SUMMARY:NYC: After the German Federal Election: Analyzing the Results and Looking Ahead
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The American Council on Germany\, in partnership with Deutsches Haus at NYU\, NYU’s Center for European and Mediterranean Studies\, the CUNY European Union Studies Center\, and the CUNY Ralph Bunche Institute for International Studies\, will hold a Panel Discussion with: \nDr. Sheri Berman\nProfessor of Political Science\nBarnard College and Columbia University \nThomas Jahn\nNew York Correspondent\nHandelsblatt \nDr. Christian Martin\nProfessor of European and Mediterranean Studies\nMax Weber Visiting Chair in German and European Studies\nNew York University \nand \nDr. Steven E. Sokol\nPresident\nAmerican Council on Germany\n(Moderator) \n  \nRSVP (acceptances only) to the American Council on Germany\nat 212-826-3636 or events@acgusa.org. \n  \nOn September 24\, Germany is heading to the polls to elect a new Bundestag\, and to decide who will govern the country for the next four years. Can Angela Merkel continue her chancellorship and her trademark governance with a steady hand? What would follow for the stability of Europe and German-American relations if Merkel were not to be re-elected? Is there an option for a center-left majority that would include the former communist state party Die Linke (Left Party)? What will be the electoral fate of the far-right Alternative für Deutschland and its nativist agenda? Will its support dwindle as those of other authoritarian populist parties have\, or will they see an unexpected upswing? On the night after the election\, this panel discussion will bring together distinguished experts on German politics to conduct an analysis of the election results and to discuss the direction the country is likely to take under a new government. Special attention will be given to election results from eastern Germany and the specific role the electorate there plays in shaping the composition of the 19th German Bundestag.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
