Wess Mitchell took the oath of office as Assistant Secretary of State on October 12\, 2017. As Assistant Secretary\, he is responsible for diplomatic relations with 50 countries in Europe and Eurasia\, and with NATO\, the EU\, and the OSCE. Prior to joining the State Department\, Dr. Mitchell spent 12 years at the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA)\, a think tank dedicated to the study of Central Europe. A co‐founder of CEPA\, he served as President and CEO from 2009 to 2017 and Director of Research from 2006 to 2009. Dr. Mitchell played an instrumental role in CEPA’s growth to become a leading transatlantic think tank with offices in Washington\, DC\, and Warsaw\, Poland.\nFrom 2013 to 2016\, Dr. Mitchell  chaired the  Europe Working  Group for the John Hay Initiative.  He  also served on  advisory boards for several U.S. and European institutes\, including the Zbigniew Brzezinski Institute for Geostrategy\, the  Slovak  Atlantic  Commission\,  the  Prague  Center  for  Transatlantic  Relations\,  Atlantic  Initiative  Berlin\,  and  the  Alexander Hamilton Society.\nDr. Mitchell is the author of numerous articles and reports on transatlantic relations and international security. His work has been  translated into  10 languages and  appeared in  major  publications  such  as  the  Washington  Post\,  Washington Times\, International Herald Tribune\, American Interest\, National Interest\, Orbis\, and Internationale Politik. He is the coauthor of two books on geopolitics\, including most recently Unquiet Frontier: Vulnerable Allies\, Rising Rivals and the Crisis of American Power (with Jakub J. Grygiel).\nDr. Mitchell holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the Otto Suhr Institut für Politikwissenschaft at Freie Universität in Berlin; an M.A. from the Center for German and European Studies at Georgetown University’s Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service\, where he was awarded the 2004 Hopper Award; a certificate in EU Studies from the American Consortium on European Union Studies; and a B.A. in History from Texas Tech University. RSVP (acceptances only)\nto the American Council on Germany at 212-826-3636 or events@acgusa.org. \nDavid Gill (@germanyny) grew up in a rectory in Herrnhut in the eastern part of Saxony\, in the former German Democratic Republic. He was denied attendance and completion of a public school and subsequently studied at a public university on the basis of political reasons. After an apprenticeship to become a plumber\, he first underwent theological training and eventually attended a theological seminary of the Protestant Church in Berlin-Brandenburg. In 1990\, he initially was Chairman of Normannenstrasse Citizens’ Committee at the headquarters of the Ministry of State Security (Stasi) and then Head of Administration\, Parliamentary Special Committee for the dissolution of the GDR Ministry of State Security/Office of National Security. He was Spokesman and Head of Division of the Federal Commissioner for the Files of the State Security Service of the former GDR before studying law\, amongst others in Philadelphia. After holding positions with the Federal Ministry of the Interior and with the Office of the Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information in Berlin\, he was for eight years the Deputy Representative of the Council of the Protestant Church in Germany (EKD) to the Federal Republic of Germany and the European Union. During the term of Joachim Gauck\, President of Germany from 2012 to 2017\, he was State Secretary and Head of the Office of the Federal President. Since August 2017\, he is the German Consul General in New York. \n Çiğdem İpek is a Berliner of Turkish descent. She holds a degree in social sciences from the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and studied abroad at the New School for Social Research in New York City. Her areas of interest include migration\, integration\, and identity\, as well as education and employment policies. Her professional experience was shaped by a range of diverse employers: the Berlin Senate and the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin\, in addition to NGOs and freelance projects. Today\, she is a staff member of the Chancellery and serves as a desk officer at the Office of the Federal Government Commissioner for Migration\, Refugees\, and Integration. \n Dr. Christian Martin (@chwmartin) is a Professor of Political Science at the University of Kiel\, Germany. He currently holds the Max Weber Chair in German and European Studies at New York University. He has studied political science at the University of Konstanz and holds a doctorate from there (2002). Dr. Martin was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Konstanz and at the Max-Planck-Institute in Jena (2003-2004). He was an Assistant Professor at the University of Hamburg (2004-2008) and a Visiting Assistant Professor at Northwestern University (2008-2011). Dr. Martin’s research interests focus on the political conditions and consequences of globalization and regional integration. He has published on the effects of globalization for electoral participation and on the incentive to adopt more proportional voting systems in a highly globalized environment. His current research project is on backlashes against globalization and EU integration. Most recently\, Dr. Martin has written on voter turnout and the rise of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) as well as on the electoral fate of the German Social Democrats. \n [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Prior to his current position\, he served as the Federal Minister of Health in the third cabinet of Chancellor Angela Merkel\, and it was during this time (in 2014) that he became a member of the CDU Federal Executive Board. Mr. Gröhe has served in various other CDU/CSU roles\, including Secretary-General of the CDU (2009-2013); Legal Advisor of the CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group\, Spokesman of its fact-finding committee\, and member of its Committee on Foreign Affairs (2005-2008); as well as Chairman of the CDU Rhein-Kreis Neuss (2001-2009)\, Spokesman on Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid for the CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group (2005-2008)\, Spokesman of the “Young Group” in the CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group (1994-1998)\, and a member of the CDU Program Commission (1991-1993). Mr. Gröhe was also a member of the County Council Neuss (1991-1993 and 1984-1989)\, Chairman of the National Junge Union Germany (1989-1994)\, and County Chairman of the Junge Union Neuss (1983-1989). Mr. Gröhe is a licensed lawyer and earned his degree at the University of Cologne in 1987. He previously headed the public-policy representation of Deutsche Bank in Berlin and was the Managing Director of the Alfred Herrhausen Gesellschaft\, the International Forum of Deutsche Bank. Early in his career\, he served as Special Assistant for Europe to Federal Chancellor Helmut Schmidt. He was the Director General of the German Foreign Ministry and held senior staff positions with Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher – when he was deeply involved in negotiations on German unification – and with Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel\, when he worked toward a solution to the Balkan crisis. As Permanent Representative and Ambassador to the United Nations in New York\, he negotiated the first four UN resolutions on the Iranian nuclear issue\, which became the foundation for the so-called 3+3 Iranian nuclear deal\, accomplished in 2014. Ambassador Matussek sits on a number of Boards\, including the Deutsche Gesellschaft für die Vereinten Nationen (United Nations Association of Germany); Institute for Strategic Dialogue in London; Internationaler Wirtschaftssenat e.V. As the inaugural Helmut Schmidt Fellow of the German Marshall Fund of the United States and the ZEIT Foundation\, he researched and wrote his most recent book\, Wir Verstehen die Welt Nicht Mehr: Deutschlands Entfremdung von Seinen Freunden\, which was published last month. From 2005 to 2013\, he was Der Tagesspiegel’s U.S. Correspondent\, Washington Bureau Chief\, and White House Correspondent. Beginning when Barack Obama took office in 2009\, Dr. von Marschall was the only German newspaper correspondent in the White House Press Corps. From 1995 to 2005\, he served as the Editor of the Editorial Page. In addition to his role at Der Tagesspiegel\, Dr. von Marschall is a regular guest at ARD-Presseclub and a commentator at Deutschlandfunk and WDR\, and he writes for Zeit Online\, Cicero\, and Das Parlament. Dr. von Marschall is the Vice-Chairman of the Berlin Presse Club e.V. and the author of many books. SUMMARY:NYC: Democracy Under Pressure: Cleavages and Contestations
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The ACG\, in partnership with the Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences and the Germany Academy\, will host a discussion and reception on Democracy Under Pressure: Cleavages and Contestations.  \nProcesses of cultural\, social and economic diversification are omnipresent in a closely connected world. While often peaceful\, these processes also bring to the scene contestation and conflicts between groups over the distribution of economic resources and cultural influence: global realignments caused by migration\, supra-national decision-making\, and international economic interdependencies have added to citizens’ perceptions that their countries and societies are tightly coupled with other parts of the world and\, as a consequence\, are coming more and more “under stress”. People fear that their group or society might no longer be able to live as before or become one of the globalization losers. They perceive current global realignments as a threat to their individual identities\, mores\, economic prosperity\, and political self-determination.\nOn both sides of the Atlantic\, (too) rapid social change and growing social complexity may overwhelm indi-viduals who – nevertheless – attempt to deal with it via various mechanisms. One of the coping mechanisms can be seen in the formation and support of political and/or social movements that represent their interests. The America-First doctrine\, Brexit\, and the rise of right-wing (populist) parties in Europe might only be a harbinger of the new challenges which the Western democratic systems of representation\, conflict resolution and regulation will have to face in the years to come. Additionally\, new forms of mediatization and datafication are rising play-ers in the social and political arena\, armed with the power to transform the perception of social and political ‘truth/s’ – making it/them more contestable than ever and thus contributing to the complexity at hand.\nTo grasp the phenomenon at hand in its full complexity\, an interplay of social science and bordering discipli-nary perspectives (i.e. from law\, anthropology\, and media studies) are necessary. A transatlantic interdisciplinary research network (TIRN) and a joint doctoral program would provide the platform to explore these perspectives and to merge them in one comprehensive research program. The research aim of TIRN is then to investigate the (new) drivers\, fields and forms of social and political re-formation which characterize Europe and the US in the 21st century\, and to critically reflect the disciplines’ own role in past and present processes. The workshop on December 11-12\, 2018\, is dedicated to finding both the essentials for a common research program and also the academic and institutional partners to materialize our mission goal. \nRegistration for the event is required to attend. Meanwhile\, the German political system has also been undergoing its own transformation. As Chancellor Merkel’s tenure winds down\, the traditional Volksparteien – the CDU/CSU and the SPD – have lost traction and parties like the AfD and the Greens have gained support. In Europe\, the Brexit and rising populism give cause for concern. How Germany handles these transitions will have a significant impact on the stability of its democratic system\, its leadership role on a range of global issues\, its positions vis-à-vis the European Union\, and the country’s relationship with the United States. He currently holds the Max Weber Chair in German and European Studies at New York University. Dr. Martin studied political science at the University of Konstanz and holds a doctorate from there (2002). He was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Konstanz and at the Max-Planck-Institute in Jena (2003-2004)\, and he was an Assistant Professor at the University of Hamburg (2004-2008) and a Visiting Assistant Professor at Northwestern University (2008-2011). Dr. Martin’s research interests focus on the political conditions and consequences of globalization and regional integration. He has published\, inter alia\, on the effects of globalization for electoral participation and on the incentive to adopt more proportional voting systems in a highly globalized environment. His current research project is on backlashes against globalization and EU integration\, including the electoral success of the far-right AfD and the demise of social democracy. \n  \nDr. Joyce M. Mushaben is a Curators’ Professor of Comparative Politics and former Director of the Institute for Women’s and Gender Studies (2002-2005) at the University of Missouri – St. Louis. Fluent in German\, her teaching centers on comparative public policy\, the European Union\, women’s leadership\, citizenship\, immigration\, mega-cities\, and sustainability issues. Her research covers new social movements\, youth protest\, German unification and identities\, gender\, ethnicity and welfare issues\, EU migration and integration studies. A past President of the German Studies Association\, she has also served on the Executive Boards of the International Association for the Study of German Politics and the German Studies Association\, as well as on selection committees for Fulbright\, the German Academic Exchange Service\, and the American Council of Learned Societies. She is a current Editorial Board member for German Politics & Society\, German Politics\, and Femina Politica. Having received a 1999 Trailblazer Award and the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Research Creativity in 2007\, Dr. Mushaben is a three-time Alexander von Humboldt Fellow\, a former Ford Foundation Fellow\, German Marshall Fund grantee\, and DAAD recipient. She has held guest-scholar posts at the Academy for Social Sciences (GDR)\, the Center for Youth Research (GDR)\, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences\, and the Center for Transdisciplinary Gender Research. She was named the first Research Associate in the BMW Center for German & European Studies at Georgetown University\, has enjoyed Visiting Professorships at the Ohio State University\, Berlin’s Humboldt University\, the Missouri-London Program\, and the Universities of Erfurt\, Stuttgart\, and Tübingen\, inter alia. Affiliated with the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies and a designated Fulbright Specialist\, she is commonly known as “Dr. J.” \nRobin Cammarota is the Program Director and Digital Strategist for the American Council Germany. With a focus on engaging the next generation of transatlanticists\, much of her work is geared to digital outreach and new programming for young professionals. Ms. Cammarota manages the ACG’s fellowship programs\, leadership missions\, and study tours. She is also the main point person for all conferences\, including the German-American Conference and the Transatlantic Entrepreneur Partnership Conference. In addition\, she maintains the ACG’s presence on digital platforms\, including the Council’s website and social media\, as well as generating new digital content in the form of newsletters\, podcasts\, and videos. She also organizes the ACG’s Political Salons and Transatlantic Stammtisch\, which brings together a diverse group of younger and mid-career professionals for informal\, open discussions on timely topics in transatlantic relations. She joined the staff of the American Council on Germany in June 2009 as Fellowship Coordinator\, later becoming the Fellowship Manager in 2013. He was a member of the European Parliament from 1999 to 2005 and a member of the German Bundestag from 1994 to 1998. In this role\, she focuses on social policy such as promoting work-life balance\, expanding childcare\, providing inclusive education\, strengthening civic engagement\, and achieving gender equality.  From 2008 to 2013\, she served as the Spokesperson of the Working Group on Family Affairs\, Seniors\, Women and Youth of the Social Democrats (SPD) in the German Bundestag. Since December 2005\, she has been a member of the SPD’s Executive Board. \nHaving joined the Social Democrats in 1998\, Ms. Marks has served in various roles including Chair of the SPD group in Wedemark\, member of the SPD Executive Committee in Hannover\, Member of the Hannover Regional Assembly\, and member of the City Council of Wedemark. Prior to this position\, he served several years as Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) Parliamentary Group in the German Bundestag. Mr. Annen is also a member of the SPD’s Executive Committee and acts as the Chairperson of the SPD’s Commission for International Politics. His main foci of interest are transatlantic relations\, the Middle East\, and Russia\, as well as China and Latin America. From 2014 to 2018\, Mr. Annen also chaired the Bundestag’s Parliamentarian Friendship Group for Relations with the States of South Asia. As an advocate for a stronger German role in international diplomacy\, he supports multilateral engagement as a tool for resolving today’s conflicts and crises\, and protecting human rights. He was a senior resident fellow with the German Marshall Fund in Washington\, DC (2010 to 2011)\, and a researcher at the International Policy Analysis unit of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (2011 to 2013). Since 2014\, he has been the chairman of the Bundestag’s Committee on Foreign Affairs. He became a member of parliament in 1994. From 2009 to 2012 he was Federal Minister for Environment\, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety. Additionally\, he held the position of Deputy Chair of the CDU in Germany as well as Chair of the CDU in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia from 2010 to 2012. From 2005 to 2009 he served as Chief Parliamentary Secretary of the CDU/CSU congressional party. Prior to this position\, he was the Legal Policy Spokesman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group. Preceding his first term in parliament\, Dr. Röttgen studied law in Bonn from 1984 to 1993 and subsequently worked in the regional court. He attained his doctoral degree in 2001. RSVP (acceptances only) to the American Council on Germany at 212-826-3636 or events@acgusa.org. \nDr. Angela Stent (1982 Young Leader) is Director of the Center for Eurasian\, Russian\, and East European Studies and a Professor of Government and Foreign Service at Georgetown University. She is also a nonresident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution and co-chairs its Hewett Forum on Post-Soviet Affairs. From 2004 to 2006\, she was the National Intelligence Officer for Russia and Eurasia at the National Intelligence Council. From 1999 to 2001\, she served in the Office of Policy Planning at the U.S. Department of State. Dr. Stent’s academic work focuses on the triangular political and economic relationship between the United States\, Russia\, and Europe. \n  \nHer latest book is Putin’s World: Russia Against the West and With the Rest (Twelve\, 2019)\, for which she won the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy’s prize for the best book on U.S.-Russia relations. Other publications include: The Limits of Partnership: U.S.-Russian Relations in the Twenty-First Century (Princeton University Press\, 2014)\, for which she won the American Academy of Diplomacy’s Douglas Dillon prize for the best book on the practice of American diplomacy\, as well as Russia and Germany Reborn: Unification\, the Soviet Collapse\, and the New Europe (Princeton University Press\, 1999)\, and From Embargo to Ostpolitik: The Political Economy of West German-Soviet Relations\, 1955-1980 (Cambridge University Press\, 1981). \n  \nShe was a member of the senior advisory panel for NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander in Europe for Admiral James Stavridis and General Philip Breedlove. She is a contributing editor to Survival and is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Cold War Studies\, World Policy Journal\, Internationale Politik\, and Mirovaia Ekonomika i Mezhdunarodnie Otnosheniie. She has served on the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council for Russia and Central Asia\, and she is a Trustee of the Eurasia Foundation. Dr. Stent received her bachelor’s degree from Cambridge University\, her Master of Science degree with distinction from the London School of Economics and Political Science\, and a master’s and doctorate from Harvard University.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nThe ACG and the German Consulate and the German Consulate General will host a Political Salon with Jan Techau\, Director of the European Program and Senior Fellow at the German Marshall Fund in Berlin. \nJan Techau is a senior fellow and director of the Europe Program at The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF). As a foreign policy analyst\, his research focuses on European integration and the EU’s role in the world\, German foreign policy\, transatlantic relations\, and security and defense issues. He is co-author of Führungsmacht Deutschland – Strategie ohne Angst und Anmaßung (2017) and a regular contributor to German and international news media. Before joining GMF\, he was the director of the Richard C. Holbrooke Forum for the Study of Diplomacy and Governance at the American Academy in Berlin. From March 2011 to August 2016\, Mr. Techau was the director of Carnegie Europe in Brussels. He also served in the NATO Defense College’s Research Division in Rome from February 2010 until February 2011. He was director of the Alfred von Oppenheim Center for European Policy Studies at the German Council on Foreign Relations in Berlin between 2006 and 2010\, and from 2001 to 2006 he served at the German Ministry of Defense’s Press and Information Department. He holds an MA in political science from the Christian-Albrechts-Universität in Kiel\, Germany. He is an associate scholar at the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA) and an associate fellow at the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies (AICGS) in Washington\, DC. He lives with his family in Berlin. \nPolitical Salon: Promoting Dialogue Across Generations. This series brings together a diverse group of younger and mid-career professionals for informal\, open discussions on a range of current political\, economic\, and social topics in an increasingly interconnected global environment – with an emphasis on issues of concern for the transatlantic agenda. She also recently wrote a piece about Trump and Merkel\, which can be found here. \n  \nMs. Glasser has served as the top editor of several Washington publications; most recently\, she founded the award-winning Politico Magazine and went on to become the editor of Politico throughout the 2016 election cycle. She previously served as the editor-in-chief of Foreign Policy\, which won three National Magazine Awards\, among other honors\, during her tenure. \n  \nBefore that\, Ms. Glasser worked for a decade at the Washington Post\, where she was the editor of Outlook and national news. She also oversaw coverage of the impeachment of Bill Clinton\, served as a reporter covering the intersection of money and politics\, spent four years as the Post’s Moscow co-bureau chief\, and covered the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. She is the author of “Kremlin Rising: Vladimir Putin’s Russia and the End of Revolution\,” which she co-wrote with her husband\, Peter Baker. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The ACG will host a breakfast briefing with Jan Neutze\, Senior Director of Digital Diplomacy at Microsoft. \nRSVP (acceptances only) to the American Council on Germany at 212-826-3636 or events@acgusa.org. \nAs Senior Director for Digital Diplomacy\, Jan Neutze leads the Cybersecurity & Democracy Team in Microsoft’s Customer Security & Trust organization at the company’s headquarters. He manages the Microsoft “Defending Democracy Program\,” which brings together a team of experts focused on defending democratic processes and institutions against cyber-enabled interference. Mr. Neutze also leads the company’s efforts to advance cybersecurity norms as part of Microsoft’s “Digital Peace” initiative focused on reducing cyber conflict. From 2013 to 2017\, he built up and managed Microsoft’s cybersecurity program in Europe\, Middle East\, and Africa (EMEA). In that role\, Mr. Neutze led a team of experts based in Brussels with a focus on cybersecurity policy and regulatory issues as well as a range of strategic projects aimed at managing geopolitical risk. From 2011-2013\, Mr. Neutze worked in Microsoft’s Trustworthy Computing (TwC)\, focusing on cybersecurity public policy and engaging with partners from government\, international organizations\, and academia. He currently co-chairs the Global Future Council on Cybersecurity of the World Economic Forum (WEF) and has served in a range of advisory roles on cybersecurity policy issues. \nMr. Neutze joined Microsoft from the UN Headquarters where he served for three years in the Secretary-General’s Executive Office and in the Department of Political Affairs\, leading a range of cybercrime and counterterrorism projects. Prior to that\, he managed transatlantic policy projects at the German Marshall Fund of the United States and the Atlantic Council. He holds a J.D. from the University of Münster as well as an M.A. from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
