SUMMARY:After the Dust Settles: Understanding the Results of Germany’s Recent State Elections
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Germany’s recent state elections have revealed important shifts in the country’s political landscape\, with implications that extend well beyond regional politics\, delivering strong results for both the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) and Die Linke while challenging Germany’s traditional governing parties. The outcomes have raised pressing questions about voter dissatisfaction\, economic insecurity\, migration\, democratic resilience\, and the future of coalition-building\, particularly in eastern Germany. As party leaders and policymakers assess the results\, these elections offer a window into the changing priorities of German voters\, the broader forces reshaping the country’s political landscape\, and the potential impact for the current federal government coalition. \nJoin us on October 26 at 11:00 am ET for a virtual discussion with Prof. Dr. Thorsten Faas\, Professor at Otto-Suhr-Institute of Political Science of the Freie Universität Berlin and Hannah Arendt Visiting Chair for German and European Studies at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the University of Toronto\, as we assess what the elections in Saxony-Anhalt\, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern\, and Berlin mean for Germany.[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Register Here” style=”classic” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fus02web.zoom.us%2Fwebinar%2Fregister%2F2817921665205%2FWN_RX2XwbCoQGiL3Cu2DlFZDg” css=”.vc_custom_1792166570328{background-color: #1e73be !important;background-position: center !important;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;background-size: cover !important;}”][vc_column_text]Professor Dr. Thorsten Faas is one of Germany’s most renowned election researchers. He holds the Hannah Arendt Visiting Chair for German and European Studies\, which is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). His research focuses on electoral politics and campaign communications\, particularly as they relate to young people and German elections. Faas is one of the principal investigators of the German Longitudinal Election Study (GLES) and a member of the Planning Committee for Module 7 of the Comparative Study of Electoral Systems (CSES). \nAfter studying political science in Bamberg and at the London School of Economics\, he received his doctorate from the University of Duisburg-Essen in 2008.
