SUMMARY:Philadelphia: The German Dual Education System as a Model: The Potential Benefit to America’s Businesses and Young People
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Philadelphia Warburg Chapter and the German American Chamber of Commerce\, Philadelphia will host a discussion and luncheon with Christine Benz\, DBA\, Training Manager at TRUMPF Inc. \nThere will be no charge to attend.\nRSVP here or to Lauren Konyves ( LKonyves@mmwr.com or 215-772-7257 ) by March 18. \n  \nDr. Christine Benz\, initiated and oversees TRUMPF Inc.’s successful registered apprenticeship program\, and promotes dual education among businesses\, educators\, and legislators. She joined TRUMPF Inc. in May 2003\, initially working as an engineer in the Laser Development Department\, where she developed new laser designs. She then worked as a Manager of Project Engineering in the Customer Service group\, where she managed large-scale automation projects. In her current role as Training Manager\, she is responsible for providing TRUMPF customers with the knowledge they need to operate high-technology equipment successfully as well as for the continuous training and development of TRUMPF employees. She also serves as a member of Central Connecticut State University’s Industrial Advisory Board. Dr. Benz earned a B.S. in Micro- and Precision Engineering at the University of Applied Sciences in Munich\, Germany\, an M.S. in Technology Management at Central Connecticut State University\, and a D.B.A. in Organizational Leadership at North Central University. \nAbstract: The U.S. youth unemployment rate is twice as high as the national unemployment rate. America’s colleges have the lowest completion rate in the developed world. At the same time\, U.S. industries face a labor pool crisis. The skills gap will leave more than 2 million jobs vacant in the skilled manufacturing and information technology sector over the next decade. It is worth asking whether we are doing all we can to create opportunities for success for all young people while eliminating the skills gap to create a workforce that supports the growth of our economy. The Dual Education System is often cited for Germany’s economic success\, its low youth unemployment rate\, and low levels of earnings inequality. This talk will take a close look at Germany’s Dual Education System and the current state of the U.S. apprenticeship program\, with an emphasis on their advantages and opportunities.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Indianapolis: Towards Resilient Migration Governance in Europe?
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nThe Indianapolis Warburg Chapter of the American Council on Germany\, the Sagamore Institute\, IUPUI\, and Lutheran Child and Family Service will host a discussion and luncheon with Dr. Regine Paul\, Political Scientist at Bielefeld University and JFK Memorial Fellow at the Center for European Studies at Harvard University. \nThere will be no charge to attend. RSVP here by March 25. \nDr. Regine Paul is a political scientist at Bielefeld University and a JFK Memorial Fellow for 2017-18 at the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies at Harvard University. She earned a Ph.D. from the University of Bath/UK (2012) with a comparative study of labor migration regimes in Britain\, France\, and Germany. Her current research focuses on risk regulation and public management reforms in Europe. Dr. Paul co-chairs the European Integration & the Global Political Economy Research Network at the Council for European Studies. \nAbstract: Resilience is a new buzzword in the European Union’s external governance approach and is currently being probed as a new paradigm for migration governance\, too. During the refugee crisis\, efforts have been redoubled to carve out an approach that could ostensibly help address root causes of migration while also improving integration outcomes of new residents in host countries. Yet\, policy analysts and researchers are yet to elaborate on whether and how resilience assessments prominent in natural disaster relief or development aid can\, and indeed should\, be applied in migration governance. The talk addresses three questions: 1. What could resilience mean in the migration context? 2. How could resilience be assessed and improved? 3. What implications\, both for migration governance and for the position of migrants themselves\, would a shift to a resilience paradigm entail?[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Atlanta: Cyber Security Challenges Need a Global Approach
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Atlanta Warburg Chapter and the German American Chamber of Commerce will host a discussion and luncheon with Quirin Blendl\, Director of Cybersecurity and Digital Policy at VdTUV. \nThere will be no charge for ACG and GACC members and a $15 charge for nonmembers to attend. RSVP here by March 30. \nQuirin Blendl is currently the Director of Cybersecurity and Digital Policy at VdTUV (Association of TUVs). Previously\, he worked for the Federation of German Industries (BDI)\, where he oversaw “Cybersecurity and Industry 4.0” for over a year\, and the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) in Bonn. He received his MA in International Political Economics and Psychology from the University of Bonn in 2012. \nAbstract: Knowledge is power. This old saying determines the current digital paradigm shift. Digital business models and information technology drive innovation and global growth: Around 20\,000 new jobs in Germany every year. Access to data and competitive software coding has become key to market success. Nevertheless\, the overall societal relevance of the digitization predominates its economic potential. Resilient digital architectures and sustainable privacy standards are a fundamental challenge to protect citizens from technology and technology from citizens and itself. Cyber-attacks\, data infringements and mass surveillance challenge these pillars and boosts national security policies around the globe. Particularly\, the internet of things requires higher security standards and innovative regulation to maintain trust within this new technological environment. SUMMARY:Charlotte: Toward Resilient Migration Governance in Europe?
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Charlotte Warburg Chapter will host a discussion and luncheon with Dr. Regina Paul\, Political Scientist at Biefeld University and JFK Memorial Fellow a the Center for European Studies at Harvard University.  \nThere will be no charge for ACG Members and a $15 charge for nonmembers to attend this event. RSVP here by April 6. 3. What implications\, both for migration governance and for the position of migrants themselves\, would a shift to a resilience paradigm entail? \nThis program was made possible by a generous grant through the European Recovery Program – Transatlantic Encounters.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Charlotte: Developing Advanced Work-Based Higher Education – What Germany and the U.S. Can Learn from Each Other
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Charlotte Warburg Chapter will host a discussion and luncheon with Prof. Dr. Lukas Graf\, Assistant Professor of Educational Governance at the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin.  \nThere will be no charge for ACG Members and a $15 charge for nonmembers to attend this event. RSVP here by June 14. \n\n\n\n\nProf. Dr. Lukas Graf is Assistant Professor of Educational Governance at the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin. Until August 2017 he was a postdoctoral researcher at the School of Economics and Political Science at the University of St. Gallen\, Switzerland\, and Managing Director of the Swiss Leading House “Governance in Vocational and Professional Education and Training” – an international research cluster on the governance and inclusiveness of skill formation in Austria\, Denmark\, Germany\, the Netherlands\, and Switzerland. At the nexus of political economy\, sociology\, and educational science\, his research combines comparative and historical institutional and organizational approaches to analyze questions of educational governance and institutional change\, as well as of social inequality\, in Europe and beyond. He has published in leading journals in all three disciplines. His book The Hybridization of Vocational Training and Higher Education in Austria\, Germany\, and Switzerland (Budrich UniPress 2013) builds upon his dissertation\, which received the Best Dissertation Award from the Comparative and International Education Society (Higher Education Section) and the Ulrich-Teichler-Prize of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Hochschulforschung. Previously\, Lukas has held research posts at the University of Luxembourg and the WZB Berlin Social Science Center\, and he has been a visiting scholar at the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies in Washington D.C.\, the University of Vienna\, and the University of Berne. He holds a BA in Philosophy\, Politics\, and Economics from the University of East Anglia\, an MA in Global Political Economy from the University of Kassel\, and a PhD in Sociology from Freie Universität Berlin. \n\n\n\n\n\n  \nAbstract: In both Germany and the United States\, employers search for new strategies to recruit and train people in times of a dynamically evolving economy and rising educational expectations. In this context\, we observe the proliferation of work-based higher education programs in both countries. This development challenges the common classification found in the political economy and educational policy literature that distinguishes between collectively governed dual apprenticeships in Germany and market-driven on-the-job training in the US. This presentation proposes an alternative that identifies significant similarities in the governance mode of work-based higher education across the two countries. Based on expert interviews and document analysis\, this discussion focuses on complex multi-actor governance at the nexus of vocational training and higher education and explores consequences for contemporary policy-making in advanced skill formation. \n\n\n\n\n\nThis program was made possible by a generous grant through the European Recovery Program –Transatlantic Encounters. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Charlotte: Rising Anti-Semitism and Populism in Europe
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nThe Charlotte Eric M. Warburg Chapter of the American Council on Germany\, the Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte\, Temple Beth El\, and the American Jewish Committee will host a discussion with Stefan Schlüter\, Retired German Diplomat.  \nThere will be no charge to attend. RSVP here by October 14. \nMr. Schlüter has been engaged with the Jewish community for many years and strongly believes German diplomats have an obligation to reach out to Jewish communities due to the legacy of the Holocaust. After studying political science at the University of Hamburg\, Schlüter went to Israel as a 23-year-old in 1975 and lived on Kibbutz Ramat Rachel near Jerusalem. He joined the German Foreign Office in 1979\, and was sent to Buenos Aires\, where he met his wife\, and then Algiers before moving to Tel Aviv as spokesman for the German Embassy. While in Tel Aviv from 1986 to 1990\, his daughter was born. During diplomatic postings in Los Angeles (where is his son attended a synagogue preschool)\, New York as Deputy Consul General\, and San Francisco as Consul General\, Mr. Schlüter engaged in dialogue with Jewish organizations and at synagogues about Germany’s relationship with the Jewish people and organized several trips to Germany for rabbis. Since the summer of 2017\, he is a retired member of the German Foreign Office and currently serves as a Program Director at the Diplomatic Academy in Berlin. \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Tour: Stefan Schlüter is undertaking a two-week speaking tour of 11 cities in the southeastern and midwestern regions of the United States. The goal of this project is to engage communities in smaller U.S. cities to examine German-Jewish themes\, to openly discuss Germany today in the context of its history\, and to provide opportunities to learn about contemporary Germany. Thematically\, a number of topics will be covered during the speaking tour: Jewish life in Germany\, Germany’s coming to terms with its past\, German-Israeli relations\, rising anti-Semitism and populism in Europe. In addition\, the meetings will provide opportunities to discuss these and a wider range of topics\, such as transatlantic relations\, migration issues and refugee policy\, developments in the EU\, Brexit\, and the Middle East conflict. \n\n\n\n\n\nFunding for this project was provided by the German Federal Foreign Office and Allianz and is administered under the auspices of the Deutschlandjahr USA 2018/2019 – Year of German-American Friendship. \n\n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
