SUMMARY:New York: The Global Order in Transformation:  How Can and Will Europe Ensure Its Own Security and Promote Stability in the International System?
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The ACG and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung of New York will host a discussion and luncheon with Klaus Welle\, Special Adviser to the European Commissioner for Defense and Space\, Chair of the Academic Council of the Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies\, and former Secretary-General of the European Parliament. \nEurope’s security environment is undergoing significant change. Russia’s war against Ukraine\, wider geopolitical shifts\, and renewed investment in European defense are reshaping discussions about Europe’s role in regional and international security. Against this backdrop\, the roundtable will explore how a more capable and strategically engaged Europe can strengthen both regional and global security. The discussion will consider European rearmament\, transatlantic cooperation\, and Europe’s broader role in supporting international peace and security through the United Nations and other multilateral institutions. In particular\, the exchange will examine how Europe can exercise greater leadership in conflict prevention and mediation\, peacekeeping and peacebuilding\, the protection of human rights\, and the defense of the principles of the UN Charter. More broadly\, participants will consider how stronger defense capabilities can be combined with sustained diplomatic and multilateral engagement to promote stability in an increasingly complex international environment. Following introductory remarks by Klaus Welle\, participants will be invited to engage in an open roundtable discussion. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nKlaus Welle served as the Secretary-General of the European Parliament from 2009 to 2022. In May 2025\, he was appointed Special Advisor to the European Commissioner for Defense and Space. He is currently the Chairman of the Academic Council at the Martens Centre for European Studies (Brussels) and the inaugural ‘Leader in Residence’ at the Moynihan Center at the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership at The City College of New York. He is also a guest professor in practice at the London School of Economics and a visiting professor at KU Leuven. \nEarlier in his career\, Mr. Welle served in various roles at the European Parliament\, including Head of the Cabinet of the President (2007-2009)\, Director-General for Internal Policies (2004-2007)\, and Secretary-General for the European People’s Party (EPP) in Parliament (1999-2003). He also served as the Secretary-General for the EPP and the European Union of Christian Democrats (EUCD)\, as well as the Head of the European and Foreign Policy Department at the CDU Central Office. \nMr. Welle holds a degree in Economics from the University of Witten/Herdecke and is the recipient of grants from the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes (German Academic Scholarship) and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

She is the author of numerous books and scholarly articles on European politics and political development\, the left\, fascism\, populism\, and the fate of democracy. Dr. Berman’s forthcoming book is entitled: The Political Consequences of Economic Ideas: Neoliberalism\, the Left\, and the Fate of Democracy (Oxford 2027). She has also published in a wide variety of non-scholarly publications\, including the New York Times\, The Wall Street Journal\, Washington Post\, Foreign Affairs\, VOX\, The Guardian\, and Dissent. She is on the boards of The Journal of Democracy\, Political Science Quarterly\, and Persuasion. Dr. Berman holds an Honorary Doctorate from Uppsala University in Sweden. \nDr. Alexander Görlach is an Adjunct Professor at NYU Gallatin School where he teaches democratic theory. Prior to that\, he had various positions as visiting scholar and as fellow at Harvard University in the United States\, and Cambridge University and Oxford University in the United Kingdom. He was a senior fellow to the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs in New York and is a senior advisor to the Berggruen Institute in Los Angeles. Dr. Görlach holds a ThD in comparative religion and a PhD in linguistics. His academic interests include democratic theory\, politics and religion\, and theories of secularism\, pluralism and cosmopolitanism. In the academic year 2017-18 he was a visiting scholar at National Taiwan University and City University Hong Kong. Since then\, he focuses on the rise of China and what it means for the democracies in East Asia. \nDr. Görlach is an honorary professor of ethics and theology at Leuphana University in Lüneburg\, Germany. In addition\, he is the founder of the debate-magazine The European\, that he also ran as its editor in chief from 2009 to 2015. Today\, he serves as an op-ed contributor to the New York Times\, Neue Zürcher Zeitung\, and the South China Morning Post. He is a columnist for the business magazine Wirtschaftswoche\, Deutsche Welle and Focus Online. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The ACG and the Robert Bosch Fellowship Alumni Association will host a discussion and luncheon with La Neice Collins\, (2004-2005 Robert Bosch Fellowship Alum) Program Manager\, Advocacy and Social Impact for the United Nations; Ambassador Florian Laudi\, Deputy Permanent Representative of Germany to the United Nations; and Rafael Peralta\, North American Director of the United Nations Environment Programme. \nThis event is only open to members. \nLa Neice Collins is responsible for Public Information and Multimedia at the United Nations\, currently serving as the Program Manager\, Advocacy and Social Impact. Ms. Collins brings over 20 years of experience in communications\, advocacy\, and development\, having served in several UN offices including New York\, Geneva\, Bangkok\, and Vienna\, most recently serving as the Spokesperson for the 80th President of the UN General Assembly. She has also worked as a gender focal point for the Department of Global Communications (DGC) and has experience with issues related to youth engagement\, sustainable development\, human rights\, and peacebuilding. Prior to joining the UN\, Ms. Collins was an award-winning television and radio producer in New York\, Washington\, DC\, Los Angeles\, Berlin\, Türkiye and Iraq. She has also worked as a strategic partner manager for news partnerships at Facebook\, where she focused on news integrity\, news literacy\, and building sustainable revenue models for media organizations. Ms. Collins holds a Master of Science degree from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism and a degree in political science and mass communications from the University of California\, Berkeley. \nAmbassador Florian Laudi has served as Deputy Permanent Representative of the Federal Republic of Germany to the United Nations since July 2026. Ambassador Laudi joined the Federal Foreign Office in 2002. Before taking up his new post\, Ambassador Laudi served as the Director for the United Nations and Counterterrorism at the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin since 2022. From 2003 to 2005\, Ambassador Laudi served at the German Embassy Kabul\, Afghanistan and was in charge of constitutional reform and police reconstruction. From 2005 to 2008\, Ambassador Laudi worked on Middle East issues (Iraq\, Iran\, sanctions) at the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin. Between 2008 and 2012\, he was assigned Permanent Mission of Germany to the United Nations in New York\, covering non-proliferation and disarmament issues\, including the Iranian nuclear file. From 2012 to 2016\, Ambassador Laudi was Deputy European Correspondent at the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin. From early 2017 to 2019 he Laudi led the Brexit team at the German Permanent Representation to the European Union in Brussels\, serving as Brexit Delegate of the Federal Government. From 2019 to 2020 Ambassador Laudi was the Special Envoy for Ukraine and Head of the Ukraine Task Force in the Federal Foreign Office\, from 2020 to 2021 Head of Division for the United Nations Security Council\, General Assembly\, Peacekeeping\, incl. while Germany was a non-permanent member. Ambassador Laudi obtained his law degree at the University of Passau\, Germany and the Universidade Católica Portuguesa\, Portugal. His practical legal traineeship led him to courts\, public authorities and law firms in Hamburg\, Germany; Lisbon\, Portugal and Milano\, Italy. He is married\, with two children. \nRafael Peralta is the Director for the New York Office and North America from July 2026. Mr. Peralta previously served as UNEP’s Regional Director for North America from July 2023\, and as UNEP’s Chief of Staff from April 2021\, having previously worked as Acting Chief of Staff and as Deputy Chief of Staff. Mr. Peralta has over 20 years’ experience at the United Nations and beyond\, working at the intersection of sustainable development\, peace and security. Prior to joining UNEP\, Mr. Peralta served as Senior Political Affairs Officer in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations in New York from 2015 to 2018\, working in support of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic. Earlier\, he worked in West Africa and the Sahel supporting political process in the region\, as well as on post-conflict stabilization in Somalia and Haiti. His expertise includes international diplomacy\, inter-agency UN coordination\, environmental management and management of large organizations. Before joining the United Nations\, Mr. Peralta worked with international organizations in Amman\, Pristina and Sarajevo in different capacities. SUMMARY:New York: The Anatomy of a Mirage: Wirecard and  the Vulnerability of Modern Financial Systems
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The ACG and the Robert Bosch Fellowship Alumni Association will host a discussion with James Freis\, Founder of Market Integrity Solutions and former CEO of Wirecard. \nJames H. Freis\, Jr. has pursued a career dedicated to promoting the integrity of the global financial markets.  He currently leads Market Integrity Solutions\, a consulting firm providing executive advice on global financial regulation\, good governance\, and innovative technology solutions; and is Chairman of CRINDATA\, a fintech startup providing risk management solutions for outsourcing and incident reporting by financial institutions. \nFrom 2014 through 2020 Mr. Freis was Managing Director\, Chief Compliance Officer\, and Group Anti-Money Laundering Officer of the Deutsche Börse Group\, Europe’s largest provider of systemically significant financial market infrastructures.  In June 2020\, he was asked to join the management board of the FinTech payments services provider\, Wirecard AG\, to professionalize the company and oversee its regulated businesses.  Within his first day\, he exposed internal fraud\, was promoted to CEO\, and then initiated a global restructuring and eventual insolvency proceedings of what had been a blue-chip company.  From 2007 to 2012\, Mr. Freis was Director (CEO) of the United States Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN)\, the lead U.S. Government official for anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing requirements\, and head of the country’s financial intelligence unit (FIU).  Earlier in his career\, he worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York\, the Bank for International Settlements in Basel\, Switzerland\, and the law firm Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton. Mr. Freis is a graduate of Georgetown University\, earned his Juris Doctor from Harvard University\, and is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charter holder. SUMMARY:New York: Germany's Foreign and Security Policy Today:  Navigating the Polycrisis and a  Fractured Transatlantic Relationship
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The ACG and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation will host a discussion and reception with Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer\, Chairwoman of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and former Federal Minister of Defense of Germany. \nThe international environment is very different today than it was in the immediate post-World War II era as Konrad Adenauer was navigating myriad challenges. Today\, the international order faces pressures on more fronts than at almost any point since then. Armed conflicts have reached a record level as Russia’s illegal war of aggression in Ukraine rages on\, military conflict intensifies in the Middle East\, and instability continues to spiral in Sudan\, the Sahel\, and elsewhere. At the same time\, the international community is struggling to address the effects of climate change\, the risk of future pandemics\, energy and economic insecurity\, and rapid technological change – including advances in artificial intelligence and autonomous weapons. Any of these challenges alone would put significant pressure on the multilateral system. Their combination raises a broader question about whether an order designed in the twentieth century is still equipped to meet the demands of the twenty-first. \nTensions are also playing out in the transatlantic relationship – which for decades has been a central pillar of the Western security order in general and for Germany in particular. Since returning to office\, the Trump administration has challenged several long-standing assumptions about the transatlantic partnership. For one\, Washington has put renewed pressure on European allies to increase defense spending and has raised questions about the extent of future American security commitments. More broadly\, the administration has taken a more transactional approach to alliances. Meanwhile in Europe\, far-right\, nationalist\, and Euroskeptic parties are gaining ground\, and their growing electoral support is increasingly influencing mainstream political debate. \nAs the United Nations’ second-largest contributor\, Europe’s largest economy\, and NATO’s most significant European member\, inter alia\, Germany’s decisions on multilateralism\, defense\, security\, and European integration have far-reaching repercussions. In this time of crisis and geopolitical recalibration\, how can – and should – Germany and Europe respond? What lessons from Konrad Adenauer’s leadership can be applied to today’s challenging times?[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
