DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]This past weekend marked a major step in Germany’s commitment to supporting Kyiv in its battle against the Russian invasion. On Saturday\, Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced an arms package to provide more tanks\, armored vehicles\, and air defense systems to Ukraine\, totaling 2.7 billion euros – or nearly $3 billion. The announcement came just before talks between Chancellor Scholz and President Volodymir Zelinsky – and is seen as an attempt to “reset” the relationship between the two countries after Germany’s hesitancy to provide weapons. On Sunday\, President Zelinsky was presented the prestigious Charlemagne Prize in the City of Aachen. Before joining the newspaper’s editorial staff in 1986\, Mr. Frankenberger gained deep insight into the U.S. political decision-making process when he worked as an assistant to a U.S. member of Congress. He was a Bosch Fellow at the Transatlantic Academy in Washington\, DC\, in 2011 and a Marshall Fellow at Harvard University in 1990. He serves on the Board of various institutions dealing with foreign and defense policy issues. Mr. Frankenberger earned a Master’s Degree in Political Science\, Economics\, and American Studies from Frankfurt University.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Based in Frankfurt\, he is currently a Senior Advisor to Human Rights First and a NATO Senior Mentor for Logistics. General Hodges has also served in a variety of Joint and Army Staff positions\, including Tactics Instructor; Chief of Plans\, 2nd Infantry Division\, in Korea; Aide-de-Camp to the Supreme Allied Commander Europe; Chief of Staff\, XVIII Airborne Corps; Director of the Pakistan-Afghanistan Coordination Cell on the Joint Staff; Chief of Legislative Liaison for the United States Army; and Commander of NATO Allied Land Command (İzmir\, Turkey). After his first assignment as an Infantry Lieutenant in Garlstedt\, Germany\, he commanded Infantry units at the Company\, Battalion\, and Brigade levels in the 101st Airborne Division\, including Command of the First Brigade Combat Team “Bastogne” of the 101st Airborne Division in Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003-2004). His other operational assignments include Chief of Operations for Multi-National Corps – Iraq in Operation Iraqi Freedom (2005-2006) and Director of Operations\, Regional Command South\, in Kandahar\, Afghanistan (2009-2010). General Hodges is co-author of the book Future War and the Defence of Europe\, published by Oxford University Press. \nAmbassador John B. Emerson was named Chairman of the American Council on Germany at the Council’s Annual Meeting of the Members on January 17\, 2018. He is Vice Chairman at Capital Group International. Previously\, he was U.S. Ambassador to Germany\, from 2013 to 2017. In 2015\, Ambassador Emerson received the State Department’s Sue M. Cobb Award for Exemplary Diplomatic Service\, an award given annually to one non-career Ambassador. In 2017\, the Secretary of the Navy and the Director of the CIA awarded him their highest civilian honors for his service. \nBefore going to Berlin\, he was the President of Capital Group Private Client Services from 1997 to July 2013. Previously\, he served on President Clinton’s senior staff\, from 1993 to 1997\, as Deputy Director of Presidential Personnel\, and subsequently as Deputy Director of Intergovernmental Affairs. Ambassador Emerson also coordinated the Economic Conference of the Clinton-Gore transition team and led the Administration’s efforts to obtain congressional approval of the GATT Uruguay Round Agreement in 1994\, and the extension of China’s Most-Favored-Nation trading status in 1996. In 2010\, President Obama appointed Ambassador Emerson to serve on the President’s Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations. Earlier in his career\, Ambassador Emerson served as the Los Angeles Chief Deputy City Attorney\, from 1987 to 1993. In 1988\, he traveled to Germany on an ACG Political Exchange Fellowship\, carried out in collaboration with the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung.
