This is part of the 2017 Transatlantic Global Agenda Series.  \nRSVP (acceptances only) to the American Council on Germany at 212-826-3636 or events@acgusa.org. \nMax Gruenig is the President of Ecologic Institute US and has been with Ecologic Institute since 2007. His work focuses on sustainable development in the energy and transportation sector\, as well as urban sustainability and resilient cities. In particular\, he is leading the efforts by Ecologic Institute in the Emerging Leaders in Environmental and Energy Policy Network (ELEEP). He is also coordinating Post-Carbon Cities of Tomorrow (POCACITO) in the U.S. and Germany and the European research project Post-Carbon Cities in Europe: A Long-Term Outlook. In 2004\, Mr. Gruenig received his degree in Economics from the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. The main focus of his studies was natural resource economics and auction theory. Mr. Gruenig has lived and worked in Germany\, the United States\, Iceland\, and Japan. He is a founding member of the European Institute for Sustainable Transport (EURIST)\, a member of the Sustainability Advisory Board for NaturEnergiePlus\, and a member of the Consumer Research Network run by the German Federal Ministry for Justice and Consumer Protection (BMJV). Mr. Gruenig coauthored the book Low-Carbon Energy Security from a European Perspective with Patrizia Lombardi in 2016.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The ACG and Cultural Vistas will host a Political Salon with Souad Mekhennet\, Washington Post Correspondent and Author of I Was Told to Come Alone: My Journey Behind the Lines of Jihad. \nWednesday\, June 14\, 2017\n6:00 p.m. Happy Hour\n6:30 – 8:00 p.m. Discussion \nYou must register through Eventbrite in order to attend. \nSouad Mekhennet\, a reporter who has been covering the Middle East\, North Africa\, and radical Islamic movements since shortly after September 11\, is a correspondent for The Washington Post’s national security desk. She has also reported on terrorism for The New York Times\, The International Herald Tribune\, and NPR\, and she is the co-author of The Eternal Nazi\, Children of Jihad\, and Islam. She was one of two reporters who broke the story of Khaled el Masri’s rendition case and worked on a series called “Inside the Jihad\,” where she and her colleagues interviewed members of radical jihadist organizations all over the world. Ms. Mekhennet was a 2012 Nieman Fellow at Harvard University\, and she has been a visiting fellow at the Weatherhead Center for International Policy at Harvard\, the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS)\, and the Geneva Center for Security Policy. The daughter of a Turkish mother\, and a Moroccan father\, she was born and educated in Germany. She is an alumna of the ACG’s Young Leaders Study Group on the Future of Europe: Demographic Trends\, Migration\, and Social Cohesion.  \npolitical salon: promoting dialogue across generations. This series brings together a diverse group of younger and mid-career professionals for informal\, open discussions on a range of current political\, economic\, and social topics in an increasingly interconnected global environment – with an emphasis on issues of concern for the transatlantic agenda. Mr. Stokes is author of the recent Pew Research Center studies “Europeans Face the World Divided\,” “Euroskepticism Beyond Brexit\,” “Germany and the United States: Reliable Allies\,” and “Americans\, Japanese: Mutual Respect 70 Years After the End of WWII.” Mr. Stokes is a graduate of Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies. Born in Schönebeck\, East Germany\, Mr. Gill worked for three years as a plumber before attending the Theological Seminary of the Protestant Church in Berlin-Brandenburg. After the fall of the Berlin Wall\, he was among those maintaining the extensive files of the GDR’s Ministry of State Security\, the Stasi. In 1990\, he was Chairman of the Normannenstrasse Citizens’ Committee at the headquarters of the Ministry of State Security\, then Head of Administration of the Parliamentary Special Committee for the dissolution of the GDR Ministry of State Security/Office of National Security. From 1990 to 1992\, he was Spokesman and Head of Division of the Federal Commissioner for the Files of the State Security Service of the former GDR under Joachim Gauck. Mr. Gill studied Law at Freie Universität Berlin from 1992 to 1996 and went on to receive his Master of Laws from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia in 1998. He then interned at the United States Congress in Washington\, DC. From 2000 to 2001\, Mr. Gill worked as a Desk Officer at the Federal Ministry of the Interior\, then as a Desk Officer at the Office of the Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information in Berlin from 2001 to 2003. From 2004 to 2012\, he served as the Deputy Representative of the Council of the Protestant Church in Germany (EKD) to the Federal Republic of Germany and the EU. Before his assignment as Consul General in New York\, Mr. Gill was State Secretary and Head of the Office of the Federal President from 2012 to 2017. He was a delegate to the American-German Young Leaders Conference in Nashville in 1992.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Prior to this\, he was the Head of the Policy and Counseling Department at the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung from 2013 to 2016. During this time\, his main focus was on political planning and strategy\, analysis\, and counseling political parties\, as well as addressing populism. From 2006 to 2012\, Mr. Lange headed the Ukraine office of the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung and also taught Political Science and International Relations at the University of Greifswald\, the Department of International Relations at the State University of St. Petersburg\, and the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. Before joining the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung\, Mr. Lange worked for the CDU/CSU faction in the German Bundestag\, and from 2003 to 2006\, he was with the Robert Bosch Foundation in St. Petersburg\, Russia. Mr. Lange studied Political Science\, Communications\, and Computer Science after completing his military service in the Bundeswehr\, where he had assignments in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo. \n  \nJeffrey Rathke is a Senior Fellow and Deputy Director of the Europe Program at CSIS. Previously\, he served as Director of the State Department Press Office\, from May 2014 to June 2015 (and acting Deputy Spokesperson in April and May). He joined the Foreign Service in 1991 and retired in June 2015. Mr. Rathke served in Kuala Lumpur as Counselor for Political Affairs from 2011 to 2014. Prior to that\, he was Deputy Director of the Private Office of the NATO Secretary General in Brussels. He also served in Berlin as Minister-Counselor for Political Affairs from 2006 to 2009. His Washington assignments have included Deputy Director of the Office of European Security and Political Affairs (EUR/RPM) and Duty Officer in the White House Situation Room and State Department Operations Center. Mr. Rathke was a Weinberg Fellow at Princeton University from 2003 to 2004\, winning the Master’s in Public Policy Prize. He served at the U.S. Embassy in Dublin from 2001 to 2003\, covering multilateral politics during Ireland’s tenure on the UN Security Council. From 1999 to 2001\, he was posted in Moscow and was responsible for relations with the Russian legislative branch in the Political Section. He was assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Berlin from 1994 to 1996 and helped open the U.S. Embassy in Riga from 1992 to 1994. He previously headed the public-policy representation of Deutsche Bank in Berlin and was the Managing Director of the Alfred Herrhausen Gesellschaft\, the International Forum of Deutsche Bank. Early in his career\, he served as Special Assistant for Europe to Federal Chancellor Helmut Schmidt. He was the Director General of the German Foreign Ministry and held senior staff positions with Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher – when he was deeply involved in negotiations on German unification – and with Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel\, when he worked toward a solution to the Balkan crisis. As Permanent Representative and Ambassador to the United Nations in New York\, he negotiated the first four UN resolutions on the Iranian nuclear issue\, which became the foundation for the so-called 3+3 Iranian nuclear deal\, accomplished in 2014. Ambassador Matussek sits on a number of boards\, including the Deutsche Gesellschaft für die Vereinten Nationen (United Nations Association of Germany); Institute for Strategic Dialogue in London; Internationaler Wirtschaftssenat e.V. She is also a nonresident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution and co-chairs its Hewett Forum on Post-Soviet Affairs. During the 2015-2016 academic year\, she was a fellow at the Transatlantic Academy of the German Marshall Fund. From 2004 to 2006\, she was the National Intelligence Officer for Russia and Eurasia at the National Intelligence Council.  From 1999 to 2001\, she served in the Office of Policy Planning at the U.S. Department of State. Dr. Stent’s academic work focuses on the triangular political and economic relationship between the United States\, Russia\, and Europe. Her publications include: Russia and Germany Reborn: Unification\, the Soviet Collapse\, and the New Europe (Princeton University Press\, 1999); From Embargo to Ostpolitik: The Political Economy of West German-Soviet Relations\, 1955-1980 (Cambridge University Press\, 1981); Putin’s World (2014); and “Putin’s Power Play in Syria: How to Respond to Russia’s Intervention” (Foreign Affairs\, January/February 2016). Her latest book is The Limits of Partnership: U.S.-Russian Relations in the Twenty-First Century (Princeton University Press\, 2014)\, for which she won the American Academy of Diplomacy’s Douglas Dillon prize for the best book on the practice of American diplomacy. She was a member of the senior advisory panel for NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander in Europe for Admiral James Stavridis and General Philip Breedlove. She is a contributing editor to Survival and is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Cold War Studies\, World Policy Journal\, Internationale Politik\, and Mirovaia Ekonomika i Mezhdunarodnie Otnosheniie. She has served on the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council for Russia and Central Asia\, and she is a Trustee of the Eurasia Foundation. Dr. Stent received her bachelor’s degree from Cambridge University\, her Master of Science degree with distinction from the London School of Economics and Political Science\, and a master’s and doctorate from Harvard University.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Prior to this\, Ambassador Heusgen was the Foreign Policy and Security Advisor to Chancellor Angela Merkel. He served as Director and Head of the Policy Unit for High Representative Javier Solana in the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union from 1999 to 2005. Between 1988 and 1999\, Ambassador Heusgen served in various capacities at the Foreign Office in Bonn\, including Deputy Director-General for European Affairs from 1997 to 1999\, and Head of Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel’s Private Office in charge of European Affairs from 1993 to 1997\, serving as Deputy Head of the office starting in 1994. From 1990 to 1992\, he was Deputy Head of the special section in charge of negotiations on the Treaty of Maastricht. He held the position of Private Secretary to the Coordinator for German-French Relations from 1988 to 1990. From 1986 to 1988\, Ambassador Heusgen served in Germany’s Paris Embassy. He joined the Foreign Service in 1980 and began his Foreign Service career in the Press and Economic Affairs Office in the German Consulate in Chicago\, where he worked from 1983 to 1986. He is a graduate of the University of Saint Gallen in Switzerland and Georgia South College in the United States. He earned a doctorate degree in Economics from the University of Saint Gallen in 1980. \nDr. Richard Haass has been President of the Council on Foreign Relations for the past 15 years. In 2013\, he served as the chair of the multiparty negotiations in Northern Ireland that provided the foundation for the 2014 Stormont House Agreement. From January 2001 to June 2003\, Dr. Haass was Director of Policy Planning for the Department of State\, where he was a principal advisor to Secretary of State Colin Powell. Confirmed by the U.S. Senate to hold the rank of ambassador\, Dr. Haass also served as U.S. coordinator for policy toward the future of Afghanistan and U.S. envoy to the Northern Ireland peace process. From 1989 to 1993\, he was Special Assistant to President George H.W. Bush and Senior Director for Near East and South Asian affairs on the staff of the National Security Council. Previously\, he served in the Departments of State (1981-1985) and Defense (1979-1980)\, and was a legislative aide in the U.S. Senate. Dr. Haass also was Vice President and Director of Foreign Policy studies at the Brookings Institution\, the Sol M. Linowitz Visiting Professor of International Studies at Hamilton College\, a Senior Associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace\, a Lecturer in Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School\, and a Research Associate at the International Institute for Strategic Studies. A Rhodes Scholar\, Dr. Haass holds a bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College and master’s and doctorate degrees from Oxford University. Dr. Haass is the author or editor of 13 books on American foreign policy and one book on management. Prior to this\, he was German Ambassador to the United Nations in New York and represented Germany during its tenure as a member of the UN Security Council from 2011 until 2012. There\, he drew on his wide expertise in UN matters\, having previously served as Director-General for United Nations and Global Issues at the German Foreign Office in Berlin and having been posted to the German Permanent Mission in New York in the late 1980s. Ambassador Wittig joined the German Foreign Service in 1982. He has also served in Madrid\, as the private secretary to the Foreign Minister\, and as Ambassador both in Lebanon and then in Cyprus. He was the German Government Special Envoy on the “Cyprus question” (the division of Cyprus). He has extensive knowledge of the Middle East. This uncertainty in Europe’s biggest economy comes in the wake of an election that saw the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) secure more than 90 seats in the Bundestag and an increasingly Euro-skeptic Free Democratic Party listing to the right. \nThis panel will address some of the questions that abound. Dr. Rüttgers is the former Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia\, the most populous state of the Federal Republic of Germany. He was the first Christian Democrat since 1966 to serve as Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia\, a position he held from 2005 to 2010. He was also a member of the Parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia from 2000 to 2012 and Chairman of the Parliamentary Group of the CDU from 2000 to 2005. As Minister-President\, he successfully managed the onset of the global financial crisis by gradually reducing subsidies for the coal industry\, preventing the closure of an automobile plant in his state\, and committing to job-saving measures. Before focusing his political work on North Rhine-Westphalia\, Dr. Rüttgers held various posts in German federal politics. Between 1987 and 2000\, he was a member of the German Bundestag. From 1991 to 1994\, Dr. Rüttgers was the First Secretary of the CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group. In 1994\, he was appointed Federal Minister for Education\, Science\, Research\, and Technology by then-Chancellor Helmut Kohl. He serves on the Boards of several foundations\, including the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and the Council of Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation. He is Chairman of the Board of Stiftung Bundeskanzler-Adenauer-Haus and President of the German branch of the Jerusalem Foundation. Since August 2001\, Dr. Hüther has also been an Honorary Professor at the European Business School in Oestrich-Winkel. In the academic year 2016-17\, he was Gerda Henkel Adjunct Professor in the Department of German Studies at Stanford University. In 1999\, he joined DekaBank as Chief Economist and\, starting in 2001\, additionally served as Division Manager of economics and communication. In 1995\, he was appointed Secretary General of the German Council of Economic Advisers. Upon completion of his Doctorate in Economics\, in 1991\, Dr. Hüther became a member of the research staff of the Council of Experts for the Evaluation of Macroeconomic Development. From 1982 to 1987\, he studied economics as well as medieval and modern history at the Justus-Liebig University in Gießen. Dr. Hüther and his team carry out research on pressing issues including the eurozone’s future governance design\, digitalization\, German Ordnungspolitik\, the past economic crisis\, and capital market supervision. Feltman (1986 Young Leader) assumed the post of Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs at the United Nations on July 2\, 2012. He was appointed by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. He will conclude his tenure at the UN on March 29\, 2018. As Under-Secretary-General and head of the Department of Political Affairs\, Ambassador Feltman advises the Secretary-General on peace and security issues globally\, while overseeing “good offices” initiatives and field-based political missions carrying out peacemaking\, preventive diplomacy\, and peace-building activities in Africa\, Europe\, the Middle East\, Central and Southeast Asia\, and the Americas. He also oversees the United Nations electoral assistance provided to dozens of its member states each year. The Under-Secretary-General regularly briefs the Security Council and travels extensively on behalf of the UN’s peace and security agenda. In December\, Ambassador Feltman went on a widely reported mission to North Korea. \nBefore joining the United Nations\, Ambassador Feltman served for nearly 30 years in the U.S. Foreign Service\, focused especially on the Middle East and North Africa. His last position was as Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs\, from which he retired at the rank of Career Minister. He served previously as U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Lebanon and held earlier diplomatic postings in Baghdad\, Erbil\, Jerusalem\, Tunis\, Tel Aviv\, Budapest\, and Port-au-Prince\, as well as with responsibility for coordinating U.S. assistance to countries of Eastern and Central Europe. Earlier\, he was a staff member at the American Council on Germany. She is working with the Alliance for Securing Democracy project at GMF on issues related to media. Dr. Tworek has published in academic venues including Journal of Policy History\, Business History Review\, International Journal of Communication\, Journal of Global History\, Journalism Studies\, and German History. She has also published in newspapers and magazines including Foreign Affairs\, The Atlantic\, Politico\, Wired\, and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. She previously held the position of Assistant Director of Undergraduate Studies and Lecturer on History in the History Department at Harvard University. Dr. Tworek has held visiting fellowships at Birkbeck\, University of London and the Centre for Contemporary History\, Potsdam\, Germany. She was a fellow at the Transatlantic Academy at GMF in 2016–17.
