DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Los Angeles Warburg Chapter and the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) will host a luncheon discussion with Dr. Karen Donfried\, President of GMF.  \nThere will be a $49 charge for members and a $59 charge for nonmembers to attend this event. Validated parking available for $6.50 for the first two hours. RSVP here by November 12. \nDr. Karen Donfried is president of the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF)\, a non-profit organization dedicated to strengthening transatlantic cooperation.  Before assuming this position in April 2014\, Donfried was special assistant to the president and senior director for European affairs on the National Security Council at the White House.  Prior to that\, she served as the national intelligence officer for Europe on the National Intelligence Council.  Donfried first joined GMF in 2001 after having served as a European specialist at the Congressional Research Service. From 2003-2005\, she handled the Europe portfolio on the State Department’s Policy Planning Staff. She returned to GMF from 2005 to 2010\, first as senior director of policy programs and then as executive vice president. Donfried is a trustee of Wesleyan University\, her undergraduate alma mater.  She received her doctorate from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and a Magister from the University of Munich.  She is a Senior Fellow at Harvard University’s Center for European Studies and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

RSVP  here by November 13. \nDr. Timo Lochocki is the James K. Batten Visiting Professor for Public Policy at Davidson College for fall 2018\, teaching European and German politics. Before joining Davidson he was a transatlantic fellow with the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) based in Berlin and Paris; he is an expert on European party politics. His award-winning research focuses on the interplay between international policy challenges–e.g. Eurozone and immigration matters–and domestic party politics. He is also a lecturer on European Politics and Political Communication at Humboldt University Berlin and Bard College Berlin. He advises federal decision makers in Germany and regularly comments on German and European party politics for The Economist\, POLITICO Europe\, The New York Times\, The London Times and Zeit Online\, among others. Dr. Lochocki studied interdisciplinary social sciences in Germany\, Norway\, and the United States and holds a Ph.D. in comparative politics from Humboldt University Berlin. His doctoral thesis and first book explains varying electoral advances of right-wing populist parties in Europe. His second book\, published just last month\, offers strategies for the major parties to regain voters and the political center. From March 2011 to August 2016\, Techau was the director of Carnegie Europe in Brussels. Techau also served in the NATO Defense College’s Research Division in Rome from February 2010 until February 2011. He was director of the Alfred von Oppenheim Center for European Policy Studies at the German Council on Foreign Relations in Berlin between 2006 and 2010\, and from 2001 to 2006 he served at the German Ministry of Defense’s Press and Information Department. Techau holds an MA in political science from the Christian-Albrechts-Universität in Kiel\, Germany. He is an associate scholar at the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA) and an associate fellow at the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies (AICGS) in Washington\, DC. He lives with his family in Berlin. \n\nAbstract: Transatlantic Relations are in a rough spot two years after the election of Donald Trump\, and yet its fundamental question remains valid: Can Europe live at peace without the United States? This question is now all the more important\, given that America’s primary strategic concern is the balancing of China. Before her current position\, she most recently headed the political department\, where she was responsible for the front page and the political section. She has more than 10 years of experience in the business and political department. Ms. Schäuble has developed and continues to organize political conferences on a regular basis in cooperation with the Freie Universität Berlin and the Schwarzkopf-Stiftung. She earned her Master’s degree in Political Science at the University of Potsdam\, Germany. Her studies included one semester at American University in Washington\, DC\, where she took classes in American foreign policy and worked part time for the American Council of Young Political Leaders. In 2009 and 2010\, she was trained in the Media Manager Program of the publishing house Georg von Holtzbrinck. In 2006\, she was a Fellow of the Johanna Quandt Foundation for economic journalists. Prior to working at Brookings\, she was a senior transatlantic fellow with the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF)\, where she directed the influential Transatlantic Trends survey program. Her areas of expertise include: transatlantic relations; German foreign policy; NATO; the European Union’s foreign\, security\, and defense policy; international law; and human rights. Stelzenmüller is the former director of GMF’s Berlin office. From 1994 to 2005\, she was an editor for the political section of the German weekly DIE ZEIT\, where she had also served as defense and international security editor and covered human rights issues and humanitarian crises. From 1988 to 1989\, she was a visiting researcher at Harvard Law School. She has also been a GMF campus fellow at Grinnell College in Iowa\, a Woodrow Wilson Center public policy scholar in Washington\, D.C.\, and a member of the Remarque Forum—a conference series of the Remarque Institute at New York University. Stelzenmüller’s essays and articles\, in both German and English\, have appeared in a wide range of publications\, including Foreign Affairs\, Internationale Politik\, the Financial Times\, the International New York Times and Süddeutsche Zeitung. He currently holds the Max Weber Chair in German and European Studies at New York University. A past President of the German Studies Association\, she has also served on the Executive Boards of the International Association for the Study of German Politics and the German Studies Association\, as well as on selection committees for Fulbright\, the German Academic Exchange Service\, and the American Council of Learned Societies. A widely published journalist\, he is author of The End of Europe: Dictators\, Demagogues\, and the Coming Dark Age (Yale\, 2017)\, a correspondent for The Daily Beast\, and a columnist for Tablet. Mr. Kirchick’s writing has appeared in The Washington Post\, The Wall Street Journal\, The New York Times\, The Los Angeles Times\, Ha’aretz\, Newsweek\, Time\, Foreign Policy\, Foreign Affairs\, Slate\, and National Review\, among other publications. Her previous postings with the Federal Foreign Office include two years as the Ministry’s Research Coordinator on the Policy Planning Staff (2008-2010)\, a posting as Political Counselor in Ankara\, Turkey (2005-2008)\, and two years at the Division for Turkish Affairs (2003-2005). She has also served as Deputy Consul General in Guangzhou (Canton)\, China\, and as a political desk officer at the German Embassy in Tokyo. She first came to the United States to attend a summer program at the University of Delaware and later spent a year at Cornell University’s Asia Department. Ms. Barth holds a Master’s Degree in Chinese Studies (Sinology)\, Modern History\, and German Literature from Tubingen University\, Germany. He has been a member of the German Bundestag since 2009 and a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) since 1996. Mr. Beyer is also a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs\, where he serves as Special Rapporteur on Transatlantic Relations. He is Executive Vice President of the Southeast Europe Association. Prior to his current roles\, he served as Managing Chairman of the Heiligenhaus town branch of the CDU and a member of the Heiligenhaus town council from 2008 to 2009. In addition\, he was an elected member of the Executive Committee of the Mettmann county branch of the CDU. Before joining the public sector\, he worked as an attorney specializing in industrial property law in the Cologne office of Mayer Brown LLP\, the Los Angeles office of Murchison & Cumming LLP\, and the Chicago office of Brinks\, Hofer\, Gilson & Lione LLP.
