DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Boston Warburg Chapter will host a discussion with Tobias David\, Chief of Staff to the Lord Mayor of Leipzig on “Remembering the Fall of the Berlin Wall: From German Unity to a New Beginning.” \nTobias David\, born in 1973\, grew up in Leipzig (former GDR/East Germany) and spent most of his school years under the conditions of the GDR dictatorship. Even as a teenager he was involved in opposition groups under the protection of the Catholic Church and became politically active early on. The Peaceful Revolution of 1989\, driven by the peace and civil rights movement\, had a lasting impact on his life. After studying political science and communication\, he worked for many years as managing director of a communications agency. In 2004 he moved to the Saxon State Parliament as advisor to the Vice-President. Since 2008\, he has been the closest strategic advisor to the Mayor of the City of Leipzig. The Peaceful Revolution of 1989 – which ultimately led to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany – began in Leipzig. Today Leipzig is not only one of the largest cities in Germany but also the fastest growing German city. \nThis event is being held under the auspices of Deutschlandjahr USA 2018/2019 – the Year of German-American Friendship\, a comprehensive and collaborative initiative funded by the German Federal Foreign Office\, implemented by the Goethe-Institut\, and with support from the Federation of German Industries (BDI). DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Nashville Warburg Chapter and the Sister Cities of Nashville will host a discussion and reception with David Gill\, German Consul General in New York on “The Path to Freedom and German Unity: The Peaceful Revolution and the Fall of the Berlin Wall 30 Years On.” \nDavid Gill was born in 1966 in Herrnhut\, Saxony\, in former East Germany. He was denied a higher education by the Communist regime for political reasons. Instead\, he trained and worked as a plumber before joining a preparatory protestant school and later the theological seminary of the Protestant Church in Berlin-Brandenburg. In 1990\, he was the chairman of Normannenstrasse Citizens’ Committee which initially oversaw the dissolution of the Ministry of State Security at the Stasi headquarters and then served as the secretary of the Special Committee for the dissolution of the Stasi of the East German Parliament. \nAfter Germany’s unification\, Mr. Gill became spokesman and head of the research division of the Federal Commissioner for the Stasi-Files before studying law in Berlin and Philadelphia. After holding positions in the Federal Ministry of the Interior and at the Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information in Berlin\, he served as the Deputy Representative of the Council of the Protestant Church in Germany to the Federal Republic of Germany and the European Union. During Federal President Joachim Gauck’s term from 2012-2017\, he was state secretary and chief of staff to the President. Since August 2017\, he has been the German Consul General in New York. \nOn Mr. Gill’s first visit to the United States in 1992\, Mr. Gill participated in the American Council on Germany’s American-German Young Leaders Conference in Nashville.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

His book\, The End of History and the Last Man\, was published by Free Press in 1992 and has appeared in over twenty foreign editions. Other books include America at the Crossroads: Democracy\, Power\, and the Neoconservative Legacy\, Our Posthuman Future: Consequences of the Biotechnology Revolution\, Trust: The Social Virtues and the Creation of Prosperity\, and Political Order and Political Decay. His most recent book is Identity: The Demand for Dignity and the Politics of Resentment\, which was published in German by Hoffmann and Campe last year as Identität: Wie der Verlust der Würde unsere Demokratie gefährdet. \nHe received his B.A. from Cornell University in classics\, and his Ph.D. from Harvard in Political Science. Er war bis 2015 beim Wall Street Journal\, wo er 15 Jahre lang in verschiedenen Positionen als Reporter und Redakteur in den USA und Europa tätig war. In seiner zwei Jahrzehnte währenden Karriere berichtete er von der vordersten Front von einigen der prägenden politischen und wirtschaftlichen Geschichten unserer Zeit. Sie ist die erste chinesische App\, die weltweit erfolgreich ist. Inzwischen nutzen rund 800 Millionen Menschen TikTok. Mit der TikTok-App können Nutzer kurze Videoclips aufnehmen\, bearbeiten und mit anderen Nutzern teilen. \nTikTok ist eine Social Media Anwendung\, die in erster Linie zur Unterhaltung dient und vor allem bei Teenagern beliebt ist. Gleichwohl hat der amerikanische Präsident TikTok zum Risiko für die nationale Sicherheit der USA erklärt. Die amerikanische Regierung wirft Bytedance\, der chinesischen Muttergesellschaft von TikTok vor\, Nutzerdaten an die chinesischen Behörden weiterzugeben. Bytedance weist die Vorwürfe zurück. TikTok soll in den USA verboten werden\, wenn das Unternehmen nicht verkauft wird. Als mögliche Käufer werden unter anderem Microsoft\, Oracle und Walmart gehandelt. Ein Verbot von TikTok in den USA hätte aufgrund der globalen Dominanz der Betriebssysteme von Apple und Google wahrscheinlich weltweite Auswirkungen. \nDas Gespräch findet auf Englisch statt. Die Regulierung solcher Veröffentlichungen gestaltet sich jedoch schwierig. \nDigitale Wahlsysteme sind erschreckend anfällig für Angriffe und Manipulationen. Für die Glaubwürdigkeit der Demokratie ist das keine gute Nachricht. \nDie Lösung ist sowohl digital als auch analog. In unserer Expertenrunde diskutieren wir über diese Gefahren sowie über Maßnahmen und deren Auswirkungen. Er studierte Philosophie und Physik an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin und wurde 2008 an der Universität Bielefeld promoviert. \nWolfram von Heynitz\, in den vergangenen zwei Jahren leitete er den Koordinierungs­stab für Cyber-Außenpolitik und Cyber­sicherheit im Auswärtigen Amt und ist seit Kurzem Stellvertretender Generalkonsul der Bundesrepublik Deutschland in New York. Im Diplomatischen Dienst war er seit 2003 in den Auslandsvertretungen Deutschlands in Azerbaijan\, Tel Aviv und Dublin tätig. Von 1997 bis1999 hat von Heynitz im Bundespräsidialamt gearbeitet. Sokol is the President of the American Council on Germany (ACG). Previously\, he served as President and CEO of the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh and prior to that he was the Vice President and Director of Programs at the ACG. Earlier in his career\, Dr. Sokol served as the Deputy Director of the Aspen Institute Berlin\, was the Head of the Project Management Department at the Bonn International Center for Conversion GmbH (BICC)\, and a Program Officer in the Berlin office of the German Marshall Fund of the United States. \nHe holds a Doctorate in Law and Policy from Northeastern University as well as an M.A. in International Relations and International Economics from the Johns Hopkins University’s Paul Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and a B.A. from Wesleyan University. For over a decade prior\, Ms. Clüver Ashbrook served as the executive director of the Future of Diplomacy Project at the Harvard Kennedy School in Cambridge\, Massachusetts. The research program\, which she co-founded\, examines the challenges to negotiation and statecraft in the 21st century\, including the impact of technology on foreign policy. In addition\, Ms. Clüver Ashbrook directed a Harvard research program on Europe and transatlantic relations from 2018 to 2021. Before that\, she served on the management board of the European Policy Centre (EPC) in Brussels and worked as both a consultant and senior journalist at Roland Berger Strategy Consultants in France and China. She began her career as a television journalist at CNN International in Atlanta and London. \nShe holds an undergraduate honors degree in international relations and French civilization from Brown University\, a master’s degree in European studies from the London School of Economics\, and a master’s degree in public administration from the Harvard Kennedy School where she was a Hauser Fellow in Non-Profit Management. \n  \nJoel Brenner is a senior research fellow at MIT’s Center for International Studies\, where his work concerns intelligence studies\, international conflict in the gray zone between war and peace\, and the protection of the electronic networks that control critical infrastruc­ture. \nIn government\, Mr. Brenner was Senior Counsel at the National Security Agency (2009-2010)\, advising Agency leadership on the public-private effort to create better Internet security; the head of US counterintelligence under the Director of National Intelligence (2009-2010); and NSA’s Inspector General (2002-2006)\, responsible for that agency’s top-secret internal audits and investigations. Early in his career\, he was a prosecutor in the Justice Department’s Anti­trust Division. He has extensive trial and arbitration experience in private practice. \nMr. Brenner is a director of Nokia of America Corporation and of Endgame Systems LLC and a member of the Intelligence Community Studies Board. He holds a JD from Harvard Law School\, a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics\, and a BA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is an advisor to the American Bar Association’s Standing Committee on Law and National Secu­rity and the author of America The Vulnerable: Inside the New Threat Matrix of Digital Espionage\, Crime and Warfare\, in paperback as Glass Houses: Privacy\, Secrecy\, and Cyber Insecurity in a Transparent World.\nPaul Taylor has over 30 years of experience leading the delivery of some of the most demanding national security programs in the UK\, operating at the very highest levels of government. As a result\, he is uniquely qualified to understand the evolving threat environment\, as well as having an exceptional track record of driving and delivering change in complex organizations. Mr. Taylor’s contribution to the world of science and technology was recognized by his election as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2013\, where he now chairs the SME Leaders’ program and sits on the Engineering Policy\, Enterprise\, and Audit Committees. He also sits on the Advisory Board of the Imperial College Institute of Security Science and Technology\, and the Advisory Board of the Strathclyde University Security and Resilience Center. \nIn 2020\, Mr. Taylor was appointed as a Non-Executive Director for Morgan Stanley International\, where he sits on the Audit\, Risk\, Nominations\, and Remunerations Committees. He is also a member of the Technology Advisory Board for NatWest Bank. Having received his BA in Economics from King’s College Cambridge in 1989\, he had the good fortune to witness the end of the Cold War in Berlin\, where he began his postgraduate studies. He received his Ph.D. from the London School of Economics. From 1996 to 2009\, Dr. Tooze taught at the University of Cambridge\, where he was Reader in Modern History and Gurnee Hart fellow in History at Jesus College. After Cambridge\, Dr. Tooze was appointed to the Barton M. Biggs Professorship at Yale University\, where he succeeded Paul Kennedy as the Director of International Security Studies. In February 2011\, he served as Thomas Hawkins Johnson Visiting Professor in Military History at West Point. Dr. Tooze’s first book\, Statistics and the German State: The Making of Modern Economic Knowledge\, appeared in 2001; Wages of Destruction: The Making and Breaking of the Nazi Economy was published in 2006; Deluge: The Great War and the Remaking of the Global Order 1916-1931 in 2014; Crashed: How a Decade of Financial Crises Changed the World in 2018; and Shutdown: How Covid Shook the World’s Economy in 2021. This event is held in partnership with Freunde des American Council on Germany. \nStefan Kornelius leitet seit 2021 das Politik-Ressort der Süddeutschen Zeitung. Von 2000 an war er für die Außenpolitik verantwortlich. Zuvor arbeitete er als stellvertretender Leiter des Berliner Büros und berichtete während der Clinton-Präsidentschaft als Korrespondent aus Washington. Von 1991 bis 1996 war Herr Kornelius als Korrespondent im Bonner Bundesbüro der SZ für die Berichterstattung über Verteidigung und sicherheitspolitische Themen sowie über die CDU zuständig. Er absolvierte die Henri-Nannen-Journalistenschule und studierte an der Universität Bonn und der London School of Economics. Er ist Mitbegründer der Zeitschrift Medium Magazin. \nDr. Meike Zwingenberger ist seit 2013 Geschäftsführerin der Stiftung Bayerisches Amerikahaus gGmbH – Bavarian Center for Transatlantic Relations. Von 2007 bis 2014 leitete sie die Bayerische Amerika-Akademie\, und von 1997 bis 2006 war sie Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin bei der Ludwig-Maximilians Universität München. Er vertritt seinen Heimatwahlkreis Heilbronn seit 2017\, und von 2005 bis 2013 hatte er dieselbe Stelle. Er ist Europasprecher der FDP-Bundestagsfraktion und seit März 2022 Koordinator für die transatlantische Zusammenarbeit im Auswärtigen Amt. Er ist Mitglied des Heilbronner Stadtrats und zugleich Vorsitzender des FDP-Verbandes. Von Januar 2012 bis Dezember 2013 war er Staatsminister für Europa im Auswärtigen Amt und Beauftragter der Bundesregierung für die deutsch-französische Zusammenarbeit. Insbesondere war er verantwortlich für die Beziehungen zu den UN\, der Europäischen Union\, dem Europarat\, der OSZE und der NATO sowie für die bilateralen Beziehungen zu den Vereinigten Staaten und Kanada. Nach seinem Militärdienst studierte Herr Link Russisch und Französisch an den Universitäten Augsburg\, Lausanne und Heidelberg.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Liston\, US-Generalkonsul in München\, and Stefan Kornelius\, Ressortleiter Politik\, Süddeutsche Zeitung. \nTimothy E. Liston ist seit Ende Juli 2021 US-Generalkonsul in München und seit 2002 als Beamter des Auswärtigen Dienstes tätig. Er absolvierte zuletzt ein Jahr am National War College\, wo er einen Master of Science in National Security Strategy erwarb. Zuvor war er von 2016 bis 2020 stellvertretender Leiter des US-Konsulats in Ho-Chi-Minh-Stadt. Von 2013-2016 arbeitete er bei der Ständigen Vertretung der USA bei internationalen Organisationen in Wien\, wo er als stellvertretender Botschaftsrat für Angelegenheiten der Internationalen Atomenergiebehörde für die friedliche Nutzung der Kernenergie zuständig war und die JCPOA-Verhandlungen unterstützte. Zudem war Tim E. Liston in Washington in der Militärpolitik-Abteilung des Außenministeriums tätig und dort für Südostasien zuständig. Außerdem war er in der US-Botschaft in Hanoi\, in welcher er sich auf das Südchinesische Meer\, die vietnamesische Innenpolitik und politisch-militärische Fragen konzentrierte. Er war Handelsoffizier und Konsul für Politik & Militär bei den Botschaften in Berlin bzw. Vilnius. Vor seinem Eintritt in den Auswärtigen Dienst arbeitete er bei der RAND Corporation und war Stipendiat des Robert-Bosch-Instituts und Teilnehmer des Praktikumsprogramms des Deutschen Bundestags. Neben seinem Abschluss am National War College hat Tim E. Liston einen Master der School of International and Public Affairs der Columbia University und einen Bachelor der University of Wisconsin in Internationale Beziehungen und Germanistik. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The ACG and KPMG will host a breakfast briefing in Munich with Simone Menne\, President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Germany; Dr. Constanze Stelzenmüller\, Director Center on the US and Europe (CUSE) and Fritz Stern Chair at The Brookings Institution; and Ambassador Kurt Volker\, Senior International Advisor and Advisory Board Member at BGR Group; in conversation with Ambassador John B. Emerson\, former U.S. Ambassador to Germany\, Vice Chairman at Capital Group International\, and Chairman of the American Council on Germany. \n\nSimone Menne serves as the President of the American Chamber of Commerce Germany. She started her career for ITT\, later joining Deutsche Lufthansa. In 2012\, Ms. Menne was appointed CFO and stayed in this position till 2015. She worked as CFO at Boehringer Ingelheim from 2016 to 2017. In both companies\, she was responsible for the foundation of the digital lab. Ms. Menne serves as a non-executive board member for BMW\, Henkel\, Deutsche Post DHL\, JCI\, and Russell Reynolds. She also owns an art gallery in Kiel\, Germany. \n  \nDr. Constanze Stelzenmüller is an expert on German\, European\, and trans-Atlantic foreign and security policy and strategy. She is the director of the Center on the United States and Europe and the inaugural holder of the Fritz Stern Chair on Germany and trans-Atlantic Relations at Brookings. She held the Kissinger Chair on Foreign Policy and International Relations at the Library of Congress from October 2019 to March 2020 and served as the inaugural Robert Bosch Senior Fellow at Brookings from 2014 to 2019. \n  \nPrior to working at Brookings\, she was a senior transatlantic fellow with the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF)\, where she directed the influential Transatlantic Trends survey program. She also managed the “New Power\, New Responsibility” project. Her expertise includes trans-Atlantic relations\, German foreign policy\, NATO\, the European Union’s foreign\, security\, and defense policy\, international law\, and human rights. \n  \nAmbassador Kurt Volker provides strategic advice to BGR on a full range of international issues and is co-chair of BGR’s advisory board. He helps BGR clients develop and execute strategies to achieve success in key foreign markets and to navigate the complex business\, government\, think tank\, media\, and public policy environment in Washington. \n  \nAmbassador Volker is a leading expert in U.S. foreign and national security policy with 30 years of experience in various government\, academic\, and private sector capacities.  A former career member of the U.S. Senior Foreign Service\, he worked in official capacities for over 25 years under six presidential administrations. He was the U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations from 2017-2019 and US Ambassador to NATO from 2008-2009.   He currently serves on the advisory board of Augustus\, an artificial intelligence company\, and has previously served as a Director of CG Funds Trust and the Wall Street Fund.  Other Foreign Service assignments include working with Senator John McCain and the Secretary General of NATO. \n  \nAmbassador John B. Emerson (moderator) was named Chairman of the American Council on Germany at the Council’s Annual Members Meeting on January 17\, 2018. He is Vice Chairman at Capital Group International. Previously\, he was the U.S. Ambassador to Germany from 2013 to 2017. In 2015\, Ambassador Emerson received the State Department’s Sue M. Cobb Award for Exemplary Diplomatic Service\, an award given annually to one non-career Ambassador.
