SUMMARY:Exiles and Democracy:  80 Years of the Council for a Democratic Germany
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]On May 2\, the American Council on Germany\, the German Law Journal\,  the Robert Bosch Foundation Alumni Association\, and Orte der Demokratiegeschichte will host a discussion and reception with Prof. Eckart Goebel\, Chair of Comparative Literature and German Philology at the University of Tübingen\, and Dr. Natalia Savelyeva\, Lecturer at the University of Wisconsin and Future Russia Fellow with the Democratic Resilience Program at the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA). \nTo register\, please email mcdonaldj@wlu.edu by April 30. \nIn the spring of 1944\, sensing that the tide of the war was turning\, exiled German dissidents in the United States began discussions envisioning a new\, democratic\, post-war Germany. Meeting as the “Council for a Democratic Germany\,” the group consisted of an impressive – and impressively diverse – collection of German intellectuals\, artists\, politicians\, scholars\, and civil servants. The respected theologian Paul Tillich chaired the Council\, which was originally formed with support from Thomas Mann. Bertolt Brecht was a member of the founding committee. The Council issued its declaration on May 3\, 1944\, insisting that the “German problem” would require a European solution. The Council recognized that the defeat of Nazism and the eventual disarmament of Germany remained the immediate priority. Looking ahead to the hoped-for peace\, the Council strongly opposed the dismemberment of a defeated and occupied Germany. It also opposed talk of deindustrializing Germany\, which risked creating “economic conditions that would become hopelessly depressed in all countries of Europe.” The Council urged the establishment of a democratic government in Germany supported by rejuvenated civil society institutions and robust democratic education. After the Council issued its May Declaration\, subcommittees produced policy reports on reconstruction and economic renewal\, as well as reform of the press and media\, cultural policy\, health policy\, education policy\, administration\, and legal culture. \nJoin us on May 2 to mark the 80th anniversary of the Council’s Declaration and reflect on its work. \nProf. Eckart Goebel\, a University of Tübingen Philosopher and Cultural Critic\, will discuss the Council\, building off his study “Escape to Life”: German Intellectuals in New York: A Compendium on Exile after 1933 (2012). This includes an acknowledgment of two stark developments. On the one hand\, the Council stirred political resentment and petty jealousy within the broader German exile community in the U.S. On the other hand\, the Allies seemed to largely disregard the Council’s efforts. The event will also use the historical reflection on the Council to consider contemporary exiles’ work to promote democracy in their homelands. Dr. Natalia Savelyeva\, a Russian Sociologist at the University of Wisconsin who writes extensively on the Russian war against Ukraine\, will discuss her experiences of dissidence and the chances for impacting Russian politics\, scholarship\, and life in the United States. \n  \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

She is a leading expert on European and international affairs and has had a 20-year career at renowned think tanks\, foundations\, and universities. \nMost recently\, from 2021 to 2023\, she served as Executive Director for Europe and Central Asia at the Open Society Foundations\, the world’s largest foundation working to strengthen the rule of law\, democracy\, and open societies. In 2021\, she was appointed honorary professor of political science at Freie Universität Berlin. In autumn 2022\, she was a visiting professor at Harvard University\, with which she has also been affiliated as a senior fellow. \nFrom 2016 to 2021\, she was director and CEO of the German Council on Foreign Relations. (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Auswärtige Politik\, DGAP). Prior to that\, she served as research director on the executive team of the German Marshall Fund of the United States and led its Berlin office and Europe program. From 2004 to 2013\, she worked for the German Institute for International and Security Affairs\, where she headed the Europe research group beginning in 2008. From 1999 to 2004\, she was an opinion page editor and France correspondent for the Financial Times Deutschland. \nDr. Schwarzer is regularly consulted as an expert and policy advisor. She was co-rapporteur of the working group on EU reform and enlargement\, convened by the French and German governments\, which submitted its report in September 2023. From 2020 to 2022\, served as special advisor to the High Representative and Vice-President of the European Commission Josep Borrell. She also advised France and Poland during their respective EU presidencies and was a consultant to the French prime minister’s Centre dʼAnalyse Stratégique. She is a member of the supervisory boards of BNP Paribas and Covivio\, an honorary board member of DGA\,P and a non-executive board member of the Jacques Delors Institute/Centre (Paris\, Berlin)\, and a Council member of the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR). According to the association charter\, the President represents the DAAD in all organization-related matters. He serves as the chairperson of the Executive Committee\, prepares its deliberations and resolutions\, and ensures their implementation. He also chairs the meeting of the Board of Trustees and the General Assembly. His responsibilities include appointing the Secretary-General following confirmation by the Executive Committee and supervising the organization’s management. \nOn October 1\, 2023\, Prof. Dr. Mukherjee took office as Rector of the University of Cologne. In cooperation with the other members of the Rectorate\, he represents the university externally and is responsible for its management and strategic development. He chairs the Rectorate and the Senate and is the chief supervisor of the university’s scientific staff. He also defines the guidelines for the execution of the Rectorate’s tasks. \nProf. Dr. Mukherjee completed his studies in English\, Biology\, and Education at RWTH Aachen University in 1997. In 2000\, he received his doctorate at the University of Bonn; he also completed his habilitation in 2003 and was awarded the venia legendi for English Philology. \nChristopher Walker is Vice President for Studies and Analysis at the National Endowment for Democracy\, an independent\, nonprofit\, grant-making foundation supporting freedom worldwide. Mr. Walker oversees the multidimensional department that is responsible for NED’s analytical and thought leadership efforts. Before joining the NED\, he was Vice President for Strategy and Analysis at Freedom House. He has testified before legislative committees in the U.S. and abroad\, appears frequently in the media\, and frequently conducts briefings on critical issues relating to democratic development. He has been at the forefront of thought leadership on modern authoritarian influence on open political systems\, including through the exertion of sharp power\, a concept he and his colleagues developed. \nMr. Walker has also served as an Adjunct Professor of International Affairs at New York University. He holds a B.A. from Binghamton University and an M.A. from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. \nDr. Lily McElwee is the Deputy Director and Fellow in the Freeman Chair in China Studies at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS)\, where she researches Chinese foreign policy\, U.S.-China relations\, and EU-China relations. She is currently writing a book on the history of U.S. investment gatekeeping amid the rise of China as a strategy and policy fellow with the Smith Richardson Foundation. Dr. McElwee recently completed a fellowship with the American Council on Germany\, where she researched European political debate on China\, and she is a 2022–23 CSIS-USC U.S.-Korea nextgen scholar. He joined KfW as Co-CEO in October 2021. Prior to joining KfW\, Mr. Wintels worked at Citigroup for 20 Years (2001 – 2021) in various leadership roles. Most recently\, he was the Global Co-Head Financial Institutions Group and a member of the Global Executive Committee of the Banking Capital Markets & Advisory Division. He was also Vice Chairman of Citigroup in Germany\, Chief Country Officer for Germany as well as CEO of Citigroup Global Markets Europe AG until March 2020. Stefan Wintels began his professional career in 1994 at Deutsche Bank AG (1994-2001) and left as Managing Director at Deutsche Bank’s Corporate Development/ Group Strategy Department. \nMr. Wintels received a master’s degree in business administration from the Technische Universität Berlin and participated in a 2nd year MBA program at the University of Illinois\, Urbana-Champaign. Ms. Clüver Ashbrook was executive director of the Future of Diplomacy Project at the Harvard Kennedy School in Cambridge\, Massachusetts for ten years. The project\, which she co-founded\, addresses 21st-century foreign policy challenges through research by international leaders in academia and diplomacy as well as teaching conflict research and prevention. Beginning in 2018\, Ms. Clüver Ashbrook also directed a research program on Europe and transatlantic relations. Previously\, she served on the management board of the European Policy Centre (EPC) in Brussels and worked as both a consultant and senior journalist at Roland Berger Strategy Consultants in France and China\, among other countries. She began her career as a television journalist at CNN International in Atlanta and London. \nMs. Clüver Ashbrook contributes to international publications\, such as The New York Times and The Washington Post\, as well as leading German media on transatlantic relations – especially trade and security policy – and German foreign and digital policy. Additionally\, she advises foreign ministries in Europe and South America on their digital strategy. She received her undergraduate honors degree in international relations and French civilization from Brown University\, a master’s degree in European studies from the London School of Economics\, and a master’s degree in public administration from the Harvard Kennedy School\, where she was a Hauser Fellow in Non-Profit Management. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]On June 20\, the ACG will host a breakfast briefing with Dr. Franziska Brantner\, Parliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action\, and Member of the German Bundestag (Greens). \nFranziska Brantner has been serving as the Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action since December 2021. Dr. Brantner was an elected member of the Bundestag representing the Green Party (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen) from 2013 to 2021 where she represented the 274th district Heidelberg. During this time\, she was in various parliamentary groups including the Children and Family Policy group\, the Committee on Foreign Affairs\, and the Committee on the Affairs of the European Union. In this position\, she served as the spokesperson for European Policy for her party. From 2009 to 2013 Dr. Brantner was a member of the European Parliament\, where she served on the Committee on Foreign Affairs and as spokeswoman for The Greens/European Free Alliance party. Her political career began in 1996 when she joined the regional board of “The Green Youth of Baden-Würtemberg.” \nDr. Brantner received her PhD from the University of Mannheim in 2010 with her doctoral thesis on the United Nations’ capacity for reform. She studied at Sciences Po and Columbia University for her undergraduate and graduate degrees. Dr. Brantner is a member of the Heinrich Böll Foundation’s General Assembly and the Chair of the Supervisory Board of Germany Trade and Invest (GTAI).[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]By popular demand\, the ACG is delighted to make today’s discussion with Consul General David Gill a hybrid event. Mr. Gill will join us in person in our New York office to reflect on his seven years in NYC and his preparation for his next posting in Ireland. \nDavid Gill grew up in a Protestant minister’s family in Herrnhut\, Saxony\, in former East Germany. He was denied a higher education by the Communist regime for political reasons. Instead\, he trained and worked as a plumber before joining a preparatory protestant school and later the theological seminary of the Protestant Church in Berlin-Brandenburg. In 1990\, he initially was the chairman of the Normannenstrasse Citizens’ Committee\, which oversaw the dissolution of the Ministry of State Security at the Stasi headquarters and served as the secretary of the Special Committee for the dissolution of the Stasi of the East German Parliament. After reunification\, Mr. Gill became spokesman and head of the research division of the Federal Commissioner for the Stasi-Files before studying Law in Berlin and Philadelphia. \nAfter holding positions in the Federal Ministry of the Interior and at the Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information in Berlin\, he served as the Deputy Representative of the Council of the Protestant Church in Germany to the Federal Republic of Germany and the European Union. During Federal President Joachim Gauck’s term from 2012–2017\, he was state secretary and chief of staff of the President. Since August 2017\, Mr. Gill has been the German Consul General in New York.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

His research interests include data profiling\, data quality and cleansing\, and data integration\, recorded in over 250 scientific publications. She arrives at GMF after 12 years at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS)\, where she most recently served as senior vice president for Europe\, Eurasia\, and the Arctic and as director of the Europe\, Russia\, and Eurasia Program. She previously served four years as executive director of the Office of the Chairman of the Board at the American National Red Cross\, where she supported the first comprehensive reform of the governance structure of the American Red Cross Board since 1947\, incorporating modern best-governance practices. She worked closely with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on the International Movement’s policies and programs in the Middle East and elsewhere. From 2001 to 2005\, Ms. Conley was deputy assistant secretary of state in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs with responsibilities for U.S. bilateral relations with the countries of Northern and Central Europe. She co-led the U.S. interagency effort to enlarge NATO and secure Senate ratification of an Amended NATO Treaty\, and she created a senior level U.S. dialogue with the eight Nordic and Baltic states\, the Enhanced Partnership in Europe (e-PINE). \nMs. Conley began her career in the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs at the U.S. Department of State. She was selected to serve as special assistant to the coordinator of U.S. assistance to the newly independent states of the former Soviet Union\, and she has received two State Department Meritorious Honor Awards. Ms. Conley frequently appears as a foreign policy analyst and Europe expert on CNN\, MSNBC\, BBC\, NPR\, and PBS\, among other prominent media outlets. She received her B.A. in international studies from West Virginia Wesleyan College and her M.A. in international relations from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Nazarian was earlier this year the inaugural Gahl Hodges Burt Scholar at the American Academy in Berlin. She is an expert on antisemitism and its intersection with democratic crisis across Europe\, North America\, and Australia. Dr. Nazarian is the president of the Y&S Nazarian Family Foundation\, with a regional office in Israel called the Ima Foundation. She is the founder of the Younes & Soraya Nazarian Center for Israel Studies at University of California\, Los Angeles\, housed at UCLA’s International Institute\, which provides a systematic\, academic study of contemporary Israel. In 2017\, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) appointed Dr. Nazarian as senior vice president in international affairs. She served in this role for five years\, acting as chief diplomat and policymaker of ADL\, meeting with heads of state\, foreign ministers\, and leaders of Jewish communities around the world and advancing ADL’s initiatives for fighting antisemitism and racial hatred globally. She also oversaw ADL’s Israel office. \nDr. Nazarian currently serves as a member of ADL’s national board of directors\, a trustee of the board of Freedom House\, and is a member of the Council of Foreign Relations. She also chairs the board of the Y&S Nazarian Center for Israel Studies at UCLA and sits on the board of governors of University of Haifa. His clients include companies from various industries such as automotive\, chemicals and retail & consumer products. In his previous role\, Mr. Heck was the Head of the China Business Group at PwC Germany and Chairman of the European China Business Group at PwC from August 2016 until April 2024. He advised Chinese companies on their investments in Europe as well as European companies with their investment in China and Asia. During a secondment to China from 2012 – 2016\, Mr. Heck led the German Business Group of PwC Hong-Kong and Mainland China. During a secondment to New York 2005-2007\, he served US MNCs as an audit manager. \nMr. Heck graduated from Hochschule Pforzheim in 1998. From 2000 to 2005\, he was a guest lecturer at Pforzheim Business School. Before that\, he had various positions as a visiting scholar and  fellow at Harvard University in the United States\, Cambridge University\, and Oxford University in the United Kingdom. He is a senior fellow at the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs in New York and a senior advisor to the Berggruen Institute in Los Angeles. He holds a ThD in comparative religion and a Ph.D. in linguistics. His academic interests include democratic theory\, politics and religion\, and theories of secularism\, pluralism\, and cosmopolitanism. In the academic year 2017-18\, he was a visiting scholar at National Taiwan University and City University Hong Kong. Since then\, he has focused on the rise of China and what it means for the democracies in East Asia. Dr. Görlach is an honorary professor of ethics and theology at Leuphana University in Lüneburg\, Germany. He is the founder of the debate magazine The European\, which he also ran as its editor-in-chief from 2009 to 2015. Today\, he is an op-ed contributor to the New York Times\, Neue Zürcher Zeitung\, and the South China Morning Post. He is a columnist for the business magazine Wirtschaftswoche\, Deutsche Welle\, and Focus Online. He is a frequent commentator on German News Channel WeLT TV. \nDr. Aziz Rana is a law professor at Boston College Law School\, where his research and teaching center on American constitutional law and political development. His work focuses on how shifting notions of race\, citizenship\, and empire have shaped legal and political identity since the founding. \nRana’s first book\, The Two Faces of American Freedom (Harvard University Press)\, situates the American experience within the global history of colonialism\, examining the intertwined relationship in American constitutional practice between internal accounts of freedom and external projects of power and expansion. His forthcoming book\, The Constitutional Bind: How Americans Came to Idolize a Document that Fails Them (University of Chicago Press\, 2024)\, explores the modern emergence of constitutional veneration in the twentieth century — especially against the backdrop of growing American global authority — and how veneration has influenced the boundaries of popular politics. \nHe received a B.A. from Harvard College\, my J.D. from Yale Law School\, and my Ph.D. in political science from Harvard University.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

She has more than 10 years of experience in the business and political department. Ms. Schäuble has developed and continues to organize political conferences on a regular basis in cooperation with the Freie Universität Berlin and the Schwarzkopf-Stiftung. She earned her master’s degree in political science at the University of Potsdam\, Germany. Her studies included one semester at American University in Washington\, DC\, where she took classes in American foreign policy and worked part-time for the American Council of Young Political Leaders. \nIn 2009 and 2010\, she was trained in the Media Manager Program of the publishing house Georg von Holtzbrinck. In 2006\, she was a Fellow of the Johanna Quandt Foundation for economic journalists. Neiman and Dr. Keidrick Roy. \n  \nWhat unites individuals to engage in political struggles across geographical\, social\, religious\, and political divides and perceived boundaries? How do solidarity movements challenge the interests and positions of powerful states and systems\, both past and present? Solidarity work between minority groups and communities has fluctuated throughout history with common efforts and transnational solidarity has been integral to change and progress. However\, international solidarities and their ideological differences have evolved overtime. Join moral philosopher Susan Neiman and scholar Keidrick Roy for a discussion on the intersection of politics\, ethnicity\, race\, and solidarity in today’s complex world. What is political solidarity? How is political solidarity shaped by race\, religion\, and ethnicity? If there is no shared vision for the future\, is collective solidarity hopeless? Together\, they will explore how collective memory and history influences our political landscape and the challenges of encouraging solidarity across racial\, ethnic\, and ideological divides. \n  \nSusan Neiman is an American philosopher and writer. She has written extensively on the Enlightenment\, moral philosophy\, metaphysics\, and politics. Her work shows that philosophy is a living force for contemporary thinking and action. \nBorn and raised in Atlanta\, Georgia\, during the Civil Rights Movement\, Dr. Neiman dropped out of high school to join American activists working for peace and justice. Later she studied philosophy at Harvard University\, earning her Ph.D. in 1986 under the direction of John Rawls and Stanley Cavell. In the 80s she spent six years in Berlin\, studying at the Free University and working as a freelance writer. She was professor of philosophy at Yale and Tel Aviv University. In 2000 she assumed her current position as director of the Einstein Forum in Potsdam. \nDr. Neiman has been a Member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton\, a Fellow at the Rockefeller Foundation Study Center in Bellagio\, and a Senior Fellow of the American Council of Learned Societies. She is now a member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and the American Philosophical Society. She is the author of nine books\, translated into 15 languages\, which have won prizes from\, among others\, PEN\, the Association of American Publishers\, and the American Academy of Religion. Her shorter pieces have appeared in The New York Times\, The New York Review of Books\, The Globe and Mail\, The Guardian\, Die Zeit\, Der Spiegel\, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung\, and many other publications. \n  \nKeidrick Roy is a Junior Fellow at the Harvard Society of Fellows and a scholar of American history\, literature\, and political thought since the Revolutionary era. In 2025\, he will be Assistant Professor of Government at Dartmouth College. His research brings the ideas of prominent and lesser-known African American figures across U.S. history to bear on urgent social and political concerns\, including the place of race\, religion\, and optimism in modern society. Dr. Roy’s forthcoming book\, American Dark Age: Racial Feudalism and the Rise of Black Liberalism\, reveals how a Black liberal tradition that developed in the years leading up to the Civil War holds vital lessons for us today as hate groups threaten U.S. democracy. \nDr. Roy has received national attention through media outlets such as CBS News Sunday Morning and the Chicago Review of Books and appears in the HBO documentary Frederick Douglass: In Five Speeches. He studied Law\, Political Science and History at the Universities of Bonn and Munich\, at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris (Sciences-Po) and at Yale Law School. Visiting researcher Harvard Law School 2000; annual Visiting lecturer University of Warsaw since 2000; Visiting professor at Paris 1 (Panthéon-Sorbonne) 2007 and at Paris 2 (Panthéon-Assas) 2010; General Course Academy of European Law\, European University Institute\, Florence\, 2011; Senior Emile Noël Fellow\, NYU School of Law 2011; Visiting professor of Law at Columbia Law School Winter term 2012/2013; Short Term International Visiting Professor of Law at Columbia Law School Fall term 2024 (non-resident). \nProfessor Mayer was Counsel in proceedings at the German Constitutional Court to the German Parliament in the Treaty of Lisbon-trial in 2008-2009 and in the first case related to the Euro-crisis\, the case on the Euro stabilization mechanism 2010-2012\, his most recent case for the German Parliament was the Next Generation EU-case on the €800 billion temporary recovery instrument (2021-2022). He was Counsel at the German Constitutional Court to the German government in the CETA case (2016-2022) and in the case on the Unified European Patent Court (2017-2020). His most recent case for the German government concerns the constitutionality of the new EP election law (2023-2024). In 2023\, he was part of a Franco-German Group of 12 experts invited by the German and the French minister for Europe to write a report on institutional reform of the EU. \nHis teaching and research interests focus on European constitutional and administrative law\, on comparative law\, on the relationship between European law and politics\, on parliaments in times of globalization\, on internet law\, sports law (European soccer law) and more generally on international law and public law. Since 2016\, he has been a member of the German Football Association’s Federal Court (DFB Bundesgericht)\, ethics chamber. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]On October 29\, the American Council on Germany and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) New York Office will host an event with Hermann Gröhe\, member of the German Bundestag and Deputy Chairman of the CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group. \n  \nHermann Gröhe is a German lawyer and politician of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) who served as Minister of Health in the third cabinet of Chancellor Angela Merkel from 2013 until 2018. Becoming a member of the CDU in 1977\, Mr. Gröhe has been a member of the German Bundestag since 1994. Between 1998 and 2005\, he was his parliamentary group’s spokesperson on human rights and humanitarian aid. He subsequently served on the Committee on Foreign Affairs from 2005 until 2008. From 2008 until 2009\, Mr. Gröhe briefly served as Minister of State at the Federal Chancellery under Chancellor Angela Merkel. \nDuring his time in office as Federal Minister of Health\, Mr. Gröhe focused heavily on global health issues. In March 2016\, Mr. Gröhe was appointed by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to the High-Level Commission on Health Employment and Economic Growth\, which was co-chaired by presidents François Hollande of France and Jacob Zuma of South Africa. He later led Germany’s delegation to the 2016 High-Level Meeting on Ending AIDS in New York. \nSince March 2018\, Mr. Gröhe has been serving as deputy chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group. He is a senior fellow at the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs in New York and a senior advisor to the Berggruen Institute in Los Angeles. He holds a doctorate in Comparative Religion and a doctorate in Linguistics. His academic interests include democratic theory\, politics and religion\, and theories of secularism\, pluralism\, and cosmopolitanism. In the academic year 2017-18\, he was a visiting scholar at National Taiwan University and City University Hong Kong. Since then\, he has focused on the rise of China and what it means for the democracies in East Asia. Dr. Görlach is an honorary Professor of Ethics and Theology at Leuphana University in Lüneburg\, Germany. He is the Founder of the debate magazine The European\, which he also ran as its editor-in-chief from 2009 to 2015. Today\, he is an op-ed contributor to the New York Times\, Neue Zürcher Zeitung\, and the South China Morning Post. He is a columnist for the business magazines Wirtschaftswoche\, Deutsche Welle\, and Focus Online. He is a frequent commentator on German News Channel WELT TV. \n  \nDr. Daniel Ziblatt is the director of Harvard University’s Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies where he is also Eaton Professor of Government at Harvard University. He leads a research group based in Germany at the WZB Berlin Social Science Center. His research focuses on Europe and the comparative study of democracy. He is the author of four books\, including How Democracies Die (2018)\, co-authored with Steven Levitsky\, a New York Times best-seller and described by The Economist magazine as “the most important book of the Trump era.” The book has been translated into thirty languages. In 2023\, he published Tyranny of the Minority (w/ Steve Levitsky)\, an analysis of American democracy in comparative perspective\, also a New York Times bestseller. Prior to this\, he was the author of the prize-winning book Conservative Parties and the Birth of Democracy (Cambridge University Press\, 2017)\, a history of democracy in Europe\, in addition to a book on European state-building entitled Structuring the State (Princeton University Press\, 2006). Cultural\, ethnic\, religious\, and linguistic differences can make social cohesion difficult. Against this backdrop\, political and public institutions can foster solidarity across social groups. How do these different interest groups interact with public and political institutions? As polarization and populism reshape the political arena\, understanding the role of interest politics is critical. Independent courts\, political parties\, and a free press can play a critical role in this regard. Dr. Delia Baldassarri and Dr. Jan-Werner Müller will explore the forces promoting and disrupting social cohesion in today’s complex environment.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Delia Baldassari is Julius Silver\, Roslyn S. Silver\, and Enid Silver Winslow Professor in the Department of Sociology at New York University. She holds courtesy appointments in the Wilf Family Department of Politics and in the Management and Organizations Department at the Stern School of Business. Dr. Baldassarri earned a B.A. and a Ph.D. in Sociology and Social Research from the University of Trento\, Italy (2003; 2006)\, and a Ph.D. in Sociology from Columbia University (2007). Previously\, she was an Assistant Professor and later Associate Professor at Princeton University. \nDr. Baldassarri’s research interests are in the fields of Economic Sociology\, Political Sociology\, Social Networks\, and Analytical Sociology. Her current research projects include a study of the emergence of cooperation in complex societies\, focusing on the empirical case of ethnically heterogeneous communities and a book project\, Partisan Misfits\, that investigates the demographic and social network bases of partisanship in American public opinion. Dr. Baldassarri has received a few career awards\, including the Freeman Award\, given by the International Network of Social Network Analysis to distinguished scholars in the field of social networks\, the Andrew Carnegie Fellowship\, the Raymond Boudon Award for early career achievement from the European Academy of Sociology\, and the Hans L. Zetterberg Prize in Sociology. \nJan-Werner Müller studied at the Free University\, Berlin\, University College\, London\, St. Antony’s College\, Oxford\, and Princeton University. From 1996 until 2003 he was a Fellow at All Souls College\, Oxford; from 2003 until 2005 he was Fellow in Modern European Thought at the European Studies Centre\, St. Antony’s College. Since 2005 he has been teaching in the Politics Department\, Princeton University. \nDr. Müller has been a visiting fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg\, Berlin\, Collegium Helsinki\, the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna\, and a number of other institutes; he has also been a Member of the School of Historical Studies\, Institute of Advanced Study\, Princeton.  He has  taught as a visiting professor at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales\, Paris\, the Ludwig Maximilians-Universität in Munich\, American University\, Beirut\, the Law School of Haifa University\, the Humboldt Universität in Berlin\, and the Institut d’Etudes Politiques\, Paris.  He has delivered the Carlyle Lectures at Oxford and the Tanner Lectures at Cambridge; he also offered lectures on the European Union and democracy at the Collège de France in 2024. \nDr. Müller is a co-founder of the European College of Liberal Arts\, Berlin (ECLA; today: Bard Berlin)\, Berlin\, Germany’s first private\, English-speaking liberal arts college\, for which he served as founding research director.
