Can Angela Merkel continue her chancellorship and her trademark governance with a steady hand? What would follow for the stability of Europe and German-American relations if Merkel were not to be re-elected? Is there an option for a center-left majority that would include the former communist state party Die Linke (Left Party)? What will be the electoral fate of the far-right Alternative für Deutschland and its nativist agenda? Will its support dwindle as those of other authoritarian populist parties have\, or will they see an unexpected upswing? On the night after the election\, this panel discussion will bring together distinguished experts on German politics to conduct an analysis of the election results and to discuss the direction the country is likely to take under a new government. Special attention will be given to election results from eastern Germany and the specific role the electorate there plays in shaping the composition of the 19th German Bundestag.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:NYC: The End of Jamaica\, the End of Merkel? Analyzing What Happened and What Lies Ahead
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The American Council on Germany\, Deutsches Haus at NYU\, and NYU’s Center for European and Mediterranean Studies will host a Panel Discussion with Dr. Sheri Berman\, Professor of Political Science at Barnard College and Columbia University; Thomas Jahn\, New York Correspondent at Handelsblatt; Dr. Christian Martin\, Professor of European and Mediterranean Studies and Max Weber Visiting Chair in German and European Studies at New York University; and Dr. Steven E. Sokol\, President at the American Council on Germany (Moderator). \nYou must register through Eventbrite in order to attend. Please click on the link below:\nEventbrite Registration \n  \nTo the surprise of many political observers\, late on Sunday night\, November 19\, the FDP walked out on talks about forming a coalition government with the CDU/CSU and the Greens. More than two months after the election\, Germany is still without a new government – and questions abound. \nJoin our panel of distinguished experts to discuss the ramifications of the failed coalition negotiations and what lies ahead. Will there be snap elections? Will Angela Merkel form a minority government? What does this mean for Europe and for Germany’s role in the world? Why are the Social Democrats so adamantly opposed to joining another grand coalition? Will all of this strengthen the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD)? And\, is this the beginning of the end of the Merkel era?[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
