Armin Laschet\, Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia.  \nRSVP (acceptances only) to the American Council on Germany at 212-826-3636 or events@acgusa.org. \nArmin Laschet has been the Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia since June 2017. Prior to this\, he was the Chairman of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in the North Rhine-Westphalian State Parliament. Since 2012\, he has also served as one of five Deputy Chairmen of the CDU. Under the leadership of Jürgen Rüttgers\, former Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia\, Minister-President Laschet served as the State Minister for Generations\, the Family\, Women\, and Integration from 2005 until 2010\, and as State Minister for Federal Affairs\, Europe\, and Media as of 2010. He was a member of the European Parliament from 1999 to 2005 and a member of the German Bundestag from 1994 to 1998. Minister-President Laschet studied law and politics at the University of Munich and the University of Bonn\, and then started his career as a journalist.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Prior to this\, he worked for the United Nations in New York and for the European Commission. \nHe is a fully qualified German lawyer and holds a Master’s degree in European law from Stockholm University as well as a degree in international law from the University of Amsterdam.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:NYC: Setting Priorities in the Grand Coalition: Advancing Gender Politics in Germany
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The ACG and Cultural Vistas will host a political salon with Caren Marks\, Parliamentary State Secretary for the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs\, Senior Citizens\, Women and Youth.  \nRegistration is needed in order to attend. Please register through Eventbrite. \nCaren Marks has been the Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs\, Senior Citizens\, Women and Youth since December 2013 and member of the German Bundestag since 2002. In this role\, she focuses on social policy such as promoting work-life balance\, expanding childcare\, providing inclusive education\, strengthening civic engagement\, and achieving gender equality.  From 2008 to 2013\, she served as the Spokesperson of the Working Group on Family Affairs\, Seniors\, Women and Youth of the Social Democrats (SPD) in the German Bundestag. Since December 2005\, she has been a member of the SPD’s Executive Board. \nHaving joined the Social Democrats in 1998\, Ms. Marks has served in various roles including Chair of the SPD group in Wedemark\, member of the SPD Executive Committee in Hannover\, Member of the Hannover Regional Assembly\, and member of the City Council of Wedemark. She completed studies at the Universität Hannover in 1998 and later worked as a research assistant at the University. \n\nPolitical Salon: Promoting Dialogue Across Generations. This series brings together a diverse group of younger and mid-career professionals for informal\, open discussions on a range of current political\, economic\, and social topics in an increasingly interconnected global environment – with an emphasis on issues of concern for the transatlantic agenda. Speakers share brief remarks and engage in a dynamic discussion with participants. Each salon includes refreshments and networking opportunities.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
