RSVP (acceptances only) to the American Council on Germany at 212-826-3636 or events@acgusa.org. \nDr. Christoph von Marschall is Chief Diplomatic Correspondent of the Berlin daily Der Tagesspiegel. As the inaugural Helmut Schmidt Fellow of the German Marshall Fund of the United States and the ZEIT Foundation\, he researched and wrote his most recent book\, Wir Verstehen die Welt Nicht Mehr: Deutschlands Entfremdung von Seinen Freunden\, which was published last month. From 2005 to 2013\, he was Der Tagesspiegel’s U.S. Correspondent\, Washington Bureau Chief\, and White House Correspondent. Beginning when Barack Obama took office in 2009\, Dr. von Marschall was the only German newspaper correspondent in the White House Press Corps. From 1995 to 2005\, he served as the Editor of the Editorial Page. In addition to his role at Der Tagesspiegel\, Dr. von Marschall is a regular guest at ARD-Presseclub and a commentator at Deutschlandfunk and WDR\, and he writes for Zeit Online\, Cicero\, and Das Parlament. Dr. von Marschall is the Vice-Chairman of the Berlin Presse Club e.V. and the author of many books. He studied East European history and political science in Freiburg\, Mainz\, and Krakow and received his Ph.D. from Freiburg University in 1988.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Pittsburgh: Amicable Divorce? The European Union\, the United Kingdom\, and the United States after Brexit
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Pittsburgh Warburg Chapter will host a discussion and luncheon with Dr. Céline-Agathe Caro\, Senior Policy Analyst at the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung.  \nThere will be a no charge to attend this event. RSVP here by October 30. \nDr. Céline-Agathe Caro is a Senior Policy Analyst at the Washington office of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS)\, a German political foundation affiliated with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). In its role as a think-tank and advisory body\, the KAS is responsible for drafting timely academic analysis and making policy recommendations for German political leaders. Dr. Caro is in charge of monitoring U.S. think tanks and universities with a special emphasis on U.S. foreign and transatlantic policy\, U.S. positions on key international issues and the American perceptions of current developments in the EU. Between 2010 and 2015 Dr. Caro was the Coordinator for European Policy in the headquarters of the KAS in Berlin. In this context\, Dr. Caro coordinated publications and organized conferences on current issues regarding the future of the European integration and Germany’s EU policy. In addition\, in the Spring and Fall of 2013 she was a visiting lecturer at the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle in Paris and at the Ecole Normale Supérieure (ENS) in Lyon\, a French grande école. Dr. Caro began her career in the KAS as a research fellow in its Paris office from 2007 to 2010\, focusing on expanding Franco-German institutional relations. Prior to that she was an Assistant Professor at the University of Dresden where she taught French Studies and French-German history (2002-2007). Dr. Caro’s analyses and policy papers appear frequently in KAS periodicals and in different German and French journals. Since 2010 she is a frequent participant in seminars and panel discussions at think tanks\, governmental institutions and universities. She is also a frequent commentator on European issues for German\, French and international media. Dr. Caro attended the Université Sorbonne-Nouvelle in Paris\, where she obtained a master’s degree in German Studies as well as a joint Ph.D. in German and French Studies in cooperation with the University of Dresden. Her doctoral research examined the development of environmental awareness and the emergence of green movements in France and Germany. \nAbstract: The United Kingdom is scheduled to leave the European Union in March 2019. Yet\, both sides are still working on a withdrawal agreement as well as a framework for their future relationship. Border and trade issues are among the biggest points of contention. The lack of consensus in the U.K. regarding the best Brexit strategy further complicates tense negotiations between London and the 27 other EU member states. The outcome of this process will be of crucial importance for the future of the EU and the transatlantic partnership. With its political and economic weight\, Germany remains a key player in the current discussions among Western allies. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
