As Permanent Representative and Ambassador to the United Nations in New York\, he negotiated the first four UN resolutions on the Iranian nuclear issue\, which became the foundation for the so-called 3+3 Iranian nuclear deal\, accomplished in 2014. Ambassador Matussek sits on a number of boards\, including the Deutsche Gesellschaft für die Vereinten Nationen (United Nations Association of Germany); Institute for Strategic Dialogue in London; Internationaler Wirtschaftssenat e.V. He previously headed the public-policy representation of Deutsche Bank in Berlin and was the Managing Director of the Alfred Herrhausen Gesellschaft\, the International Forum of Deutsche Bank. Early in his career\, he served as Special Assistant for Europe to Federal Chancellor Helmut Schmidt. He was the Director General of the German Foreign Ministry and held senior staff positions with Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher – when he was deeply involved in negotiations on German unification – and with Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel\, when he worked toward a solution to the Balkan crisis. As Permanent Representative and Ambassador to the United Nations in New York\, he negotiated the first four UN resolutions on the Iranian nuclear issue\, which became the foundation for the so-called 3+3 Iranian nuclear deal\, accomplished in 2014. Ambassador Matussek sits on a number of boards\, including the Deutsche Gesellschaft für die Vereinten Nationen (United Nations Association of Germany); Institute for Strategic Dialogue in London; Internationaler Wirtschaftssenat e.V. (World Economic Council) in Berlin; and Aspen Institute Germany. \nAbstract: The historical promises of European integration\, peace\, prosperity\, and a powerful voice in a globalized world may have lost some of their appeal. War to the east\, economic and social meltdown in the south\, millions of refugees\, and xenophobia and nationalism led to Brexit\, Le Pen\, and the Alternative for Germany (AfD)\, but have the elections in the Netherlands\, France\, and Germany turned the tide? DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Minneapolis Warburg Chapter and the Center for German and European Studies at the University of Minnesota will host a discussion with Professor Dr. Birgit Glorius\, Associate Professor for Human Geography of East Central Europe at Chemnitz University of Technology. \nThere is no charge to attend this event.\nThere is no need to register for this event. \nProf. Dr. Birgit Glorius works as associate professor for Human Geography of East Central Europe at Chemnitz University of Technology. She was trained in Geography\, Geology and Political Sciences at the universities of Erlangen-Nürnberg\, Würzburg and the University of Texas at Austin. She earned a diploma in Human Geography from the University of Würzburg and a doctoral degree from the University of Halle-Wittenberg. Her research interests and majority of publications are in the fields of international migration\, demographic change and geographies of education; most of her research is carried out in Eastern Germany\, Poland\, Bulgaria and the Western Balkans. Recent research projects include refugee reception in Europe\, concentrating on questions of local governance and local reception cultures; effects of the European financial and economic crisis on migratory processes from southern European countries; and return migration of Bulgarian graduates from studies abroad and mechanisms of knowledge transfer. Birgit is frequently asked to give expertise to federal and non-governmental institutions and receives invitations for academic keynotes on issues related to migration\, integration and social cohesion in Europe. \nAbstract: Mobility and migration to and within Europe represent the core of Prof. Glorius’ scholarly work\, and she will present an insight into this topic\, starting from post WWII migration and mobility processes to recent refugee inflows\, followed by the discussion of related questions such as dealing with diversity\, nation building and identity\, security issues\, European solidarity tackling those challenges\, and further development perspectives.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The Oppenheim Center seeks to provide new ideas for the continued development of European foreign\, security\, and defense policy and to give recommendations for Germany’s policies on Europe. Prior to this she was a program officer at the DGAP’s Future Forum Berlin\, temporarily heading the program from October 2013 until August 2014. Before joining DGAP she was an advisor on disarmament\, arms control\, and non-proliferation at the German Bundestag\, where she also worked on matters relating to German and European foreign and security policy. Between 2003 and 2011 she was a research assistant and lecturer to the chair of political science and contemporary history as well as in the program for North American studies at the University of Bonn\, held a teaching post at the University of Chemnitz\, and worked as a researcher at DGAP. Jana is an alumna of the ZEIT Foundation Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius and a member of the extended board of Women in International Security (WIIS.de). She was an associate at Stiftung Neue Verantwortung\, Berlin from October 2010 until October 2011. Jana studied political science\, international and European law\, and sociology at the University of Bonn and at Venice International University. Her doctoral degree was based on a thesis on the life and thought of John H.
