After studying political science at the University of Hamburg\, Mr. Schlüter joined the German Foreign Office in 1979. His first foreign assignments brought him to Buenos Aires and Algiers. From 1986 to 1990 he served as the spokesman of the German Embassy in Tel Aviv before returning to the Foreign Office in Bonn as desk officer for the Maghreb countries. From 1992 to 1995 he served as Deputy Consul General in Los Angeles before returning to Bonn as Deputy Director for the southern part of Latin America. From 2000 to 2004\, he was posted to the United States a second time and served as Deputy Consul General in New York City before moving to Buenos Aires as Deputy Chief of Mission. In 2007 he returned to the Foreign Office in Berlin to assume the position of Director for Conflict Prevention\, Peace-Building\, Democracy Promotion and State-Building\, promoting German projects in this field world-wide. In 2010 he was appointed Ambassador to the Eastern Caribbean Region\, residing in Port of Spain\, Trinidad and Tobago before moving on to his last assignment as Consul General in San Francisco in 2014. \nMr. Schlüter’s speaking tour is supported by Allianz and the American Council on Germany and is administered under the auspices of the Deutschlandjahr USA 2018/19 – Year of German-American Friendship. Emerson was named Chairman of the American Council on Germany at the Council’s Annual Meeting of the Members on January 17\, 2018. He is Vice Chairman at Capital Group International. Previously\, he was U.S. Ambassador to Germany\, from 2013 to 2017. In 2015\, Ambassador Emerson received the State Department’s Sue M. Cobb Award for Exemplary Diplomatic Service\, an award given annually to one non-career Ambassador. In 2017\, the Secretary of the Navy and the Director of the CIA awarded him their highest civilian honors for his service. Before going to Berlin\, he was the President of Capital Group Private Client Services from 1997 to July 2013. Previously\, he served on President Clinton’s senior staff\, from 1993 to 1997\, as Deputy Director of Presidential Personnel\, and subsequently as Deputy Director of Intergovernmental Affairs. Ambassador Emerson also coordinated the Economic Conference of the Clinton-Gore transition team and led the Administration’s efforts to obtain congressional approval of the GATT Uruguay Round Agreement in 1994\, and the extension of China’s Most-Favored-Nation trading status in 1996. In 2010\, President Obama appointed Ambassador Emerson to serve on the President’s Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations. Earlier in his career\, Ambassador Emerson served as the Los Angeles Chief Deputy City Attorney (1987-1993). In 1988\, he traveled to Germany on an ACG Political Exchange Fellowship\, carried out in collaboration with the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung. Even as a teenager he was involved in opposition groups under the protection of the Catholic Church and became politically active early on. The Peaceful Revolution of 1989\, driven by the peace and civil rights movement\, had a lasting impact on his life. \nAfter studying political science and communications\, he worked for many years as Managing Director of a communications agency. In 2004 he moved to the Saxon State Parliament as Advisor to the Vice-President. Since 2008\, he has been the closest strategic advisor to the Mayor of the City of Leipzig. Mr. David was a participant in the ACG’s McCloy Leadership Mission on Urban Affairs and Sustainability in 2016. The Peaceful Revolution of 1989 — which ultimately led to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany — began in Leipzig. After studying photography\, she began her career in 1989 at Radio Schleswig-Holstein in Kiel\, where she worked as a reporter and moderator. Since 1990\, she has hosted regular shows on radio stations in Berlin\, Bremen\, and Hamburg and produced pieces for Deutschlandfunk. Since 2014\, she has hosted a show on Nordwestradio. \nIn addition\, Anja Goerz writes fiction and non-fiction. She has written several novels\, and in April 2014 the Deutschen Taschenbuch Verlag published “Der Osten ist ein Gefühl” (The East is a Feeling)\, in which she reports on conversations she has had with people from the former GDR. Since 2014\, she has hosted a show on Nordwestradio. \nIn addition\, Anja Goerz writes fiction and non-fiction. She has written several novels\, and in April 2014 the Deutschen Taschenbuch Verlag published “Der Osten ist ein Gefühl” (The East is a Feeling)\, in which she reports on conversations she has had with people from the former GDR. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Boston Warburg Chapter will host a discussion with Tobias David\, Chief of Staff to the Lord Mayor of Leipzig on “Remembering the Fall of the Berlin Wall: From German Unity to a New Beginning.” \nTobias David\, born in 1973\, grew up in Leipzig (former GDR/East Germany) and spent most of his school years under the conditions of the GDR dictatorship. Even as a teenager he was involved in opposition groups under the protection of the Catholic Church and became politically active early on. The Peaceful Revolution of 1989\, driven by the peace and civil rights movement\, had a lasting impact on his life. After studying political science and communication\, he worked for many years as managing director of a communications agency. In 2004 he moved to the Saxon State Parliament as advisor to the Vice-President. Since 2008\, he has been the closest strategic advisor to the Mayor of the City of Leipzig. The Peaceful Revolution of 1989 – which ultimately led to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany – began in Leipzig. Today Leipzig is not only one of the largest cities in Germany but also the fastest growing German city. \nThis event is being held under the auspices of Deutschlandjahr USA 2018/2019 – the Year of German-American Friendship\, a comprehensive and collaborative initiative funded by the German Federal Foreign Office\, implemented by the Goethe-Institut\, and with support from the Federation of German Industries (BDI). He came to this role after more than 20 years with the Heinrich Böll Stiftung\, the political foundation associated with the Greens. At the center of his work were green economics and ecological innovation\, migration\, the future of Europe and international politics. Before that he was co-chair of the Greens (1989/90) and Senator for Environment and City Development in Bremen. \nMr. Fücks is considered a leading thinker\, seeking cross-party discourse. He has published in leading newspapers\, gives speeches\, and participates in the public debate. Mr. Fücks is an advocate for liberal ecology politics\, which focus on innovation rather than prohibition. Of special importance to him is a dialogue with the economy\, which he considers an invaluable actor of a “green industrial revolution.” \nRalf Fücks is coordinator of the committee “Ecological Modernization” within the Petersburg Dialogue. Like Marieluise Beck he fights for democratic opposition in Russia\, Ukraine\, and other Eastern European countries. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Nashville Warburg Chapter and the Sister Cities of Nashville will host a discussion and reception with David Gill\, German Consul General in New York on “The Path to Freedom and German Unity: The Peaceful Revolution and the Fall of the Berlin Wall 30 Years On.” \nDavid Gill was born in 1966 in Herrnhut\, Saxony\, in former East Germany. He was denied a higher education by the Communist regime for political reasons. Instead\, he trained and worked as a plumber before joining a preparatory protestant school and later the theological seminary of the Protestant Church in Berlin-Brandenburg. In 1990\, he was the chairman of Normannenstrasse Citizens’ Committee which initially oversaw the dissolution of the Ministry of State Security at the Stasi headquarters and then served as the secretary of the Special Committee for the dissolution of the Stasi of the East German Parliament. \nAfter Germany’s unification\, Mr. Gill became spokesman and head of the research division of the Federal Commissioner for the Stasi-Files before studying law in Berlin and Philadelphia. After holding positions in the Federal Ministry of the Interior and at the Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information in Berlin\, he served as the Deputy Representative of the Council of the Protestant Church in Germany to the Federal Republic of Germany and the European Union. During Federal President Joachim Gauck’s term from 2012-2017\, he was state secretary and chief of staff to the President. Since August 2017\, he has been the German Consul General in New York. \nOn Mr. Gill’s first visit to the United States in 1992\, Mr. Gill participated in the American Council on Germany’s American-German Young Leaders Conference in Nashville.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

She conducts research and development projects with international partners in the areas of human-computer interaction\, wearable computing\, as well as user-centered design and participation. Dr. Joost is Germany’s Digital Champion on the European Commission’s Digital Agenda initiative. She advises the Commission on implementing the Digital Agenda for Europe\, focusing on digital skills\, the digitalization of work\, and support for startups. \nUp until 2010\, she was a junior professor for Interaction Design & Media at the Technical University of Berlin in cooperation with Telekom Innovation Laboratories. As a visiting professor\, she taught Gender and Design at the HAWK Hildesheim. In 2009\, she received the Young Talent Award for Science from the Mayor of Berlin. She is the Chairwoman of DGTF e.V. (German Society for Design Theory and Research) and a Board member of the Technologiestiftung Berlin. Before being appointed to his current posiiton in \n2019\, he spent 10 years as a member of the Bavarian State Parliament. During this time\, he served as Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee for Higher Education\, Research\, and Culture. In addition\, he chaired the working group Active Civil Society / Voluntary Work of the CSU Parliamentary Group. Mr. Jörg had a lasting influence on the Bavarian science and research landscape\, particularly in decentralizing higher education and strengthening the cooperation between universities of applied sciences and the private sector. While in Parliament\, he was particularly focused on the social development of Bavaria regarding its civil society\, culture and the preservation of monuments. \nMr. Jörg studied law at the Universities of Passau\, Würzburg\, and Linz (Austria). DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Dallas Warburg Chapter will host a Breakfast Briefing with Dr. Johannes Beermann\, Member of the Executive Board of the Deutsche Bundesbank.  \nThis event is invitation only. \nDr. Johannes Beermann has been a Member of the Executive Board of the German Bundesbank currently responsible for cash management\, administration\, construction management\, controlling\, accounting and organisation\, and the procurement center since January 2015. Prior to that\, from September 2009 to November 2014\, he was Minister of the State and Chief of the State Chancellery of the Free State of Saxony. From June 2008 to September 2009\, he was Chief of the State Chancellery and Minister of State for Federal and European Affairs of the Free State of Saxony. Dr. Beermann served as Secretary of State for Federal and European Affairs at the Hessian State Chancellery and Commissioner (Bevollmächtigter) of the State of Hesse to the Federation from 1999 to 2003 and as State Councillor to the Senator of Finance of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen from 1995 to 1999. Before that\, he held miscellaneous functions in the public sector. He holds a Ph.D. in Law from the University of Münster and has spent time as an associate partner of a law firm and a practicing lawyer when not in the public sector\, especially between 2003 and 2008.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Emerson\, Chairman of the American Council on Germany.  \nThe world appears to be at another major turning point. Tensions between the United States and China threaten a resumption of great power conflict. Global institutions are being tested as never before\, and hard-edged nationalism has resurfaced as a major force in both democracies and authoritarian states. From the European perspective\, the United States appears to be abdicating its global leadership role. Meanwhile\, Moscow and Beijing eagerly exploit every opportunity to pit European partners against one another. \nBut a pivot point also offers the continent an opportunity to grow stronger. Join LAWACTH and the American Council on Germany on November 9th for a discussion with Wolfgang Ischinger\, Germany’s most prominent diplomat\, in conversation with former US Ambassador to Germany John Emerson. Emerson (moderator) was named Chairman of the American Council on Germany on January 17\, 2018. He is Vice Chairman at Capital Group International. Previously\, he served as United States Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany from August\, 2013 until January 20\, 2017. He served at a particularly challenging time\, and in 2015 Ambassador Emerson was awarded the State Department’s prestigious Sue M. Cobb Award for Exemplary Diplomatic Service\, which is given annually to one non-career Ambassador.  He also served on President Obama’s Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

She is currently a Senior Fellow in the Center on the United States and Europe at Brookings. She was the Kissinger Chair on Foreign Policy and International Relations at the Library of Congress from October 2019 through March 2020. She served as the inaugural Robert Bosch Senior Fellow from 2014 to 2019. \nPrior to working at Brookings\, she was a senior transatlantic fellow with the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF)\, where she directed the influential Transatlantic Trends survey program. Her areas of expertise include: transatlantic relations; German foreign policy; NATO; the European Union’s foreign\, security\, and defense policy; international law; and human rights. \nDr. Stelzenmüller is the former director of GMF’s Berlin office. From 1994 to 2005\, she was an editor for the political section of the German weekly DIE ZEIT\, where she had also served as defense and international security editor and covered human rights issues and \nHer essays and articles\, in both German and English\, have appeared in a wide range of publications\, including Foreign Affairs\, Internationale Politik\, the Financial Times\, the International New York Times\, and Süddeutsche Zeitung. Her dissertation\, “Direkte Demokratie in den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika\,” was published in 1994 by Nomos. She is also a frequent commentator on American and European radio and television\, including Presseclub (ARD)\, National Public Radio\, and the BBC. Dr. Stelzenmüller is a governor of the Ditchley Foundation and a fellow of the Royal Swedish Society for War Sciences. \nShe has worked in Germany and the United States\, and speaks English\, French\, German\, and Spanish. Dr. Stelzenmüller holds a doctorate in law from the University of Bonn (1992)\, a master’s degree in public administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University (1988)\, and a law degree from the University of Bonn (1985) in humanitarian crises. From 1988 to 1989\, she was a visiting researcher at Harvard Law School. She has also been a GMF campus fellow at Grinnell College in Iowa\, a Woodrow Wilson Center public policy scholar in Washington\, D.C.\, and a member of the Remarque Forum—a conference series of the Remarque Institute at New York University.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Valet Parking available at $15[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Lieutenant General (Retired) Ben Hodges holds the Pershing Chair in Strategic Studies at the Center for European Policy Analysis. He joined CEPA in February 2018. \nA native of Quincy\, Florida\, General Hodges graduated from the United States Military Academy in May 1980 and was commissioned in the Infantry. After his first assignment as an Infantry Lieutenant in Garlstedt\, Germany\, he commanded Infantry units at the Company\, Battalion\, and Brigade levels in the 101st Airborne Division\, including Command of the First Brigade Combat Team “Bastogne” of the 101st Airborne Division in Operation IRAQI FREEDOM (2003-2004). His other operational assignments include Chief of Operations for Multi-National Corps-Iraq in Operation IRAQI FREEDOM (2005-2006) and Director of Operations\, Regional Command South in Kandahar\, Afghanistan (2009-2010). \nGeneral Hodges has also served in a variety of Joint and Army Staff positions to include Tactics Instructor; Chief of Plans\, 2nd Infantry Division in Korea; Aide-de-Camp to the Supreme Allied Commander Europe; Chief of Staff\, XVIII Airborne Corps; Director of the Pakistan Afghanistan Coordination Cell on the Joint Staff; Chief of Legislative Liaison for the United States Army; and Commander\, NATO Allied Land Command (İzmir\, Turkey). His last military assignment was as Commanding General\, United States Army Europe (Wiesbaden\, Germany) from 2014 to 2017. He retired from the U.S. Army in January 2018. \nStefan Schneider has been Consul General in Los Angeles since September 2018. He started his diplomatic career in 1987 and his many assignments have taken him all over the world. He served as Head of the Legal and Consular Section in Thailand\, Head of the Trade and Commerce Section in Bulgaria\, Deputy Consul  General in Miami\, Counsellor for Political Affairs in Paris and Consul  General in Izmir.  Before being posted to Los Angeles\, he served as Head of the Cultural Affairs Department at the German Embassy in Rome. At the German Foreign Office\, he was assigned to the Middle East desk\, the Disarmament and Arms Control desk\, the German as a Foreign Language division\, and he served as Head of International Academic Exchange\, also responsible for the Fulbright Program. Mr. Schneider studied law in Munich and Cologne. He also earned a degree in French literature from the Sorbonne University in Paris.  He speaks English\, French\, Italian\, Spanish and Bulgarian.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Voters who have never known a Chancellor other than Angela Merkel voted for the first time. Change and continuity are both on the agenda and four political factions – the Social Democrats\, Christian Democrats\, Greens\, and Free Democrats – are jockeying to form a new government and with it the chance to set German foreign and domestic priorities for a generation to come. Who will win out and where will the next governing coalition lead Germany? \n\nJoin the German Society of Pennsylvania and the American Council on Germany’s Philadelphia Warburg Chapter for an in-person conversation with German journalist and author\, Martin Klingst\, on German politics after Merkel. \n\nThe event will take place Thursday\, October 14th at 7:00 pm at the German Society’s historic home at 611 Spring Garden Street in Philadelphia. He has been a member of the German Bundestag since 2009 and a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) since 1996. Mr. Beyer is also a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs\, where he serves as Special Rapporteur on Transatlantic Relations. He is Executive Vice President of the Southeast Europe Association. Prior to his current roles\, he served as Managing Chairman of the Heiligenhaus town branch of the CDU and a member of the Heiligenhaus town council from 2008 to 2009. In addition\, he was an elected member of the Executive Committee of the Mettmann county branch of the CDU. Before joining the public sector\, he worked as an attorney specializing in industrial property law in the Cologne office of Mayer Brown LLP\, the Los Angeles office of Murchison & Cumming LLP\, and the Chicago office of Brinks\, Hofer\, Gilson & Lione LLP. Mr. Beyer completed his undergraduate studies at the Universities of Düsseldorf and Bonn\, and received his Master in Law at the University of Virginia School of Law in Charlottesville.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
