Ing.) from the Technische Universität München. His wife\, Maria Béatrice Gräfin Arco\, was born in Paris and holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the Leopold-Franzens-Universität Innsbruck\, Austria. Their hobbies include hunting\, fishing and skiing. In 1982\, Riprand Graf Arco entered the family business\, which includes farming\, timber farming\, breweries\, venture capital\, and commercial real estate.  In 1986\, he founded American Asset Corporation\, a full-service real estate investment\, development and management firm\, specializing in office parks\, dominant retail centers\, business parks and large planned unit developments in mid-size cities in the southeast United States.  The Company owns and manages a real estate portfolio exceeding 5.8 million square feet of property with planned development on land in inventory of over 7.2 million square feet\, Riprand and Maria Béatrice spend their time traveling back and forth between Munich and New York.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Her research covers new social movements\, youth protest\, German unification and identities\, gender\, ethnicity and welfare issues\, EU migration and integration studies. A past President of the German Studies Association\, she has also served on the Executive Boards of the International Association for the Study of German Politics and the German Studies Association\, as well as on selection committees for Fulbright\, the German Academic Exchange Service\, and the American Council of Learned Societies. She is a current Editorial Board member for German Politics & Society\, German Politics\, and Femina Politica. Having received a 1999 Trailblazer Award and the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Research Creativity in 2007\, Dr. Mushaben is a three-time Alexander von Humboldt Fellow\, a former Ford Foundation Fellow\, German Marshall Fund grantee\, and DAAD recipient. A widely published journalist\, he is author of The End of Europe: Dictators\, Demagogues\, and the Coming Dark Age (Yale\, 2017)\, a correspondent for The Daily Beast\, and a columnist for Tablet. She has also served as Deputy Consul General in Guangzhou (Canton)\, China\, and as a political desk officer at the German Embassy in Tokyo. Mr. Beyer is also a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs\, where he serves as Special Rapporteur on Transatlantic Relations. He is Executive Vice President of the Southeast Europe Association. Prior to his current roles\, he served as Managing Chairman of the Heiligenhaus town branch of the CDU and a member of the Heiligenhaus town council from 2008 to 2009. In addition\, he was an elected member of the Executive Committee of the Mettmann county branch of the CDU. Before joining the public sector\, he worked as an attorney specializing in industrial property law in the Cologne office of Mayer Brown LLP\, the Los Angeles office of Murchison & Cumming LLP\, and the Chicago office of Brinks\, Hofer\, Gilson & Lione LLP. Before\, he served as his paper’s Bureau Chief in Washington DC (2007-2014) and as DIE ZEIT’s Senior Political Editor and Managing Editor of the political section in Hamburg (1998-2007). Mr. Klingst studied law in Freiburg\, Geneva and Hamburg and worked at the Institute of International Affairs at the University of Hamburg. There he also taught German Constitutional Law. In 2006\, he was a fellow at the Center for European Studies at Harvard University\, where he lectured on the German reform process\, on the Transatlantic relations\, terrorism\, and Europe’s engagement in the Middle East. Before assuming his position with DIE ZEIT in 1996\, Mr. Klingst worked as a journalist for the North German Public Broadcasting Corporation NDR and the weekly paper Deutsches Allgemeines Sonntagsblatt. He wrote on domestic topics as well as on international affairs. He covered the Balkan wars\, the Israel-Palestine conflict\, the transatlantic relationsship\, and\, since 2015\, the refugee crisis. In 2012 Mr. Klingst was honored with the George F. Kennan editorial award and in 2016 with the German Reporter Award. In September Reclam published his book “Menschenrechte” (human rights) and in September 2018 “Trumps Amerika. Reise in ein weißes Land” (“Trump’s America. A journey to a white man’s land”). Before\, he served as his paper’s Bureau Chief in Washington DC (2007-2014) and as DIE ZEIT’s Senior Political Editor and Managing Editor of the political section in Hamburg (1998-2007). Mr. Klingst studied law in Freiburg\, Geneva and Hamburg and worked at the Institute of International Affairs at the University of Hamburg. There he also taught German Constitutional Law. In 2006\, he was a fellow at the Center for European Studies at Harvard University\, where he lectured on the German reform process\, on the Transatlantic relations\, terrorism\, and Europe’s engagement in the Middle East. Before assuming his position with DIE ZEIT in 1996\, Mr. Klingst worked as a journalist for the North German Public Broadcasting Corporation NDR and the weekly paper Deutsches Allgemeines Sonntagsblatt. He wrote on domestic topics as well as on international affairs. He covered the Balkan wars\, the Israel-Palestine conflict\, the transatlantic relationsship\, and\, since 2015\, the refugee crisis. In 2012 Mr. Klingst was honored with the George F. Kennan editorial award and in 2016 with the German Reporter Award. In September Reclam published his book “Menschenrechte” (human rights) and in September 2018 “Trumps Amerika. Reise in ein weißes Land” (“Trump’s America. A journey to a white man’s land”). DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Los Angeles Warburg Chapter of the American Council on Germany and Atlantik-Brücke will host a breakfast briefing with Sigmar Gabriel\, Former Vice-Chancellor and Foreign Minister in his new role as Chairman of the Atlantik-Brücke. \nSigmar Gabriel was Federal Minister for the Economy and Energy from 2013 to 2017 as well as Vice-Chancellor from 2013 to 2018 and served as Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2017 to 2018. On June 26\, 2019\, he was elected Chairman of Atlantik-Brücke. Mr. Gabriel has been politically active since 1976. Born in Goslar\, he began his political career in the youth organization of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and joined the SPD in 1977. Two years later\, Mr. Gabriel joined the ÖTV union\, and membership in IG Metall and Arbeiterwohlfahrt (AWO)\, a social welfare organization\, followed. Trained as a high school educator\, he assumed various responsibilities in adult education and became a member of Lower Saxony’s parliament over the course of the 1980s. During the subsequent decade\, among other positions\, he held the post of chair of the environmental committee of Lower Saxony’s parliament and was a member of the SPD executive committee. He served as prime minister of Lower Saxony from 1999 to 2003\, and he has been a directly elected member of Germany’s Bundestag since 2005\, taking over the post of Federal Minister for the Environmental that same year. He is recognized as an eminent expert on U.S.-European political and economic relations\, in particular in Central and Eastern Europe. He served as the U.S. ambassador to Germany from 1997 to 2001. Before that\, he occupied a number of high-level diplomatic posts\, including U.S. assistant secretary of state for European affairs\, special envoy for the Dayton Peace Process\, U.S. ambassador to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (Helsinki Process)\, deputy U.S. ambassador to NATO\, and U.S. minister and deputy commandant of forces in divided Berlin. From 2001 to 2009\, he was chairman of Lazard Freres Germany. He currently serves as senior counsellor to the international law firm Noerr LLP and as a senior adviser to the worldwide consultancy Accenture. Mr. Kornblum has also served on a number of supervisory and advisory boards including those of Thyssen-Krupp\, Technologies AG\, Bayer AG\, Russell Reynolds\, and Motorola Europe. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Charlotte Warburg Chapter and World Affairs Council of Charlotte will host a discussion and luncheon with Ambassador John Kornblum\, Former U.S. Ambassador to Germany.  \nThere will be a charge of $45.00 for members and $60.00 for nonmembers to attend this event.\nRSVP here no later than Wednesday\, September 11. \nAmbassador John C. Kornblum has a long record of service in the United States and Europe both as a diplomat and as a businessman. He is recognized as an eminent expert on U.S.-European political and economic relations\, in particular in Central and Eastern Europe. He served as the U.S. ambassador to Germany from 1997 to 2001. Before that\, he occupied a number of high-level diplomatic posts\, including U.S. assistant secretary of state for European affairs\, special envoy for the Dayton Peace Process\, U.S. ambassador to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (Helsinki Process)\, deputy U.S. ambassador to NATO\, and U.S. minister and deputy commandant of forces in divided Berlin. From 2001 to 2009\, he was chairman of Lazard Freres Germany. He currently serves as senior counsellor to the international law firm Noerr LLP and as a senior adviser to the worldwide consultancy Accenture. Mr. Kornblum has also served on a number of supervisory and advisory boards including those of Thyssen-Krupp\, Technologies AG\, Bayer AG\, Russell Reynolds\, and Motorola Europe. He is a member of the boards of the American Chamber of Commerce in Germany\, the American Academy in Berlin\, the Deutsche Oper in Berlin\, and of numerous nonprofit organizations on both sides of the Atlantic. He received a B.A. from Michigan State University in 1964\, and he has been the recipient of many awards\, including a Knights Cross of the Order of Merit from Germany and an Order of Merit from Austria.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Prior to coming to Washington\, D.C.\, he led FES offices in Warsaw\, Jerusalem\, and Shanghai. In between\, he also served as the Department Head of the Asia and Pacific Department of the FES in Berlin. Knut has extensive experience in the United States having completed a yearlong high school exchange program in Logan\, West Virginia\, and later working for Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) as a Legislative Fellow\, advising the Senator on foreign affairs. Knut obtained his M.A. in History\, Political Science\, and Economics from the Technical University of Berlin as well as a Master of Science in Foreign Service from Georgetown University. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The St. Louis Warburg Chapter of the American Council on Germany will host a discussion and reception with Dr. Stormy-Annika Mildner\,Head of the Department External Economic Policy at the Federation of German Industry (BDI)\, on “Ties That Bind: Transatlantic Trade and Investment from a German Perspective” \nThere is no charge to attend this event. \nDr. Stormy-Annika Mildner became head of the External Economic Policy department at the Federation of German Industry (BDI) in January 2014. Until December 2013\, she was a member of the Executive Board of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP)\, a policy-oriented think-tank based in Berlin. Her fields of interest include international trade and finance as well as commodity markets. Before joining the SWP\, Dr. Mildner worked for the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP)\, where she headed the “Globalization and the World Economy” program (2000-2002). From 2005 to 2006\, Dr. Mildner was a lecturer at the John F. Kennedy Institute of the Free University of Berlin. In spring 2010\, she was a visiting fellow at the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies in Washington\, where she is still a non-resident Senior Fellow. In fall 2011 she was a visiting fellow at the German Marshall Fund’s Transatlantic Academy in Washington. Dr. Mildner conducted her Bachelor studies in economics and North American studies at the Free University of Berlin and earned a Master of Science in international political economy from the London School of Economics (2000). She wrote her PhD thesis at the Free University of Berlin on the economic and political rationale of export credit finance in the United States. During her PhD studies\, she attended the Yale Center for International and Area Studies (YCIAS) of Yale University (2002-2003).[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
