RSVP here by August 8.\nDress Code: Business attire. Valet parking is available to $12 per car. \nAmbassador Emily M. Haber became the German Ambassador to the United States in June 2018. A career diplomat\, she was previously deployed to the Federal Ministry of the Interior\, where she served as State Secretary overseeing security and migration at the height of the refugee crisis in Europe. In 2009\, Ambassador Haber was appointed Political Director and\, in 2011\, State Secretary at the Foreign Office\, the first woman to hold either post. Earlier in her career\, she served at the German Embassy in Ankara. In Berlin\, she has served as Deputy Head of the Cabinet and Parliamentary Liaison Division\, as Director of the OSCE Division\, and as Deputy Director-General for the Western Balkans. She has extensive knowledge of the Soviet Union and Russia\, having worked both in the Soviet Union Division at the German Foreign Office and on various occasions at the German Embassy in Moscow\, where she served as Head of the Economic Affairs Section and Head of the Political Affairs Department. \nAmbassador Haber attended schools in New Delhi\, Bonn\, Paris\, Brussels\, Washington\, Bonn\, and Athens. From 1975 to 1980\, she studied history and ethnology in Cologne\, earning her Ph.D. with a dissertation on German foreign policy during the Morocco crisis on the eve of World War I. \n\nAmbassador John B. Emerson was named Chairman of the American Council on Germany on January 17\, 2018. He is Vice Chairman at Capital Group International. Previously\, he was U.S. Ambassador to Germany\, from 2013 to 2017. Serving at a particularly challenging time\, in 2015 Ambassador Emerson was awarded the State Department’s prestigious Sue M. Cobb Award for Exemplary Diplomatic Service. Before going to Berlin\, he was the President of Capital Group Private Client Services from 1997 to July 2013. Previously\, he served on President Clinton’s senior staff\, from 1993 to 1997\, as Deputy Director of Presidential Personnel\, and subsequently as Deputy Director of Intergovernmental Affairs. Ambassador Emerson also coordinated the Economic Conference of the Clinton-Gore transition team and led the Administration’s efforts to obtain congressional approval of the GATT Uruguay Round Agreement in 1994\, and the extension of China’s Most-Favored-Nation trading status in 1996. In 2010\, President Obama appointed Ambassador Emerson to serve on the President’s Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations. Earlier in his career\, Ambassador Emerson served as the Los Angeles Chief Deputy City Attorney (1987-1993). He serves as parliamentary Special Rapporteur on Transatlantic Relations in the Committee on Foreign Affairs. He is an active member of Atlantik-Brücke\, the Aspen Institute and United Europe in addition to numerous organizations in his district. After studying political science at the University of Hamburg\, Schlüter went to Israel as a 23-year-old in 1975 and lived on Kibbutz Ramat Rachel near Jerusalem. He joined the German Foreign Office in 1979\, and was sent to Buenos Aires\, where he met his wife\, and then Algiers before moving to Tel Aviv as spokesman for the German Embassy. While in Tel Aviv from 1986 to 1990\, his daughter was born. During diplomatic postings in Los Angeles (where is his son attended a synagogue preschool)\, New York as Deputy Consul General\, and San Francisco as Consul General\, Mr. Schlüter engaged in dialogue with Jewish organizations and at synagogues about Germany’s relationship with the Jewish people and organized several trips to Germany for rabbis. Since the summer of 2017\, he is a retired member of the German Foreign Office and currently serves as a Program Director at the Diplomatic Academy in Berlin. \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Tour: Stefan Schlüter is undertaking a two-week speaking tour of 11 cities in the southeastern and midwestern regions of the United States. The goal of this project is to engage communities in smaller U.S. cities to examine German-Jewish themes\, to openly discuss Germany today in the context of its history\, and to provide opportunities to learn about contemporary Germany. Thematically\, a number of topics will be covered during the speaking tour: Jewish life in Germany\, Germany’s coming to terms with its past\, German-Israeli relations\, rising anti-Semitism and populism in Europe. Since August 2001\, Dr. Hüther has also been an Honorary Professor at the European Business School in Oestrich-Winkel. In the academic year 2016-17\, he was Gerda Henkel Adjunct Professor in the Department of German Studies at Stanford University. In 1999\, he joined DekaBank as Chief Economist and\, starting in 2001\, additionally served as Division Manager of economics and communication. In 1995\, he was appointed Secretary General of the German Council of Economic Advisers. Upon completion of his Doctorate in Economics\, in 1991\, Dr. Hüther became a member of the research staff of the Council of Experts for the Evaluation of Macroeconomic Development. From 1982 to 1987\, he studied economics as well as medieval and modern history at the Justus-Liebig University in Gießen. Dr. Hüther and his team carry out research on pressing issues including the eurozone’s future governance design\, digitalization\, German Ordnungspolitik\, the past economic crisis\, and capital market supervision. He is a member of the Board of Atlantik-Brücke. He was awarded the German Federal Cross of Merit (Bundesverdienstkreuz).[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The goal of this project is to engage communities in smaller U.S. cities to examine German-Jewish themes\, to openly discuss Germany today in the context of its history\, and to provide opportunities to learn about contemporary Germany. Thematically\, a number of topics will be covered during the speaking tour: Jewish life in Germany\, Germany’s coming to terms with its past\, German-Israeli relations\, rising anti-Semitism and populism in Europe. The outcome of this process will be of crucial importance for the future of the EU and the transatlantic partnership. From 2003-2005\, she handled the Europe portfolio on the State Department’s Policy Planning Staff. She returned to GMF from 2005 to 2010\, first as senior director of policy programs and then as executive vice president. RSVP here by November 12. \nJan Techau is a senior fellow and director of the Europe Program at The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF). As a foreign policy analyst\, his research focuses on European integration and the EU’s role in the world\, German foreign policy\, transatlantic relations\, and security and defense issues. Techau is co-author of Führungsmacht Deutschland – Strategie ohne Angst und Anmaßung (2017) and a regular contributor to German and international news media. Before joining GMF\, Techau was the director of the Richard C. Holbrooke Forum for the Study of Diplomacy and Governance at the American Academy in Berlin. From March 2011 to August 2016\, Techau was the director of Carnegie Europe in Brussels. Techau also served in the NATO Defense College’s Research Division in Rome from February 2010 until February 2011. He was director of the Alfred von Oppenheim Center for European Policy Studies at the German Council on Foreign Relations in Berlin between 2006 and 2010\, and from 2001 to 2006 he served at the German Ministry of Defense’s Press and Information Department. Techau holds an MA in political science from the Christian-Albrechts-Universität in Kiel\, Germany. He is an associate scholar at the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA) and an associate fellow at the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies (AICGS) in Washington\, DC.
