Prior to working at Brookings\, she was a senior transatlantic fellow with the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF)\, where she directed the influential Transatlantic Trends survey program. Her areas of expertise include: transatlantic relations; German foreign policy; NATO; the European Union’s foreign\, security\, and defense policy; international law; and human rights. Stelzenmüller is the former director of GMF’s Berlin office. From 1994 to 2005\, she was an editor for the political section of the German weekly DIE ZEIT\, where she had also served as defense and international security editor and covered human rights issues and humanitarian crises. From 1988 to 1989\, she was a visiting researcher at Harvard Law School. She has also been a GMF campus fellow at Grinnell College in Iowa\, a Woodrow Wilson Center public policy scholar in Washington\, D.C.\, and a member of the Remarque Forum—a conference series of the Remarque Institute at New York University. Stelzenmüller’s essays and articles\, in both German and English\, have appeared in a wide range of publications\, including Foreign Affairs\, Internationale Politik\, the Financial Times\, the International New York Times and Süddeutsche Zeitung. Her dissertation\, “Direkte Demokratie in den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika\,” was published in 1994 by Nomos. She is also a frequent commentator on American and European radio and television\, including Presseclub (ARD)\, National Public Radio\, and the BBC. Stelzenmüller is a governor of the Ditchley Foundation and a fellow of the Royal Swedish Society for War Sciences. She has worked in Germany and the United States\, and speaks English\, French\, German\, and Spanish. Sokol\, President of the American Council on Germany. \nDr. Christian Martin is a professor of political science at the University of Kiel\, Germany. He currently holds the Max Weber Chair in German and European Studies at New York University. Dr. Martin has studied political science at the University of Konstanz and holds a doctorate from there (2002). Dr. Martin was a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Konstanz and at the Max-Planck-Institute in Jena (2003–2004). He was an assistant professor at the University of Hamburg (2004–2008) and a Visiting Assistant Professor at Northwestern University (2008–2011). Dr. Martin’s research interests focus on the political conditions and consequences of globalization and regional integration. He has published\, inter alia\, on the effects of globalization for electoral participation and on the incentive to adopt more proportional voting systems in a highly globalized environment. Ing.) from the Technische Universität München. His wife\, Maria Béatrice Gräfin Arco\, was born in Paris and holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the Leopold-Franzens-Universität Innsbruck\, Austria. Their hobbies include hunting\, fishing and skiing. In 1982\, Riprand Graf Arco entered the family business\, which includes farming\, timber farming\, breweries\, venture capital\, and commercial real estate.  In 1986\, he founded American Asset Corporation\, a full-service real estate investment\, development and management firm\, specializing in office parks\, dominant retail centers\, business parks and large planned unit developments in mid-size cities in the southeast United States.  The Company owns and manages a real estate portfolio exceeding 5.8 million square feet of property with planned development on land in inventory of over 7.2 million square feet\, Riprand and Maria Béatrice spend their time traveling back and forth between Munich and New York.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Mushaben is a Curators’ Professor of Comparative Politics and former Director of the Institute for Women’s and Gender Studies (2002-2005) at the University of Missouri – St. Louis. Fluent in German\, her teaching centers on comparative public policy\, the European Union\, women’s leadership\, citizenship\, immigration\, mega-cities\, and sustainability issues. Her research covers new social movements\, youth protest\, German unification and identities\, gender\, ethnicity and welfare issues\, EU migration and integration studies. A past President of the German Studies Association\, she has also served on the Executive Boards of the International Association for the Study of German Politics and the German Studies Association\, as well as on selection committees for Fulbright\, the German Academic Exchange Service\, and the American Council of Learned Societies. She is a current Editorial Board member for German Politics & Society\, German Politics\, and Femina Politica. Having received a 1999 Trailblazer Award and the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Research Creativity in 2007\, Dr. Mushaben is a three-time Alexander von Humboldt Fellow\, a former Ford Foundation Fellow\, German Marshall Fund grantee\, and DAAD recipient. She has held guest-scholar posts at the Academy for Social Sciences (GDR)\, the Center for Youth Research (GDR)\, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences\, and the Center for Transdisciplinary Gender Research. Before\, he served as his paper’s Bureau Chief in Washington DC (2007-2014) and as DIE ZEIT’s Senior Political Editor and Managing Editor of the political section in Hamburg (1998-2007). Mr. Klingst studied law in Freiburg\, Geneva and Hamburg and worked at the Institute of International Affairs at the University of Hamburg. There he also taught German Constitutional Law. In 2006\, he was a fellow at the Center for European Studies at Harvard University\, where he lectured on the German reform process\, on the Transatlantic relations\, terrorism\, and Europe’s engagement in the Middle East. Before assuming his position with DIE ZEIT in 1996\, Mr. Klingst worked as a journalist for the North German Public Broadcasting Corporation NDR and the weekly paper Deutsches Allgemeines Sonntagsblatt. He wrote on domestic topics as well as on international affairs. He covered the Balkan wars\, the Israel-Palestine conflict\, the transatlantic relationsship\, and\, since 2015\, the refugee crisis. In 2012 Mr. Klingst was honored with the George F. Kennan editorial award and in 2016 with the German Reporter Award. In September Reclam published his book “Menschenrechte” (human rights) and in September 2018 “Trumps Amerika. Reise in ein weißes Land” (“Trump’s America. A journey to a white man’s land”). DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Nashville Warburg Chapter will host a breakfast briefing with Martin Klingst\, Senior Political Correspondent with DIE ZEIT.  \nThere will be no charge to attend this event. RSVP here by May 22. There is paid parking in the building available at a cost of $12 for two hours. \nMartin Klingst is a Senior Political Correspondent with DIE ZEIT in Berlin\, Germany. Before\, he served as his paper’s Bureau Chief in Washington DC (2007-2014) and as DIE ZEIT’s Senior Political Editor and Managing Editor of the political section in Hamburg (1998-2007). Mr. Klingst studied law in Freiburg\, Geneva and Hamburg and worked at the Institute of International Affairs at the University of Hamburg. There he also taught German Constitutional Law. In 2006\, he was a fellow at the Center for European Studies at Harvard University\, where he lectured on the German reform process\, on the Transatlantic relations\, terrorism\, and Europe’s engagement in the Middle East. Before assuming his position with DIE ZEIT in 1996\, Mr. Klingst worked as a journalist for the North German Public Broadcasting Corporation NDR and the weekly paper Deutsches Allgemeines Sonntagsblatt. He wrote on domestic topics as well as on international affairs. He covered the Balkan wars\, the Israel-Palestine conflict\, the transatlantic relationsship\, and\, since 2015\, the refugee crisis. In 2012 Mr. Klingst was honored with the George F. Kennan editorial award and in 2016 with the German Reporter Award. In September Reclam published his book “Menschenrechte” (human rights) and in September 2018 “Trumps Amerika. Reise in ein weißes Land” (“Trump’s America. A journey to a white man’s land”). The latter features eight Trump voters from very different walks of life.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Los Angeles Warburg Chapter of the American Council on Germany and Atlantik-Brücke will host a breakfast briefing with Sigmar Gabriel\, Former Vice-Chancellor and Foreign Minister in his new role as Chairman of the Atlantik-Brücke. \nSigmar Gabriel was Federal Minister for the Economy and Energy from 2013 to 2017 as well as Vice-Chancellor from 2013 to 2018 and served as Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2017 to 2018. On June 26\, 2019\, he was elected Chairman of Atlantik-Brücke. Mr. Gabriel has been politically active since 1976. Born in Goslar\, he began his political career in the youth organization of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and joined the SPD in 1977. Two years later\, Mr. Gabriel joined the ÖTV union\, and membership in IG Metall and Arbeiterwohlfahrt (AWO)\, a social welfare organization\, followed. Trained as a high school educator\, he assumed various responsibilities in adult education and became a member of Lower Saxony’s parliament over the course of the 1980s. During the subsequent decade\, among other positions\, he held the post of chair of the environmental committee of Lower Saxony’s parliament and was a member of the SPD executive committee. He served as prime minister of Lower Saxony from 1999 to 2003\, and he has been a directly elected member of Germany’s Bundestag since 2005\, taking over the post of Federal Minister for the Environmental that same year. Mr. Gabriel\, who represents the Salzgitter-Wolfenbüttel district\, occupied the position of SPD chairman from 2009 until 2017. \nValet parking is available at $12 per car. Kornblum has a long record of service in the United States and Europe both as a diplomat and as a businessman. He is recognized as an eminent expert on U.S.-European political and economic relations\, in particular in Central and Eastern Europe. He served as the U.S. ambassador to Germany from 1997 to 2001. Before that\, he occupied a number of high-level diplomatic posts\, including U.S. assistant secretary of state for European affairs\, special envoy for the Dayton Peace Process\, U.S. ambassador to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (Helsinki Process)\, deputy U.S. ambassador to NATO\, and U.S. minister and deputy commandant of forces in divided Berlin. From 2001 to 2009\, he was chairman of Lazard Freres Germany. He currently serves as senior counsellor to the international law firm Noerr LLP and as a senior adviser to the worldwide consultancy Accenture. Mr. Kornblum has also served on a number of supervisory and advisory boards including those of Thyssen-Krupp\, Technologies AG\, Bayer AG\, Russell Reynolds\, and Motorola Europe. He is a member of the boards of the American Chamber of Commerce in Germany\, the American Academy in Berlin\, the Deutsche Oper in Berlin\, and of numerous nonprofit organizations on both sides of the Atlantic. He received a B.A. from Michigan State University in 1964\, and he has been the recipient of many awards\, including a Knights Cross of the Order of Merit from Germany and an Order of Merit from Austria.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

His work focuses on European foreign policy issues\, transatlantic relations\, and Iran. Since the end of 2000\, he has been the owner of Wirtschaft am Wasserturm – Political Consultancy\, Project Development\, and Training. In addition\, he is a non-resident fellow at Carnegie Europe in Brussels and an associate fellow of the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP)\, as well as a member of the Team Europe of the European Commission. He was a lecturer at Georgetown University (2015/16)\, at Tehran University (2012/13)\, and at the Willy Brandt School of Public Policy at Erfurt University (2005-2011). \nFrom 2009 to 2011\, he was a fellow of the New Leadership Foundation (Stiftung Neue Verantwortung) in Berlin\, and in 2002/2003 of the Robert Bosch Foundation’s Post-Graduate Program in International Affairs. Dr. Adebahr studied Political Science (International Relations)\, Philosophy\, Public Law\, and International Economics in Tübingen\, Paris\, and at the Free University Berlin\, where he graduated in 2001 before receiving his PhD in 2008 with an analysis of the work of the EU Special Representatives.
