Correspondent of Deutsche Welle in Washington\, D.C. about her experiences covering the news in the United States. She has traveled extensively throughout the country\, seeing firsthand the many different experiences of people living in the United States.[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Register Here” style=”classic” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fus06web.zoom.us%2Fwebinar%2Fregister%2FWN_k_KrYFV3Rm-Wd3-bHHnUNQ%3Fmc_cid%3D2dbd47d282%26mc_eid%3DUNIQID%23%2Fregistration” css=”.vc_custom_1773346004743{background-color: #1e73be !important;background-position: center !important;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;background-size: cover !important;}”][vc_column_text] \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInes Pohl has been based in the United States since 2020\, serving as the Bureau Chief of Deutsche Welle — with a focus on the pressures facing contemporary democracies. Her reporting examines why growing numbers of voters in established democratic systems are drawn to authoritarian leaders and what this shift reveals about deeper political\, social\, and cultural transformations. As Bureau Chief\, she oversees reporting from across the United States\, consistently placing people at the center of her storytelling. Ms. Pohl has covered the Trump presidency closely as a member of the White House Foreign Press pool\, while deliberately spending time reporting outside Washington in order to capture perspectives that are often absent from national political debates. \nMs. Pohl brings a distinctly German and European perspective to her reporting from the United States. Her work frequently reflects on how American political developments resonate beyond national borders and what lessons they may hold for Europe’s own democratic debates. Rather than treating U.S. politics as an isolated phenomenon\, she places it in a transatlantic context\, examining similarities\, differences\, and mutual blind spots. \nBefore returning to the United States\, Ms. Pohl spent six years as Editor‑in‑Chief of the German daily taz. She later covered the 2016 U.S. presidential election for Deutsche Welle before becoming DW’s Editor‑in‑Chief in Berlin and Bonn. During her three years in that role\, she worked closely with colleagues to sharpen the editorial profiles of Deutsche Welle’s 30 language services and to strengthen the organization’s social media strategy in response to a rapidly evolving media landscape. \nDr. Alexander Görlach is an Adjunct Professor to NYU Gallatin School where he teaches democratic theory. Prior to that he had various positions as visiting scholar and as fellow at Harvard University in the United States\, and Cambridge University and Oxford University in the United Kingdom. He is a Senior Fellow to the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs in New York and a Senior Advisor to the Berggruen Institute in Los Angeles. Dr. Görlach holds a ThD in Comparative Religion and a PhD in Linguistics. His academic interests include democratic theory\, politics and religion\, and theories of secularism\, pluralism and cosmopolitanism. In the academic year 2017-18\, he was a visiting scholar at National Taiwan University and City University Hongkong. Since then Dr. Görlach has had a special interest in the rise of China and what it means for the democracies in East Asia. \nDr. Görlach is an Honorary Professor of Ethics and Theology at Leuphana University in Lüneburg\, Germany. He is also the founder of the debate-magazine The European\, that he also ran as its Editor-in-Chief from 2009 to 2015. He is a contributor to the New York Times\, Neue Zürcher Zeitung\, and the South China Morning Post\, and a columnist for the business magazine Wirtschaftswoche\, Deutsche Welle\, and Focus Online. He is a frequent commentator on German television.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Virtual Event - Takeaways from Friedrich Merz's Trip to China
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s visit to China has reignited debate over Germany’s long-term strategy toward Beijing. SUMMARY:Virtual Event - The Evolving Situation in Iran: A View from Berlin
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]In recent months\, Iran has faced its most sustained wave of domestic protest in years\, as economic collapse and political frustration have driven thousands into the streets. Iranian security forces have responded with a harsh crackdown\, and the human toll continues to mount amid widespread reports of arrests and deadly force used against demonstrators. \nAt the same time\, rhetoric between Tehran and Washington\, D.C. has intensified. President Donald Trump has publicly urged Iranians to persist in protest and signaled that “help is on the way” for demonstrators\, while warning that Tehran must “show humanity” or risk U.S. action. Washington has also deployed significant naval assets to the region amid concerns over potential escalation. \nJoin us on February 20 at 11:00 am ET for a virtual discussion on the rapidly evolving situation in Iran\, featuring Dr. Cornelius Adebahr\, who brings a European perspective. The discussion will assess how Iranian leadership is navigating these internal pressures\, what the evolving U.S.–Iran dynamic means for Europe – especially Berlin and Brussels – and the implications for the transatlantic relationship\, from sanctions coordination to shared regional strategy.[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Register Here” style=”classic” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fus02web.zoom.us%2Fwebinar%2Fregister%2F9317712798732%2FWN_s3QN4OJLR9Oqs7mbiECLVA” css=”.vc_custom_1771279908667{background-color: #1e73be !important;background-position: center !important;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;background-size: cover !important;}”][vc_column_text]Dr. Cornelius Adebahr has been working as an independent consultant and analyst based in Berlin\, where he works on European and global issues and promotes citizen dialogue on foreign policy. SUMMARY:Virtual Event - Venezuela in 2026: What Do Recent Developments Mean for the Region and for Europe?
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Earlier this month\, the United States carried out a military operation in Venezuela that resulted in the capture of President Nicolás Maduro\, sending shockwaves through global politics and raising intense debate over sovereignty and international law. \nEurope has responded by reinforcing its longstanding restrictive measures — including travel bans and asset freezes on Venezuelan officials — aimed at pressuring Caracas to respect democracy and human rights\, while also increasing support for those affected by the deep socio-economic crisis. In recent years the Venezuela crisis had exacerbated migration flows\, making Venezuelans one of the largest groups seeking asylum in the EU\, which continues to strain EU migration and integration systems. European governments are also watching for broader geopolitical fallout\, as Latin American reactions vary and tensions with Russia and other powers complicate cooperation on energy and security issues. Overall\, developments in Venezuela could influence Europe’s foreign policy priorities\, balancing pressure for democratic reforms with energy market stability and multilateral engagement. \nJoin us for a discussion about the situation in Venezuela and the implications of recent developments for Europe with Latin America and foreign policy expert Irmgard Maria Fellner on Wednesday\, January 21 at 11 am ET.[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Register Here” style=”classic” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fus02web.zoom.us%2Fwebinar%2Fregister%2F2617689225324%2FWN_Aeuf9srFRyyN9eyaZgz1IQ” css=”.vc_custom_1768922572032{background-color: #1e73be !important;background-position: center !important;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;background-size: cover !important;}”][vc_column_text]Irmgard Maria Fellner currently serves as a Visiting Fellow at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik\, SWP)\, with a special focus on Latin America\, critical minerals\, and global affairs. Ms. Fellner studied Humanities and Political Science\, and worked for the European Affairs Committee of the French National Assembly before joining the German Foreign Service in 1993. Her previous postings include German Ambassador to Chile\, Director for Federal Foreign Cultural Policy\, Deputy Chief of Mission to Italy and San Marino\, Head of the Office of Transatlantic Coordinator Karsten D. Voigt. From 2007 to 2010\, she served as an Advisor to French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner. She also worked on European Foreign and Security Policy and Afghanistan and served in Brazil. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The recent release of the Trump administration’s National Security Strategy marks a significant moment in U.S. foreign and defense policy\, outlining how the administration views the global threat environment and America’s role within it. SUMMARY:Politics\, Power\, and Influence: How Money Shapes U.S. Politics
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]In the United States (and many countries)\, money has long played a central role in politics\, shaping who gets elected\, which policies are prioritized\, and whose voices are heard. From campaign contributions to corporate lobbying\, financial influence impacts the political system\, often determining outcomes before the public even has a chance to weigh in. \nJoin us on November 11 for a discussion on the impact of campaign finance\, lobbying\, and corporate contributions on politics. SUMMARY:Rethinking Germany's Approach to Russia
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]For decades\, the official German approach to Russia was defined by dialogue\, trade\, and the hope that economic interdependence would lead to political stability. In the wake of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine\, that assumption has been shattered — prompting a fundamental reckoning with the ideas and interests that shaped Germany’s Russia policy. \nIn their new book Das Versagen (“The Failure”)\, journalist Katja Gloger and co-author Georg Mascolo trace how political leaders\, intelligence agencies\, and business interests misunderstood the Kremlin’s intentions\, overlooking clear warning signs. Their investigative account opens a critical window into the inner workings of German decision-making and the lessons for Europe’s future security. Join us on November 5 for a discussion with Katja Gloger and Angela Stent to discuss what went wrong\, how policymakers in Berlin and Washington D.C. interpreted Russia’s trajectory\, and what a realistic long-term strategy toward Moscow might look like.[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Register Here” style=”classic” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fus02web.zoom.us%2Fwebinar%2Fregister%2F8917618327465%2FWN_Ana-x1Q0Rf-ej0_AtcmU8Q” css=”.vc_custom_1761832791245{background-color: #1e73be !important;background-position: center !important;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;background-size: cover !important;}”][vc_column_text]Journalist and author Katja Gloger studied Eastern European History and Political Science in Hamburg and Moscow and has an MBA from Purdue University\, Indiana. SUMMARY:The Importance of Social Cohesion and Democracy
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]While global challenges are addressed by national governments\, increasingly subnational actors such as states\, communities\, and cities have needed to step up to take action when traditional nation-states have not been able to make progress due to political polarization and partisan gridlock. In the next German-American State-to-State event\, legislators will discuss the future of social cohesion and democracy. \nOn both sides of the Atlantic\, social cohesion serves as the glue that holds democratic societies together. When people feel connected to one another and work toward shared goals\, democratic institutions gain resilience and legitimacy. In today’s climate of global uncertainty\, strengthening social cohesion is not just desirable\, it is essential to safeguarding democracy. Yet in recent years\, social cohesion has weakened under the pressure of ever-accelerating transformation of societies. Both the United States and Germany navigate a world marked by polycrises\, in which social divisions are deepening as political polarization and inequality grow. The result has been an unprecedented erosion of trust in democratic institutions and governance. In this context\, state and Länder governments in both countries play a pivotal role. Their proximity to local communities and better understanding of the issues they face\, equip subnational legislators with the means to effectively address the decline of social cohesion with policies reflecting local values and priorities. To build trust in democratic institutions\, subnational legislators have the responsibility to produce policies that nurture social ties and community engagements at the local level. \nJoin us for an insightful discussion on October 13 between German and U.S. state legislators to highlight the role of states\, cities\, and local governments in fostering social cohesion\, and promoting cross-border cooperation. The conversation will include Tom Brüntrup\, MdL (CDU) State Parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia\, Representative Lydia Glaize (D) Georgia House of Representatives\, and Simone Strohmayr (SPD) Bavarian State Parliament.[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Register Here” style=”classic” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fus02web.zoom.us%2Fwebinar%2Fregister%2F5317594233477%2FWN_rKCffM0qS8imx16BBMA2Rw” css=”.vc_custom_1759423405002{background-color: #1e73be !important;background-position: center !important;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;background-size: cover !important;}”][vc_column_text]Tom Brüntrup (CDU) was born in Bielefeld on May 11\, 1997 and grew up there with two older brothers. SUMMARY:Breaking Conventional Thinking: U.S. Import Dependence on Europe and Germany
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Against the backdrop of increasing tensions between Europe and the United States over tariffs and trade\, the German Economic Institute in Cologne published a report in late September that examines the dependence of the United States on imports from the EU and Germany. The report’s findings show that the U.S. dependence on imports from the EU is greater than often assumed – and that it has increased steadily over the past 15 years\, making the U.S. dependence on imports from the EU higher (both in total value and in the number of goods) than its dependence on imports from China. The report was commissioned by the German Federal Foreign Office (and published in German). It can be found here. \nJoin us for a discussion with one of the report’s co-authors\, Dr. Samina Sultan\, who serves as a Senior Economist for European Economic and Fiscal Policy at the German Economic Institute.[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Register Here” style=”classic” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fus02web.zoom.us%2Fwebinar%2Fregister%2F8417588128417%2FWN_kbFXZNiaSm6gMxq98zD3AA” css=”.vc_custom_1758813337722{background-color: #1e73be !important;background-position: center !important;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;background-size: cover !important;}”][vc_column_text]Dr. Samina Sultan is a Senior Economist for European Economic and Fiscal Policy at the German Economic Institute (IW). She studied Economics at the Universities of Mannheim\, St. Gallen\, and Tübingen\, and completed her PhD at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU) and at the University of California\, Berkeley. Her research interests include trade\, trade policy\, Europe\, fiscal and industrial policies\, and China.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
