His academic degrees include\, in Germany\, an M.A. in Political Science from the Freie Universität in Berlin and\, in the United States\, an M.A. degree in International Relations\, a Certificate in Russian Studies\, and a Ph.D. with distinction\, all from Columbia University in New York City. In the past\, he also held teaching and/or research positions at institutions in se­veral countries\, including the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London\, the Royal Military College of Canada\, and the Rand Corporation in Santa Monica\, California. Born and raised in the Federal Republic of Germany\, Mr. Ramelow moved to Thuringia after unification in 1990 and has since been a politically active resident. He acted as a trade union official (1990-1999)\, when he was Chairman of Handel\, Banken und Versicherungen (HBV)\, then a member of the Thuringian Parliament (1999-2005)\, and leader of The Left in Thuringia (2009-2014). She has also reported on terrorism for The New York Times\, The International Herald Tribune\, and NPR\, and she is the co-author of The Eternal Nazi\, Children of Jihad\, and Islam. She was one of two reporters who broke the story of Khaled el Masri’s rendition case and worked on a series called “Inside the Jihad\,” where she and her colleagues interviewed members of radical jihadist organizations all over the world. Ms. Mekhennet was a 2012 Nieman Fellow at Harvard University\, and she has been a visiting fellow at the Weatherhead Center for International Policy at Harvard\, the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS)\, and the Geneva Center for Security Policy. In 1985 and 1986\, he was a Kennedy Fellow at Harvard University\, and in 2008 and 2009\, he was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton. In 2010 and 2011\, he served as the Theodor Heuss Professor at the New School for Social Research in New York City. She then worked as a Manager of Project Engineering in the Customer Service group\, where she managed large-scale automation projects.
