There will be no charge to attend. RSVP to Brandon Hale at BrandonH@ihcindy.org by October 22. \nMr. Schlüter has been engaged with the Jewish community for many years and strongly believes German diplomats have an obligation to reach out to Jewish communities due to the legacy of the Holocaust. After studying political science at the University of Hamburg\, Schlüter went to Israel as a 23-year-old in 1975 and lived on Kibbutz Ramat Rachel near Jerusalem. He joined the German Foreign Office in 1979\, and was sent to Buenos Aires\, where he met his wife\, and then Algiers before moving to Tel Aviv as spokesman for the German Embassy. While in Tel Aviv from 1986 to 1990\, his daughter was born. During diplomatic postings in Los Angeles (where is his son attended a synagogue preschool)\, New York as Deputy Consul General\, and San Francisco as Consul General\, Mr. Schlüter engaged in dialogue with Jewish organizations and at synagogues about Germany’s relationship with the Jewish people and organized several trips to Germany for rabbis. Since the summer of 2017\, he is a retired member of the German Foreign Office and currently serves as a Program Director at the Diplomatic Academy in Berlin. \n\nAbout the Tour: Stefan Schlüter is undertaking a two-week speaking tour of 11 cities in the southeastern and midwestern regions of the United States. The goal of this project is to engage communities in smaller U.S. cities to examine German-Jewish themes\, to openly discuss Germany today in the context of its history\, and to provide opportunities to learn about contemporary Germany. Thematically\, a number of topics will be covered during the speaking tour: Jewish life in Germany\, Germany’s coming to terms with its past\, German-Israeli relations\, rising anti-Semitism and populism in Europe. In addition\, the meetings will provide opportunities to discuss these and a wider range of topics\, such as transatlantic relations\, migration issues and refugee policy\, developments in the EU\, Brexit\, and the Middle East conflict. \nFunding for this project was provided by the German Federal Foreign Office and Allianz and is administered under the auspices of the Deutschlandjahr USA 2018/2019 – Year of German-American Friendship[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Since August 2001\, Dr. Hüther has also been an Honorary Professor at the European Business School in Oestrich-Winkel. In the academic year 2016-17\, he was Gerda Henkel Adjunct Professor in the Department of German Studies at Stanford University. In 1999\, he joined DekaBank as Chief Economist and\, starting in 2001\, additionally served as Division Manager of economics and communication. In 1995\, he was appointed Secretary General of the German Council of Economic Advisers. Upon completion of his Doctorate in Economics\, in 1991\, Dr. Hüther became a member of the research staff of the Council of Experts for the Evaluation of Macroeconomic Development. From 1982 to 1987\, he studied economics as well as medieval and modern history at the Justus-Liebig University in Gießen. Dr. Hüther and his team carry out research on pressing issues including the eurozone’s future governance design\, digitalization\, German Ordnungspolitik\, the past economic crisis\, and capital market supervision. He is a member of the Board of Atlantik-Brücke. He was awarded the German Federal Cross of Merit (Bundesverdienstkreuz).[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

In its role as a think-tank and advisory body\, the KAS is responsible for drafting timely academic analysis and making policy recommendations for German political leaders. Dr. Caro is in charge of monitoring U.S. think tanks and universities with a special emphasis on U.S. foreign and transatlantic policy\, U.S. positions on key international issues and the American perceptions of current developments in the EU. Between 2010 and 2015 Dr. Caro was the Coordinator for European Policy in the headquarters of the KAS in Berlin. In this context\, Dr. Caro coordinated publications and organized conferences on current issues regarding the future of the European integration and Germany’s EU policy. In addition\, in the Spring and Fall of 2013 she was a visiting lecturer at the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle in Paris and at the Ecole Normale Supérieure (ENS) in Lyon\, a French grande école. Dr. Caro began her career in the KAS as a research fellow in its Paris office from 2007 to 2010\, focusing on expanding Franco-German institutional relations. Prior to that she was an Assistant Professor at the University of Dresden where she taught French Studies and French-German history (2002-2007). Dr. Caro’s analyses and policy papers appear frequently in KAS periodicals and in different German and French journals. Since 2010 she is a frequent participant in seminars and panel discussions at think tanks\, governmental institutions and universities. She is also a frequent commentator on European issues for German\, French and international media. Dr. Caro attended the Université Sorbonne-Nouvelle in Paris\, where she obtained a master’s degree in German Studies as well as a joint Ph.D. in German and French Studies in cooperation with the University of Dresden. Yet\, both sides are still working on a withdrawal agreement as well as a framework for their future relationship. Border and trade issues are among the biggest points of contention. The lack of consensus in the U.K. regarding the best Brexit strategy further complicates tense negotiations between London and the 27 other EU member states. The outcome of this process will be of crucial importance for the future of the EU and the transatlantic partnership. From 2005 to 2013\, he was Der Tagesspiegel’s U.S. Correspondent\, Washington Bureau Chief\, and White House Correspondent. Beginning when Barack Obama took office in 2009\, Dr. von Marschall was the only German newspaper correspondent in the White House Press Corps. From 2003-2005\, she handled the Europe portfolio on the State Department’s Policy Planning Staff. She returned to GMF from 2005 to 2010\, first as senior director of policy programs and then as executive vice president. Donfried is a trustee of Wesleyan University\, her undergraduate alma mater.  She received her doctorate from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and a Magister from the University of Munich.  She is a Senior Fellow at Harvard University’s Center for European Studies and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

His award-winning research focuses on the interplay between international policy challenges–e.g. Eurozone and immigration matters–and domestic party politics. He is also a lecturer on European Politics and Political Communication at Humboldt University Berlin and Bard College Berlin. He advises federal decision makers in Germany and regularly comments on German and European party politics for The Economist\, POLITICO Europe\, The New York Times\, The London Times and Zeit Online\, among others. Dr. Lochocki studied interdisciplinary social sciences in Germany\, Norway\, and the United States and holds a Ph.D. in comparative politics from Humboldt University Berlin. His doctoral thesis and first book explains varying electoral advances of right-wing populist parties in Europe. His second book\, published just last month\, offers strategies for the major parties to regain voters and the political center. Ms. Schäuble has developed and continues to organize political conferences on a regular basis in cooperation with the Freie Universität Berlin and the Schwarzkopf-Stiftung.
