Prior to his nomination\, Ambassador Braun was State Secretary of the Federal Foreign Office from 2011 to 2014. Between 2009 and 2011\, he served as the Director-General for Management of the German Foreign Office. From 2003 to 2005\, he was Deputy Foreign and Security Adviser to the Federal Chancellor. Former diplomatic postings include Beirut\, London\, Bujumbura\, Washington\, and Paris. He also served as the Chief of Staff to the Foreign Minister from 1992 to 1994. From 2005 to 2008\, he was on a leave of absence from the diplomatic service as Corporate Senior Vice President for policy and external relations of Siemens AG. In March 2008\, Ambassador Braun was named Research Professor for Global Studies and Diplomacy at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Ambassador Braun studied Economics and History in Tübingen and New York and completed a doctorate at SUNY Stony Brook before entering the Foreign Service in 1981. Ambassador Braun was awarded an Honorary Citizenship of Washington\, DC\, in 2002. He is Grand Officer of the National Order of the French Legion D’Honneur\, bearer of the Grand Cross of the Italian Order of Merit and further international distinctions\, as well as a member of the Knights of the Order of St. John.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

He served as Secretary of State for Federal and European Affairs at the Hessian State Chancellery and Commissioner (Bevollmächtigter) of the State of Hesse to the Federation from 1999 to 2003 and as State Councillor to the Senator of Finance of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen from 1995 to 1999. Before that\, he held miscellaneous functions in the public sector. He was the first Christian Democrat to serve as Minister-President of NRW since 1966\, a position he held from 2005 to 2010. He was also a Member of the Parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia from 2000 to 2012 and Chairman of the Parliamentary Group of the CDU from 2000 to 2005. As Minister-President\, he coped successfully with the onset of the global financial crisis by gradually reducing subsidies for the coal industry\, preventing the closure of an automobile plant in his state\, and committing to job-saving measures. Before focusing his political work on North Rhine-Westphalia\, Dr. Rüttgers held various posts in German federal politics. Between 1987 and 2000\, he was a Member of the German Bundestag. From 1991 to 1994\, Dr. Rüttgers was the First Secretary of the CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group. In 1994\, he was appointed Federal Minister for Education\, Science\, Research\, and Technology by then-Chancellor Helmut Kohl. Dr. Rüttgers currently serves on the Boards of several foundations\, including the Konrad Adenauer Foundation. He is Chairman of the Board of Stiftung Bundeskanzler-Adenauer-Haus and President of the German branch of the Jerusalem Foundation. Mrs. Groden-Kranich originally trained as a bank clerk at Landesbank Rheinland-Pfalz\, now known as Rheinland-Pfalz Bank (LBBW Group)\, and worked as an investment advisor at the bank from 1987 to 2013. Since 1994\, she has been a member of the Mainz-Hechtsheim local council in an advisory capacity and a member of the Mainz City Council since 1999. She was a local representative for Mainz-Hechtsheim from 2004 to July 2014. Mrs. Groden-Kranich is Deputy Chairwoman of the Mainz-Bingen County branch of the German Red Cross\, Chairwoman of the Mainz-Hechtsheim local branch of the German Red Cross\, Chairwoman of the St. Pancratius Community and Church Building Association\, and a member of the Mainz Cathedral Building Society and of the Board of Trustees of the Ingelheim Further Education Centre (WBZ) at the Fridtjof Nansen Academy.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Prior to this\, he was Head of the Division for International Economic and Monetary Policy\, IMF\, and OECD Affairs. From 2003 to 2004\, he was Head of the Division for Business Cycle Analysis. As Chief Economic Adviser to the FDP in the German Bundestag from 1999 to 2003\, Dr. Diekmann was in charge of a broad range of economic issues that were decided upon in the German Bundestag\, including: competition policy\, public procurement\, international trade policy\, regulation of service professions\, labor market reforms\, market regulation\, and fiscal policy. In addition\, he served as an expert to the Parliamentary Study Commission on Globalization. As Deputy Head of Division responsible for fiscal policy and macroeconomic cooperation (from 1997 to 1998) and for strategic questions of economic policy (from 1998 to 1999)\, he designed guiding principles for economic policy formation in Germany and drafted speeches for the Minister. With regard to international economic and monetary policy\, Dr. Diekmann gained profound knowledge in analysis and negotiations serving as an Adviser to the Division for International Monetary Relations and EMU\, as well as Deputy Head of the Division for the Economics of Development Cooperation\, UNCTAD\, and World Bank. Prior to this\, he was posted in Geneva as Second Secretary at the German Permanent Mission\, advising on UN/ECE and GATT. Dr. Diekmann started his career in 1989 as an Adviser on the economics of environmental protection policy in the Division for Structural Policy within the Ministry of Economics.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

His books include Imitation and Politics: Redesigning Modern Germany and The Enlargement of the EU and NATO: Ordering from the Menu in Central Europe. Dr. Jacoby has published articles in many journals\, including World Politics\, Comparative Politics\, Comparative Political Studies\, Politics and Society\, The Review of International Political Economy\, The Review of International Organizations\, and The British Journal of Industrial Relations. Dr. Jacoby previously was an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Grinnell College (1995-2000) and has been a Visiting Professor in Amsterdam\, Barcelona\, Bonn\, Berlin\, Brussels\, Copenhagen\, Cagliari\, and at the EUI in Florence. He received a Ph.D. in Political Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1996 and a B.A. in European Studies from Brigham Young University. \nDr. Harold James is a Senior Fellow at the Transatlantic Academy and the Claude and Lore Kelly Professor in European Studies\, a Professor of History and International Affairs\, and Director of the Program in Contemporary European Politics and Society at Princeton University. He studies economic and financial history and modern German history\, and is writing a history of the International Monetary Fund. Dr. James was educated at Cambridge University (Ph.D. in 1982) and was a Fellow of Peterhouse for eight years before going to Princeton University in 1986. His books include A German Identity\, 1770-1990 (1989)\, International Monetary Cooperation Since Bretton Woods (1996)\, The End of Globalization: Lessons from the Great Depression (2001)\, Making the European Monetary Union (2012)\, and The Euro and the Battle of Ideas (2016\, with Jean-Pierre Landau\, and Markus K. Brunnermeier). He is also Marie Curie Visiting Professor at the European University Institute. \nGideon Rachman is a Bosch Public Policy Fellow at the Transatlantic Academy\, and has served as Chief Foreign Affairs Columnist for the Financial Times since July 2006. He joined the FT after a 15-year career at The Economist\, which included spells as a foreign correspondent in Brussels\, Washington\, and Bangkok. He also edited The Economist’s business and Asia sections. His particular interests include American foreign policy\, the European Union\, and globalization. Mr. Rachman is the author of Easternization: Asia’s Rise and America’s Decline From Obama to Trump and Beyond (2017).[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

He also leads the German Free Democrats’ (FDP’s) delegation. He is a member of the International Trade Committee in the European Parliament. Until 2014\, Graf Lambsdorff served as a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Committee for Culture and Education. He has focused on European Union enlargement and the United Nations\, while actively engaging in democracy support policies by leading EU election observation missions to several countries in Asia and Africa. Graf Lambsdorff joined the German Foreign Service in 1995. He served on the Russia Desk at the German Federal Ministry for Foreign Affairs\, and worked in the Press Office of the German Embassy in Washington\, DC\, from 2000 to 2003 and on the Policy Planning Staff from 1997 to 2000. He is the co-founder of the Atlantic Initiative Germany and the German-Turkish Foundation\, and is a member of Atlantik-Brücke. He studied History\, Constitutional Law\, and International Relations at Bonn University and Georgetown University.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

He is responsible for the Directorates General Markets and Information Technology. Prior to taking on his current position\, Mr. Wuermeling\, who has a Ph.D. in Law\, held a variety of executive-level posts in the financial and insurance industries as well as in politics. From 2011 until his departure for the Bundesbank\, Mr. Wuermeling was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Association of Sparda-Banken in Frankfurt am Main. Prior to that\, he was a member of the Executive Board of the German Insurance Association (Gesamtverband der Deutschen Versicherungswirtschaft) for around three years. From 2005 to 2008\, Mr. Wuermeling was State Secretary for European Affairs at the Federal Ministry for Economics and Technology\, where he was also responsible for coordinating European policy matters. Prior to this\, he was a member of the European Parliament (CSU) from 1999 to 2005. Mr. Buhrow holds a Master’s degree in History and Political Science from the University of Bonn. In 1978\, he worked at the local newspaper Bonner General-Anzeiger. In 1985\, he volunteered at the largest television station in North Rhine-Westphalia\, WDR. Since 1986\, he was the Reporter\, Editor\, and Bureau Chief of the shows “Aktuelle Stunde” and “West 3 Aktuell.” After that\, he worked as a Reporter and Editor for Germany’s leading newsmagazine\, “Tagesschau.” In the run-up to the 1992 Presidential Election\, Mr. Buhrow became the ARD correspondent in Washington\, DC. Between January 2000 and 2002\, Mr. Buhrow worked as a correspondent at the ARD bureau in Paris. In July 2002\, he took over from Claus Kleber as chief of the ARD bureau in Washington. In September 2006\, he replaced Ulrich Wickert as the host of ARD’s flagship newsmagazine\, “Tagesthemen.” Also in 2006\, Mr. Buhrow published a book with Sabine Stamer about his years in the United States titled Mein Amerika\, Dein Amerika (My America\, Your America). \nJörg Schönenborn has been Television Director of WDR and Coordinator of Television Film at ARD since May 2014. Mr. Schönenborn studied Journalism and Politics. From 1997 to 2002\, he headed the WDR TV Current Affairs editorial group. From 2002 to 2014\, he was WDR Television Editor-in-Chief and Director of the Politics and Current Affairs program group. Under his direction\, a series of successful formats were developed\, including “hart aber fair\,” “Markencheck\,” “Wahlarena\,” and “Sport inside” on WDR Television. Mr. Schönenborn regularly presented election broadcasts on the 1st channel and the “ARD Presseclub.” For his reporting on the arson attack in Solingen\, he was recognized in 1993 and 1994 with the Telestar Prize and the Axel Springer Prize for Television Journalism. In 2005 and 2009\, as presenter of the ARD program “Wahlarena\,” he was nominated for the German Television Prize. In 2011\, as presenter of “Die Lange Obama Nacht – Halbzeit für den Präsident” he received the RIAS Television Prize. \nWith special thanks to Dr. Richard M. Mr. Frei practiced law from 2001 to 2002\, and from 2002 to 2004\, he served as a personal assistant to the Minister for State and European Affairs at the Baden-Württemberg State Ministry. He became the Mayor of Donaueschingen in 2004\, serving until 2013. From 1999 to 2004\, he was a member of the Bad Säckingen Town Council and Chairman of the CDU Parliamentary Group on the Bad Säckingen Municipal Council. His work focuses on sustainable development in the energy and transportation sector\, as well as urban sustainability and resilient cities. In particular\, he is leading the efforts by Ecologic Institute in the Emerging Leaders in Environmental and Energy Policy Network (ELEEP). He is also coordinating Post-Carbon Cities of Tomorrow (POCACITO) in the U.S. and Germany and the European research project Post-Carbon Cities in Europe: A Long-Term Outlook. In 2004\, Mr. Gruenig received his degree in Economics from the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. The main focus of his studies was natural resource economics and auction theory. Mr. Gruenig has lived and worked in Germany\, the United States\, Iceland\, and Japan. He is a founding member of the European Institute for Sustainable Transport (EURIST)\, a member of the Sustainability Advisory Board for NaturEnergiePlus\, and a member of the Consumer Research Network run by the German Federal Ministry for Justice and Consumer Protection (BMJV). Mr. Gruenig coauthored the book Low-Carbon Energy Security from a European Perspective with Patrizia Lombardi in 2016.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

She has also reported on terrorism for The New York Times\, The International Herald Tribune\, and NPR\, and she is the co-author of The Eternal Nazi\, Children of Jihad\, and Islam. She was one of two reporters who broke the story of Khaled el Masri’s rendition case and worked on a series called “Inside the Jihad\,” where she and her colleagues interviewed members of radical jihadist organizations all over the world. Ms. Mekhennet was a 2012 Nieman Fellow at Harvard University\, and she has been a visiting fellow at the Weatherhead Center for International Policy at Harvard\, the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS)\, and the Geneva Center for Security Policy. The daughter of a Turkish mother\, and a Moroccan father\, she was born and educated in Germany. He is the former International Economics Correspondent for the National Journal\, a former Senior Transatlantic Fellow at the German Marshall Fund\, and a former Senior Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations\, where he is a member. Mr. Stokes is author of the recent Pew Research Center studies “Europeans Face the World Divided\,” “Euroskepticism Beyond Brexit\,” “Germany and the United States: Reliable Allies\,” and “Americans\, Japanese: Mutual Respect 70 Years After the End of WWII.” Mr. Stokes is a graduate of Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies. Born in Schönebeck\, East Germany\, Mr. Gill worked for three years as a plumber before attending the Theological Seminary of the Protestant Church in Berlin-Brandenburg. After the fall of the Berlin Wall\, he was among those maintaining the extensive files of the GDR’s Ministry of State Security\, the Stasi. In 1990\, he was Chairman of the Normannenstrasse Citizens’ Committee at the headquarters of the Ministry of State Security\, then Head of Administration of the Parliamentary Special Committee for the dissolution of the GDR Ministry of State Security/Office of National Security. From 1990 to 1992\, he was Spokesman and Head of Division of the Federal Commissioner for the Files of the State Security Service of the former GDR under Joachim Gauck. Mr. Gill studied Law at Freie Universität Berlin from 1992 to 1996 and went on to receive his Master of Laws from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia in 1998. He then interned at the United States Congress in Washington\, DC. From 2000 to 2001\, Mr. Gill worked as a Desk Officer at the Federal Ministry of the Interior\, then as a Desk Officer at the Office of the Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information in Berlin from 2001 to 2003. From 2004 to 2012\, he served as the Deputy Representative of the Council of the Protestant Church in Germany (EKD) to the Federal Republic of Germany and the EU. Before his assignment as Consul General in New York\, Mr. Gill was State Secretary and Head of the Office of the Federal President from 2012 to 2017. He was a delegate to the American-German Young Leaders Conference in Nashville in 1992.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Prior to this\, he was the Head of the Policy and Counseling Department at the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung from 2013 to 2016. During this time\, his main focus was on political planning and strategy\, analysis\, and counseling political parties\, as well as addressing populism. From 2006 to 2012\, Mr. Lange headed the Ukraine office of the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung and also taught Political Science and International Relations at the University of Greifswald\, the Department of International Relations at the State University of St. Petersburg\, and the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. Before joining the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung\, Mr. Lange worked for the CDU/CSU faction in the German Bundestag\, and from 2003 to 2006\, he was with the Robert Bosch Foundation in St. Petersburg\, Russia. Mr. Lange studied Political Science\, Communications\, and Computer Science after completing his military service in the Bundeswehr\, where he had assignments in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo. \n  \nJeffrey Rathke is a Senior Fellow and Deputy Director of the Europe Program at CSIS. Previously\, he served as Director of the State Department Press Office\, from May 2014 to June 2015 (and acting Deputy Spokesperson in April and May). He joined the Foreign Service in 1991 and retired in June 2015. Mr. Rathke served in Kuala Lumpur as Counselor for Political Affairs from 2011 to 2014. Prior to that\, he was Deputy Director of the Private Office of the NATO Secretary General in Brussels. He also served in Berlin as Minister-Counselor for Political Affairs from 2006 to 2009. His Washington assignments have included Deputy Director of the Office of European Security and Political Affairs (EUR/RPM) and Duty Officer in the White House Situation Room and State Department Operations Center. Mr. Rathke was a Weinberg Fellow at Princeton University from 2003 to 2004\, winning the Master’s in Public Policy Prize. He served at the U.S. Embassy in Dublin from 2001 to 2003\, covering multilateral politics during Ireland’s tenure on the UN Security Council. From 1999 to 2001\, he was posted in Moscow and was responsible for relations with the Russian legislative branch in the Political Section. He was assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Berlin from 1994 to 1996 and helped open the U.S. Embassy in Riga from 1992 to 1994. He previously headed the public-policy representation of Deutsche Bank in Berlin and was the Managing Director of the Alfred Herrhausen Gesellschaft\, the International Forum of Deutsche Bank. Early in his career\, he served as Special Assistant for Europe to Federal Chancellor Helmut Schmidt. He was the Director General of the German Foreign Ministry and held senior staff positions with Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher – when he was deeply involved in negotiations on German unification – and with Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel\, when he worked toward a solution to the Balkan crisis. As Permanent Representative and Ambassador to the United Nations in New York\, he negotiated the first four UN resolutions on the Iranian nuclear issue\, which became the foundation for the so-called 3+3 Iranian nuclear deal\, accomplished in 2014. Ambassador Matussek sits on a number of boards\, including the Deutsche Gesellschaft für die Vereinten Nationen (United Nations Association of Germany); Institute for Strategic Dialogue in London; Internationaler Wirtschaftssenat e.V. She is also a nonresident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution and co-chairs its Hewett Forum on Post-Soviet Affairs. During the 2015-2016 academic year\, she was a fellow at the Transatlantic Academy of the German Marshall Fund. From 2004 to 2006\, she was the National Intelligence Officer for Russia and Eurasia at the National Intelligence Council.  From 1999 to 2001\, she served in the Office of Policy Planning at the U.S. Department of State. Dr. Stent’s academic work focuses on the triangular political and economic relationship between the United States\, Russia\, and Europe. Her publications include: Russia and Germany Reborn: Unification\, the Soviet Collapse\, and the New Europe (Princeton University Press\, 1999); From Embargo to Ostpolitik: The Political Economy of West German-Soviet Relations\, 1955-1980 (Cambridge University Press\, 1981); Putin’s World (2014); and “Putin’s Power Play in Syria: How to Respond to Russia’s Intervention” (Foreign Affairs\, January/February 2016). Her latest book is The Limits of Partnership: U.S.-Russian Relations in the Twenty-First Century (Princeton University Press\, 2014)\, for which she won the American Academy of Diplomacy’s Douglas Dillon prize for the best book on the practice of American diplomacy. She was a member of the senior advisory panel for NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander in Europe for Admiral James Stavridis and General Philip Breedlove. She is a contributing editor to Survival and is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Cold War Studies\, World Policy Journal\, Internationale Politik\, and Mirovaia Ekonomika i Mezhdunarodnie Otnosheniie. She has served on the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council for Russia and Central Asia\, and she is a Trustee of the Eurasia Foundation.
